Short answer: Samsung has the more expensive overall phone lineup, but an equivalent entry-level flagship costs almost exactly the same. In the U.S., the iPhone 17 starts at $799, while the 128GB Galaxy S26 starts at $799.99. Samsung becomes substantially more expensive with the Galaxy S26 Ultra and its foldable phones, although Samsung’s discounts and trade-in promotions can make a particular Galaxy cheaper at checkout.
The fairest comparison is model-to-model: match the phone category, storage capacity, purchase channel, trade-in assumptions, and promotion before deciding which brand costs more.

The following prices are U.S. figures checked on August 18, 2026. MSRP means the listed unlocked price before tax, trade-in, and temporary promotions.

Apple lists the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro at their respective starting prices. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP list provides the Galaxy prices and storage tiers.

The direct flagship comparison is essentially a tie
For a shopper choosing a conventional flagship at the entry point, the iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26 are the relevant comparison. Their starting prices differ by just 99 cents: $799 versus $799.99.
That does not mean the phones are identical. They use different operating systems, ecosystems, cameras, displays, software features, and financing options. It means price alone does not establish a winner at this tier. Choose based on iOS versus Android, your existing devices and services, camera and video priorities, customization, app preferences, carrier compatibility, and the accessories you already own.
Apple’s product page highlights features including Apple Intelligence, USB-C, satellite emergency features, a 48MP camera system, and up to 30 hours of video playback. For Samsung’s exact hardware and Galaxy AI specifications, consult the official Galaxy S26 page.

The listed starting price for the iPhone 17 Pro is $1,099. The Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at $1,299.99 for 256GB, making Samsung’s model $200.99 more expensive at MSRP.
This is a useful premium-tier comparison, but it is not a perfect like-for-like match. The S26 Ultra is positioned as a larger Ultra-class phone with a different camera system, display size, storage range, and S Pen functionality. Those features may matter enough to justify its price for some buyers, but a higher price does not automatically make it a better phone.

Compare the iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want maximum conventional flagship hardware. If you do not need a large display, advanced telephoto hardware, high storage, or an S Pen, a lower-priced model may be the better financial decision.
Storage can change the answer
Always put storage beside the price. A 128GB iPhone compared with a 512GB Galaxy is not a fair cost comparison.
Samsung lists the Galaxy S26 at $799.99 for 128GB, $899.99 for 256GB, and $1,099.99 for 512GB. The Galaxy S26+ starts at $1,099.99 for 256GB and rises to $1,299.99 for 512GB. The Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at $1,299.99 for 256GB and $1,499.99 for 512GB.
Apple’s cited buying page lists starting prices, but storage configurations do not always line up exactly with Samsung’s. When capacities differ, say so rather than presenting the models as equivalent.
Samsung’s sale prices can reverse the result
MSRP answers the stable list-price question. It does not necessarily tell you what you will pay today.

- 256GB: $1,049.99, reduced from $1,299.99.
- 512GB: $1,249.99, reduced from $1,499.99.
- 1TB: $1,549.99, reduced from $1,799.99.
These are promotional direct-store prices, not the ordinary MSRP comparison. Check the live Samsung purchase page before buying because promotions, inventory, trade-in bonuses, and delivery terms can change.
Apple also offers trade-in and carrier-connected purchasing options through its iPhone buying flow. A sale price, trade-in-adjusted price, and carrier price should never be mixed into one table without labels.
Samsung offers both cheaper and more expensive phones
Samsung is not simply the expensive brand. Its catalog reaches much lower than Apple’s flagship-focused current iPhone range. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP list includes:
- Galaxy A16 5G, 128GB: $169.99.
- Galaxy A17 5G, 128GB: $199.99.
- Galaxy A26 5G, 128GB: $299.99.
- Galaxy A36 5G, 128GB: $399.99.
- Galaxy A56 5G, 128GB: $499.99.
- Galaxy S25 FE, 128GB: $649.99.
These phones are not direct performance equivalents to an iPhone 17. They demonstrate that Samsung gives shoppers more choices at lower price points.

At the other end, Samsung reaches far higher. Its listed prices include the Galaxy Z Flip7 from $1,099.99, the Galaxy Z Fold7 from $1,999.99, and the Galaxy Z TriFold at $2,899 for the listed 512GB configuration. Apple currently has no iPhone foldable category to compare directly.
Why foldables make Samsung’s lineup more expensive
The Galaxy Z Flip7, Z Fold7, and TriFold are specialized products rather than ordinary alternatives to a standard iPhone. Their prices reflect folding displays, hinges, unusual form factors, and—especially for the Fold and TriFold—tablet-like multitasking potential.
If you only need a phone for calls, messaging, social media, photography, and everyday apps, paying nearly $2,000 or $2,899 for a foldable may provide little financial value. Choose a foldable because its form factor solves a real problem, not simply because it sits higher in Samsung’s range.
Samsung’s official pages for the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Fold7 are the appropriate places to check current configurations and offers. Availability and pricing for the TriFold should also be confirmed on Samsung’s current store page before purchase.

The phone with the lower MSRP is not always the phone with the lower net cost. Trade-in value depends on the exact device, storage, condition, carrier, and promotion. Manufacturer pages may also advertise a price that assumes a qualifying trade-in.

Carrier promotions commonly require a new line, an eligible unlimited plan, a qualifying trade-in, and monthly bill credits over a fixed period. A phone described as “free” may therefore still require you to remain with that carrier until all credits are issued.
Before accepting a deal, write down:
- The phone’s full retail price.
- The immediate discount, if any.
- The trade-in value and whether it is promotional.
- The required service plan and new-line conditions.
- The monthly bill credit and how many months it lasts.
- What happens to the remaining balance if you leave the carrier early.
- Whether the device is unlocked and when it becomes eligible for unlocking.
Apple notes through its buying flow that carrier-financed iPhones may remain locked until paid in full. Samsung’s direct purchase page similarly presents carrier deals and Samsung trade-in options. Treat bill credits as a contractual payment arrangement, not as an instant price reduction.
The real purchase cost includes more than the phone
Your actual budget should include:
- Sales tax.
- A case and screen protection.
- A compatible USB-C charger and other charging accessories.
- AppleCare+ or Samsung Care+, if purchased.
- Wireless service.
- Financing interest or fees.
- The value of your trade-in or the money you could receive from a private sale.
- Expected repair costs and the financial consequences of accidental damage.
- Any loss of flexibility caused by carrier lock-in or bill-credit obligations.
Accessory requirements are not necessarily identical. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra purchase information says a charger is not included and that the box includes a USB-C data cable. Verify included accessories for the exact model rather than assuming every phone bundle is the same.

How to compare a live iPhone or Galaxy deal
- Choose equivalent product classes. Compare iPhone 17 with Galaxy S26, not a base iPhone with an Ultra or foldable.
- Match storage. Record the capacity beside every price.
- Use unlocked MSRP first. This gives you a clean baseline.
- Record the current sale price separately. Include the date and the store offering it.
- Calculate the trade-in-adjusted cost. Use the exact model and condition of your old phone.
- Add required service and accessories. Include tax, protection, charging equipment, and plan costs.
- Check the exit cost. Understand carrier credits, device locks, financing balances, and return windows.
- Decide whether the premium feature matters. Do not pay for a foldable, stylus, storage, or camera hardware you will not use.
