Google reportedly cut hundreds of jobs on April 10, 2025, in its Platforms & Devices organization, which includes work on Android, Pixel, Chrome, ChromeOS, Google Photos, Google One, Fitbit and Nest. The Information reported the figure; Google confirmed only that it made “some job reductions” after an earlier voluntary-exit program and did not disclose an exact total.
This is a report about the April 2025 layoffs—not a newly verified August 2026 event. The available evidence shows workforce reshaping inside a reorganized unit, not an announced withdrawal from Android, Chrome or Pixel.
What Google actually cut
The reported reductions occurred in Google’s Platforms & Devices organization. The unit was created in April 2024 by combining major hardware and software groups under Rick Osterloh. Its portfolio includes Android, Pixel hardware, Chrome, ChromeOS, Google Photos, Google One, Fitbit, Nest, Android Auto, Android TV, Wear OS and Android XR.

The Information reported that hundreds of employees were dismissed. IT Pro’s contemporaneous account placed the cuts on April 10, with coverage published April 11–12. Google did not publish a numerical count.
How the layoffs fit the broader sequence

The January offer was a voluntary buyout, not a firing. TechCrunch reported that it covered employees across the combined Android, Chrome and Pixel organization. The April action was reported as involuntary job cuts. They were related steps in a restructuring, but they should not be described as one single layoff event.

The Information previously reported that the combined group had more than 20,000 employees before the buyout offer. That is an attributed pre-buyout estimate, not a current official headcount, and it cannot support a precise percentage calculation when the number of layoffs remains undisclosed.

Google said the combined organization was working to become more nimble and operate more effectively. In its statement about the April cuts, the company acknowledged “some job reductions” in addition to the voluntary-exit program and said it continued hiring in the United States and elsewhere for important projects. - Reported, not officially quantified: The number affected was “hundreds.”
- Not disclosed: Exact headcount, locations, job functions, contractor impact and team-by-team allocation.
- Not announced: Cancellation of Android, Chrome or Pixel, or a specific outage, update delay or support reduction caused by the cuts.
Why Google combined these teams
Google’s April 2024 announcement said the reorganization would simplify decision-making and improve coordination among hardware, software and artificial intelligence work. The company presented Android, Chrome, Search, Photos and devices as parts of a more integrated computing strategy, with AI-enabled experiences at the center.
Organizational consolidation, cost reduction and product investment can happen at the same time. A larger reporting structure may be followed by role eliminations while the company continues funding strategic products. The evidence supports that combination; it does not prove that AI directly replaced a specific number of laid-off workers.

Does this put Android, Chrome or Pixel at risk?
There is no evidence in the available reporting that Google planned to abandon any of the three product areas. Google continued to publish product and corporate updates, including Pixel announcements, Android and Gemini features, and Chrome AI capabilities:

Those announcements show ongoing investment, not that staffing changes had no effect. The public record does not quantify any impact on roadmaps, morale, support or release schedules.

What remains unknown
Readers should be cautious about headlines that imply more certainty than the sources provide. The following details were not publicly established in the reporting reviewed:
- The exact number of positions eliminated.
- The number assigned to Android engineering, Chrome, Pixel hardware or any other product.
- The geographic distribution of the cuts.
- Whether contractors were included.
- Which roles were eliminated, transferred or later backfilled.
- Whether any specific project was canceled or delayed.
A separate report said approximately 10% of the Privacy Sandbox division was affected by cuts, but that detail should not be generalized to Android, Chrome or Pixel overall. Likewise, the sources do not establish that poor Pixel sales caused the layoffs, or that AI alone caused them.
What this means for users and investors
For users, the layoffs do not by themselves predict a Chrome outage, an Android update delay or a Pixel cancellation. Any such effect would need separate, product-specific evidence. For investors and industry observers, the clearer signal is continued workforce prioritization: Google is combining related teams, reducing some roles and directing resources toward efficiency and AI-enabled products while still hiring for selected work.
Large companies can cut jobs in one organization while hiring for different skills, locations or priorities. Google’s statement that it continued hiring is therefore not inherently inconsistent with the Platforms & Devices reductions.
Bottom line
Google reportedly laid off hundreds of employees in April 2025 after offering buyouts to U.S.-based Platforms & Devices staff in January. Google confirmed reductions but not the “hundreds” figure or a product-level breakdown. The event is best understood as continued workforce rationalization inside a 2024 reorganization—not evidence that Google is abandoning Android, Chrome or Pixel.
