McAfee announced on September 30, 2011, that Jean-Claude Broido would become president of its Japanese subsidiary effective October 1. Takahiro Kato, the outgoing president, became chairman. Broido took responsibility for both consumer and enterprise operations in Japan—not the worldwide McAfee organization.
What changed in McAfee Japan’s leadership?
The appointment transferred the operating presidency to Broido while keeping Kato involved as chairman. Contemporary coverage described Kato as continuing to support the business after more than 12 years of leadership; it did not say he left the company. Broido reported to Joe Sexton, then McAfee’s executive vice president of global sales. The Japanese reports rendered Broido’s title as representative director and president, while English-language reports generally called him president.
The announcement date and effective date are different: McAfee announced the decision on September 30, and Broido’s appointment took effect October 1, 2011. The transition applied to the Japan subsidiary, not to McAfee globally. SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous report and ITmedia Enterprise’s account report those dates and roles.
What experience did Broido bring?
McAfee’s announcement described Broido as having more than 30 years of international sales and marketing experience across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Japan. His career included roles at Intel, Cadence Design Systems, and Digital Equipment Corporation. Before joining McAfee, he was senior vice president of international sales at EMC’s Information Intelligence Group; earlier, he had been executive vice president and general manager for EMEA at Documentum.

That record points chiefly to commercial, international, and general-management leadership. The appointment coverage does not establish that he was selected for a technical cybersecurity-specialist background. McAfee executive Joe Sexton said the company had completed an extensive search and emphasized Broido’s international sales and marketing experience, general-management background, and ability to support customers and channel partners. What was Broido responsible for?
Broido led McAfee Japan’s consumer and enterprise businesses. That made the role broader than managing a single product line or sales territory: it covered the company’s business serving individual users as well as organizations.

In remarks reported at the time, Broido said he wanted to expand McAfee’s business in Japan, strengthen relationships with channel partners, and build the company’s position as a trusted security vendor. He also pointed to growing security needs as smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices became more prevalent. Those were stated priorities, not evidence that the appointment itself produced a particular product launch, market-share change, or financial result. How did the appointment fit McAfee’s Intel-era strategy?
In 2011, McAfee was a wholly owned Intel subsidiary. The companies were working together on security technologies, including approaches linking protection across devices and using hardware capabilities. In that setting, a country president with extensive international enterprise-sales experience could be relevant to customers, distributors, and channel partners across both consumer and business markets. That is context for the appointment, not proof that Broido’s arrival caused a specific Intel-McAfee initiative.
A 2013 interview described McAfee Japan as pursuing further growth while maintaining its established business. At that later point, consumer and enterprise operations each represented a significant part of the Japan business; that later description should not be read as a measured split for 2011. Diamond Online’s 2013 interview also confirms Broido was still identified as McAfee Japan’s president then.

The 2013 interview establishes that Broido continued to be described as McAfee Japan president after his appointment. A later Frost & Sullivan profile identifies him as a former McAfee Japan president and as vice president of IBM Security for Asia Pacific. These sources establish career continuity, but they do not give a precise date for his departure from McAfee Japan.
