Cybersecurity startup Reken announced an oversubscribed $10 million seed round on January 31, 2024, led by Greycroft and FPV Ventures. At the time, co-founders Shuman Ghosemajumder and Rich Griffiths were still keeping the product under wraps. Reken emerged from stealth on July 13, 2026, introducing an on-device security platform called Private Core and its first application, Northstar, which is available through an Early Access Program.
What Reken’s $10 million seed round funded
Reken said the seed financing would support research and development of a cybersecurity platform aimed at AI-enabled threats. The round was described as oversubscribed and led by Greycroft and FPV Ventures. Firebolt Ventures, Fika Ventures, Omega Venture Partners, Homebrew, and JAZZ Venture Partners also participated. Greycroft partner Marcie Vu joined Reken’s board.
The announcement did not disclose a company valuation, investor ownership, revenue, customer count, or commercial contract values. “Oversubscribed” indicates that demand exceeded the amount offered, but Reken did not publish allocation or demand figures. The financing was a bet on the team and its proposed direction—not, by itself, evidence that the product worked or had paying customers. SecurityWeek’s coverage of the 2024 announcement reported that the product had not yet been publicly demonstrated.
Who founded Reken?
Reken was co-founded by CEO Shuman Ghosemajumder and COO Rich Griffiths. Ghosemajumder previously founded Google’s Trust & Safety product group, served as CTO of Shape Security, and later led AI at F5. Griffiths was vice president of product at Shape Security. Reken’s later launch materials say Shape Security was acquired by F5 in 2020 for approximately $1 billion.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
That experience helps explain the founders’ focus on fraud, automation, and impersonation. Ghosemajumder’s earlier work included combating systems that simulated human behavior. But a founder’s track record is background, not independent validation of a new security product. Reken’s company biography describes how it connects that experience to its current thesis.
The threat Reken set out to address
Reken’s 2024 argument was that generative AI could make phishing, fraud, impersonation, deepfakes, and social engineering more convincing and easier to scale. Its proposed answer was broader than trying to identify whether a message, image, or voice recording was AI-generated. AI-generated content can be legitimate; whether a communication is dangerous may depend on its source, context, behavior, and purpose.
The company described an approach combining content analysis, scrutiny of a communication’s source and context, and detection of suspicious or automated behavior. The aim was to distinguish benign AI use from adversarial activity. These were Reken’s stated plans while it was in stealth, not published performance results.

What Reken disclosed after stealth
On July 13, 2026, after roughly two years of research and development, Reken announced its emergence from stealth and introduced three connected pieces of its product direction: Private Core, the Reken Network, and Northstar. This is the important update to the original funding story: the January 2024 announcement was a financing event, not the public launch of a demonstrated product. Reken’s launch announcement sets out the company’s claims about the system.
Private Core: an on-device security system
Reken describes Private Core as an on-device AI security system that analyzes communications to and from devices, accounts, and users. The company says proprietary models and telemetry sensors are intended to identify threats, bots, automation, deceptive content, and other suspicious behavior while keeping communication data on the device.
Reken also says Private Core is designed to run on commodity hardware without GPUs or additional AI-token costs. Those are company claims, not independently verified benchmarks. On-device analysis may reduce the need to send communication content to a cloud service, but it does not by itself settle every privacy question. Buyers would still need to understand what telemetry leaves devices, what administrators can inspect, how models are updated, and how information is handled during incident response.

Reken Network: a proposed trust layer
Reken says products using Private Core can form a broader Reken Network—a trust layer for online communications. In the company’s description, communications from outside that network would be analyzed for malicious behavior and deceptive content. The usefulness of such a model may depend in part on how many organizations and participants join; the launch announcement does not establish how extensive the network is or how it performs in use.

Northstar: the first announced application
Northstar is positioned as just-in-time AI defense for employees facing phishing, business-email compromise, social engineering, deepfakes, AI-enabled fraud, and other suspicious communications. It is offered through an Early Access Program, with organizations invited to apply through Reken’s official website. Public materials reviewed for this article do not provide transparent pricing, seat minimums, contract terms, or a generally available self-service purchase option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a prospective customer should verify
Early access can give an organization a chance to evaluate an emerging product, but Northstar should not be treated as a proven replacement for existing controls on the basis of the financing or launch announcement. Public information does not establish independently tested detection rates, false-positive rates, customer case studies, or measurable improvements over secure email gateways, identity controls, endpoint security, and employee training.

Before an evaluation, a security team should ask Reken for:
- Supported operating systems, devices, browsers, email platforms, and identity providers.
- Deployment requirements and how the product works with unmanaged devices, encrypted messaging, remote desktops, and browser-based applications.
- A data-flow diagram explaining what stays on-device and what telemetry, if any, leaves it.
- Detection and false-positive metrics, testing methods, and customer or design-partner references.
- Details on model-update signing, distribution, rollback, incident response, and false-positive appeals.
- Pricing, contract terms, security assessments, and a clear plan for removing the product if an evaluation ends.
These questions matter because a communication-security system can miss new attacks, flag legitimate senders, or create alert fatigue. A zero-trust approach also needs to explain how it handles legitimate communications from outside its network. Reken’s public launch materials describe an intended architecture, but do not answer all of these operational questions.
Why the funding story matters—and what it does not prove
Reken’s seed round reflects investor interest in cybersecurity products built for a world in which AI can assist both legitimate work and attacks. The company’s later disclosure moves the story beyond an undisclosed stealth project: it now has a stated architecture and an initial application for organizations to evaluate.
Still, the distinction between a funded startup, an announced product, and a validated security tool is important. Reken’s direction is a broad communications-security proposition, not simply a deepfake detector, and Northstar is currently presented as early access. Until deployment evidence and independent testing are available, its claims should be assessed as product positioning rather than established protection.
Financial context: the $10 million figure is a company funding announcement, not a valuation or a measure of customer traction. No valuation, revenue, pricing, or ownership terms were disclosed in the sources cited here.
