KnowBe4 appointed Joel Kemmerer chief information officer on August 25, 2025, bringing in the former N-able CIO to help lead digital transformation, improve operations and support acquisition integration. The hire came as the cybersecurity company broadened its business from security-awareness training toward a wider human-risk-management platform.
What KnowBe4 announced
KnowBe4 announced Kemmerer’s appointment on August 25, 2025; ChannelPro/ITPro reported it the following day. He was an external hire, not an internal promotion. The company said his remit includes leading critical digital-transformation initiatives, supporting acquisition integration, improving operational performance and helping deliver more value to customers. CEO Bryan Palma highlighted Kemmerer’s experience translating complex technology environments into usable systems and processes.
In the announcement, Kemmerer said he would focus on rethinking how KnowBe4 delivers customer value, embedding operational excellence, enabling teams to transform and innovate, and advancing the company’s strategic vision. KnowBe4 did not disclose a detailed project roadmap, reporting line, compensation details or specific transformation milestones.

Kemmerer’s background
KnowBe4 says Kemmerer has more than 30 years of IT leadership experience. He previously served as CIO of N-able and held executive leadership roles at SolarWinds, as well as leadership positions at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas McCombs School of Business and an MBA from Southern Methodist University’s Edwin L. Cox School of Business. His background in transformation and acquisition integration is directly relevant to the responsibilities KnowBe4 described.

KnowBe4’s leadership profile continues to list him as CIO and says he also leads the company’s enterprise program-management and integration offices.
Why the hire fits KnowBe4’s changing business
The strategic connection is an inference, rather than a stated explanation for the hire. KnowBe4 has been expanding beyond its traditional emphasis on security-awareness training and phishing simulations. Its HRM+ positioning brings together training, phishing defense, email security, real-time coaching, compliance capabilities and risk measurement. The company said the platform followed its acquisition of Egress, combining KnowBe4’s training business with Egress’s AI-powered email-security technology.

A broader portfolio assembled across products and acquisitions can mean more integration work across technology, processes and teams. Kemmerer’s experience makes him a plausible fit for that environment, and his current integration-office remit reinforces the relevance. But KnowBe4’s appointment announcement did not say he was hired specifically to integrate Egress. It announced neither a new acquisition nor a timetable or financial target for integration.
Later developments put the appointment in context
KnowBe4’s subsequent announcements have extended its platform ambitions toward protecting both people and AI agents. The company has described AIDA—Artificial Intelligence Defense Agents—as part of its approach to AI-generated phishing and measuring human cyber risk. In 2026, it announced Agent Risk Manager and a Custom SAPA Agent, among other AI-agent developments. These are later product developments, not initiatives identified in the August 2025 CIO announcement.
KnowBe4 currently says it serves more than 70,000 organizations worldwide. That is the company’s own stated figure, not an independently verified count. The evolving product scope and stated scale provide context for why operational coordination and integration may matter, but they do not establish a specific outcome from Kemmerer’s appointment.
CIO is not the same as CISO
Kemmerer was named CIO, not chief information security officer (CISO). The announcement describes a remit centered on digital transformation, enterprise program management, operational performance and integration. It does not establish that he is KnowBe4’s top security executive or that he directly owns product engineering, information security or data privacy.

The appointment’s impact will be clearer if KnowBe4 later reports concrete changes: how it integrates acquired businesses and products, whether internal systems or operating processes change, and how those efforts affect customer onboarding or service delivery. The 2025 announcement set broad priorities, but did not provide project names, deadlines or measurable targets against which to judge progress.
