On March 26, 2013, Wells Fargo said unusually heavy traffic was disrupting its online-banking website and that it believed the traffic represented a denial-of-service attack. Some customers had intermittent trouble logging in, but the bank said most customers were unaffected and that customer information remained safe. Contemporary coverage often called the incident a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, although Wells Fargo’s own wording was “denial of service.”
This was a historical service-availability incident—not a currently reported Wells Fargo outage. The public reporting available at the time did not establish a customer-data breach or prove who launched the traffic.
What Wells Fargo reported
Wells Fargo described an “unusually high volume” of traffic hitting its website. The bank said it believed the traffic was a denial-of-service attack, in which excessive requests make a service difficult for legitimate users to reach. The bank did not publish a public forensic report detailing the attack method, source infrastructure, traffic volume aimed specifically at Wells Fargo, or a definitive timeline.
Wells Fargo said the disruption was intermittent and that the vast majority of customers were not affected. Customers who could not sign in were generally advised to try again later. That guidance is important: reports described access problems, not a verified, continuous shutdown of every Wells Fargo banking channel.

SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous account reported the bank’s assessment and its statement that customer information was safe.
What customers experienced
Users reported difficulty reaching or logging in to online banking during the morning and early afternoon. The Los Angeles Times cited more than 200 outage reports on Sitedown.co during that period, while also noting that Wells Fargo said most customers were unaffected.
Some contemporaneous coverage mentioned mobile-banking problems as well as website access. The strongest official descriptions focused on the online-banking website, so it is more accurate to say that mobile access was also reported as problematic in some accounts—not that every mobile or branch service failed.

No customer-data compromise was reported in the cited contemporary coverage. Wells Fargo said customer information remained safe, and the incident was publicly characterized as an availability problem rather than an intrusion into account records.

A DDoS attack is not automatically a data breach. Its primary purpose is to overwhelm a website or related service with traffic, preventing or delaying legitimate access. However, disruption can sometimes be used to distract defenders while another intrusion or fraud attempt is made. That was a general security concern raised in reporting, not evidence that such a secondary operation occurred at Wells Fargo.
Therefore, the careful conclusion is: Wells Fargo reported no known compromise of customer information in connection with this event, but the available public sources do not amount to an independently published forensic audit proving that no other activity was possible.
Who claimed responsibility?
The self-described Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters claimed responsibility for attacks against U.S. financial institutions and listed Wells Fargo among its targets in online postings. Contemporary reports said the group’s stated motive was opposition to the continued availability of the anti-Islam film commonly known as Innocence of Muslims.

Public reporting did not conclusively establish the group’s identity, operational control of the Wells Fargo traffic, or Iranian government sponsorship. Some coverage and later analysis discussed possible links to Iran, but it would be inaccurate to state as fact that the Iranian government attacked Wells Fargo.

The Wells Fargo disruption was reported as one episode in a broader sequence of attacks against major U.S. banks that began in September 2012 and resumed in March 2013. Other named targets included Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, PNC, SunTrust, U.S. Bancorp, BB&T and Fifth Third.
The attackers referred to the campaign as Operation Ababil; that name came from their own communications and should be attributed accordingly. Some reports described earlier attacks in the campaign at roughly 80–100 Gbps, but that figure should not be treated as a measurement of the Wells Fargo incident.
Reuters-sourced reporting also said Wells Fargo customers had experienced website-access problems for at least four days in December 2012. That history provides context, but it does not prove that the December problems and the March 26 event had identical causes.

Dark Reading’s campaign coverage separated the attackers’ claims from confirmed facts, while a Reuters-syndicated report provided additional context about the earlier access problems.
What remains unknown
- The exact duration of the March 26 disruption and the full number of affected users.
- The attack’s precise technical method, source network, peak volume and mitigation measures.
- Whether the claimed Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters operation actually generated the traffic.
- Whether any parallel fraud, credential theft or attempted intrusion occurred.
- Whether customers incurred losses or fees specifically because of the access problems.
What the incident meant for customers
An inaccessible banking website does not, by itself, show that an account has been emptied or that credentials were stolen. At the time, the practical advice reported from Wells Fargo was to try again later and use established support channels if access continued to fail. Customers could also try other available banking channels, while recognizing that some reports mentioned mobile-access difficulties too.
The incident illustrates why precise language matters. Wells Fargo’s statement supports a reported denial-of-service assessment and intermittent availability problems. It does not independently establish every technical detail, and the attackers’ public claim does not prove attribution.
