A January 2026 report from China warned that power-supply and heatsink costs could rise, but it did not prove a worldwide retail-price hike. A notice attributed to Guangzhou Xinhong Zhengdian Electronic Technology reportedly projected 6–10% higher costs for individual PSUs and 6–8% higher heatsink costs, citing copper, silver, and tin prices. That is a supplier-cost warning—not evidence that every brand, retailer, or US buyer paid 6–10% more.
What the reported notice actually said
The underlying notice was reported by MyDrivers and summarized by Notebookcheck on January 11, 2026.
According to the reports, factories allegedly stopped accepting new orders at old prices after January 6. The notice reportedly said promotional pricing would end on February 1, returning products to normal pricing, with more than 90% of products expected to receive an additional per-item increase.

Cost increase versus the price you pay
Several different events can be described as a “price hike”:
| Stage | What it means |
|---|---|
| Raw-material increase | Copper, silver, tin, aluminum, steel, or other inputs become more expensive. |
| Factory-price increase | A manufacturer charges an OEM or brand more for new orders. |
| Distributor increase | Wholesalers reprice new shipments or inventory. |
| MSRP increase | A brand officially raises its suggested retail price. |
| Discount removal | A temporary promotion ends, making the product look more expensive without an equivalent MSRP change. |
| Street-price increase | The amount consumers actually pay rises after discounts, stock, competition, taxes, and shipping are considered. |
A 6–10% increase in manufacturing cost does not automatically create a 6–10% retail increase. A product’s final price also includes labor, electronics, freight, tariffs, currency movements, warranty costs, channel margins, inventory purchased earlier, and retailer promotions. Brands may absorb some of the increase, reduce margins, change materials, or delay a price adjustment.
Why PSUs and coolers use the cited materials
Power supplies
Power supplies use copper in wiring, windings, PCB conductors, and connectors. Tin is important in soldering and some plating processes, while silver may be used in selected electrical contacts and high-performance components. Aluminum and steel can also affect enclosure and thermal-design costs, although the reported notice specifically emphasized copper, silver, and tin.

The report referred broadly to “power supplies.” Exposure will vary by design. An entry-level ATX unit, an SFX model, a server supply, and a 1,600-watt enthusiast PSU do not have identical bills of materials, supplier contracts, or distribution channels.
CPU coolers
“CPU coolers” covers tower air coolers, low-profile models, all-in-one liquid coolers, custom-loop radiators and water blocks, replacement fans, and mounting kits. The notice specifically discussed heatsinks, so metal-intensive air coolers and heatsink assemblies may have more direct exposure than every complete AIO.
AIO pricing also reflects pumps, tubing, fans, controllers, displays, packaging, software, logistics, and warranty costs. A reported heatsink-cost increase should not be translated into an identical increase for every 240 mm, 280 mm, or 360 mm AIO.

Why this is not the same as RAM and SSD inflation
RAM and SSD prices are heavily influenced by memory-chip production, inventory cycles, factory allocation, semiconductor demand, and data-center purchasing. PSUs and coolers are more directly exposed to metals, electrical components, mechanical manufacturing, freight, and channel pricing.

AI infrastructure can affect the broader hardware supply chain, but the cited PSU and heatsink notice attributed its stated increases primarily to raw-material costs. It does not establish that AI data-center orders directly caused consumer PSU or cooler inflation. Server and accelerator systems can also use different power architectures, cooling designs, and procurement channels from consumer PCs.
What is established—and what is not
| Supported by the available reporting | Not established |
|---|---|
| A China-based supplier notice was reported. | A worldwide retail-price increase. |
| The notice cited copper, silver, and tin costs. | A universal consumer shortage. |
| The notice projected PSU and heatsink cost increases. | That US retailers adopted the same percentages. |
| Promotional pricing was reportedly scheduled to end February 1. | That all global retail prices changed on that date. |
| The notice claimed more than 90% of products would receive an additional increase. | The product list, methodology, or realized increase behind that claim. |
The January report should therefore be treated as an earlier warning about possible supplier and channel pressure, not as proof that US consumers faced a confirmed, uniform price surge by the time of later 2026 coverage. The available dossier contains no manufacturer price lists, major-brand statements, US retailer price histories, or verified US-wide outcome.

What US buyers should do
US pricing can diverge from China-based supplier pricing because of existing inventory, freight, tariffs and customs treatment, exchange rates, brand contracts, retailer competition, regional promotions, and product mix. No US-wide increase is established by the cited report.
Buy sooner when all of these are true
- Your build or repair is planned within the next few weeks.
- The exact PSU or cooler is genuinely discounted against its recent normal price.
- You need a specialized SFX or SFX-L unit, a particular radiator size, mounting kit, connector, or clearance profile.
- You need a high-wattage ATX 3.x/PCIe 5.x PSU with a native modern GPU cable.
- The replacement is needed for a failing component.
Wait when
- The build is months away.
- You are considering widely available mainstream models.
- The current product is overpriced, poorly tested, or difficult to return.
- You have not selected the CPU and GPU, so power and cooling requirements may change.
Do not buy unsuitable hardware merely because a regional pricing warning sounds urgent. A temporary discount on a compatible, well-tested product can be sensible; panic-buying or paying a large premium for excessive capacity is not.
PSU checklist before paying
- Estimate consumption from the CPU, GPU, drives, fans, pump, and USB-powered devices.
- Allow reasonable transient and upgrade headroom without equating wattage with quality.
- Confirm the required connector standard and whether the unit includes a native modern GPU cable.
- Check independent electrical testing, ripple, voltage regulation, protections, warranty, regional support, and acoustic behavior.
- Verify the voltage range, regional model number, physical dimensions, and case clearance.
- Never assume modular cables are interchangeable between brands or product families; an incompatible cable can damage components.
Efficiency certification is useful, but it should be a secondary criterion rather than a substitute for electrical testing and warranty support. Reputable manufacturers include Corsair, Seasonic, be quiet!, and Cooler Master; individual models still require model-specific evaluation.

CPU-cooler checklist before paying
Air coolers are usually simpler and avoid pump and coolant-loop failure modes. Check maximum cooler height, RAM clearance, motherboard-heatsink interference, mounting pressure, fan clearance, socket support, and included hardware. Large dual-tower models can obstruct tall memory or motherboard components.
AIO liquid coolers can help with high-heat CPUs and socket-area clearance, but verify radiator size and mounting position, pump and fan noise, controller requirements, warranty terms, replacement policy, and socket brackets. A higher price does not guarantee better sustained performance.
Before buying any cooler, confirm:
- CPU socket and platform support
- Case cooler-height and radiator compatibility
- RAM, GPU, motherboard, and fan clearances
- Included backplate and mounting hardware
- Whether a newer socket requires an additional bracket
- Return terms if the hardware does not fit
Model ranges from Noctua, ARCTIC, Cooler Master, and NZXT illustrate the range from premium air cooling to feature-focused AIOs. Compare the exact model, not just the brand or product category.

Check the current US list price, sale price, shipping, tax, stock status, warranty region, connector contents, and mounting hardware. Use price history where available. A product may appear to rise simply because a coupon or limited promotion ended, while another may remain flat because a retailer still holds older inventory.
The most reliable personal-finance approach is to set a target price for a compatible, independently tested component and buy when that price is fair. Do not treat the reported February 1 date as a universal deadline, and do not assume a product will become scarce merely because a supplier notice predicted higher costs.
