Amazon announced on June 21, 2022, that Doug Herrington would become CEO of its Worldwide Amazon Stores business, effective in July 2022. The appointment made Herrington the leader of Amazon’s broad retail and consumer organization—not the CEO of Amazon itself. Andy Jassy remains Amazon’s corporate CEO.
What Amazon announced
Herrington succeeded Dave Clark, who had led the organization when it was known as Worldwide Consumer. Amazon also renamed the group Worldwide Amazon Stores.
The change was both a leadership succession and an organizational restructuring. Amazon said its Operations organization would be brought together under John Felton, who would report to Herrington. That included global import and export, fulfillment-related operations, Amazon Logistics and last-mile delivery services.
Clark announced on June 3, 2022, that he would leave Amazon, with his final day scheduled for July 1. He later became CEO of logistics company Flexport. The available announcement does not establish that Clark was fired or identify a specific performance-related reason for his departure.

Who is Doug Herrington?
Herrington joined Amazon in 2005 to build its consumables business. He launched AmazonFresh in 2007 and became senior vice president of North America Consumer in 2015, overseeing online and physical consumer businesses.
Before Amazon, Herrington founded and led KeepMedia and served on the executive team of online grocery company Webvan. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
That background gave him experience across grocery, consumables, digital retail and customer operations. Amazon’s announcement presented those experiences as relevant to a much broader stores mandate; it did not say the appointment was solely or primarily a grocery strategy.

Amazon’s investor-relations biography lists Herrington as CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores and records his July 2022 start date.
What Worldwide Amazon Stores covers
“Worldwide Stores” is broader than a conventional online retail division. At the time of the 2022 announcement, Amazon identified the following areas and leaders within the organization:
- International Stores, led by Russ Grandinetti
- North America Stores, led by Christine Beauchamp
- Physical Stores, led by Tony Hoggett
- eCommerce Foundation, led by Dave Treadwell
- Pharmacy, Amazon Care and Healthcare, led by Neil Lindsay
- Selling Partner Services, led by Dharmesh Mehta
- Buy with Prime, led by Peter Larsen
- Chief Economist, Pat Bajari
- Operations, led by John Felton
Amazon’s current biography describes Herrington’s remit as including online and mobile shopping experiences, global operations and fulfillment, Prime, grocery, Amazon Business, Selling Partner Services and Amazon Health Services. The individual reporting lines have changed since 2022, so the original announcement should not be treated as a current organizational chart.

Why the appointment mattered
The announcement came as Amazon’s retail business moved beyond the extraordinary conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, demand for online shopping rose sharply, and Amazon expanded its workforce, warehouses and delivery capacity. As consumer behavior began to normalize, the company faced slower online-sales growth and pressure to reduce the cost of serving customers without sacrificing selection or delivery speed.

Bringing Stores and Operations into a more closely aligned structure could help Amazon coordinate inventory, fulfillment, delivery speed, seller services and physical retail.
It also created a leadership framework for balancing two competing priorities: improving efficiency in an expanded operating network while continuing to invest in long-term opportunities such as grocery, physical stores and marketplace growth.

What the name change signaled
The move from “Worldwide Consumer” to “Worldwide Amazon Stores” emphasized the breadth of the organization’s retail ecosystem. The label covered more than Amazon’s website: it included physical stores, grocery, Prime, marketplace services, fulfillment and related consumer businesses.
Amazon did not publicly give a detailed explanation for the terminology change. It is therefore safer to describe the new name as an organizational and branding change rather than proof of a specific new strategy. Analysts could reasonably interpret it as a clearer effort to unify Amazon’s retail operations, but that interpretation is not an explicit company statement.

The 2022 arrangement did not remain static:
- 2024: John Felton moved from Worldwide Operations to become senior vice president and CFO of AWS. Udit Madan took over leadership of Worldwide Operations, according to Amazon’s leadership update.
- 2025: Jason Buechel, while continuing as CEO of Whole Foods Market, took expanded responsibility for Worldwide Grocery Stores, as reported by Amazon.
- 2026: Amit Agarwal expanded his remit to lead Selling Partner Services and reported to Herrington. Dharmesh Mehta moved into a role as Andy Jassy’s technical adviser, according to Amazon’s February 2026 leadership update.
As of August 18, 2026, Amazon’s official investor-relations leadership page still lists Herrington as CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, a position he has held since July 2022.

The distinction investors and sellers should remember
Herrington is not Amazon’s overall chief executive. His role is the senior leadership position for Amazon’s Worldwide Amazon Stores organization, one of the company’s largest and most strategically important businesses. Andy Jassy remains the corporate CEO.
That distinction matters because the Stores organization influences Amazon’s retail sales, marketplace relationships, Prime experience, grocery activities and fulfillment network, while company-wide responsibilities also include businesses such as AWS and advertising.
In announcing the change, Jassy also framed Amazon’s retail opportunity by citing the company’s own estimates about its share of worldwide retail and physical stores. Those figures were part of Amazon’s strategic argument in 2022, not independently verified current market-share measurements, and should be understood in that context.
