Short answer: not as a blanket price cut. Samsung’s 2025 launch promotion offered up to $900 in U.S. trade-in credit, and that figure equals about 69.2% of the $1,299.99 launch price of the 256GB Galaxy S25 Ultra. That is the likely source of the “70% off” headline.
It did not mean every Galaxy S25 model was marked down 70%, and it was not an unconditional discount. The maximum savings required an eligible high-value phone in qualifying condition. The launch promotion began on January 22, 2025, general availability started February 7, 2025, and the strongest launch benefits should now be treated as historical unless a current checkout page confirms otherwise.
How the 70% figure was calculated
The calculation is straightforward:
- Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB launch MSRP: $1,299.99
- Maximum reported U.S. trade-in credit: up to $900
- $900 ÷ $1,299.99: 69.2%
- Remaining phone price before tax and other credits: $399.99
Rounded up, 69.2% becomes “about 70% off.” But this was a maximum trade-in-credit calculation, not Samsung reducing the retail price of the phone by 70%. The buyer had to surrender an eligible device, and the old phone itself had resale value.
Samsung’s official launch announcement described the trade-in program and launch benefits. Contemporary reporting from TechRadar reported trade-in savings of up to $900 and Samsung credit of up to $300 during the launch period.

Which Galaxy S25 was actually “70% off”?
The headline is ambiguous because “Galaxy S25” can refer to the entire series. The math aligns most closely with the S25 Ultra, not the standard S25.

The prices above come from Samsung’s U.S. MSRP price list. Storage upgrades, where offered, should not be confused with a 70% discount on the phone itself.
What Samsung’s launch promotion included
The launch package combined several different benefits. They should not all be treated as cash taken off the phone’s purchase price.

- Accessories and protection: Certain markets or promotions included accessory savings, Galaxy Buds offers, or discounts on Samsung Care+.
- Carrier incentives: T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T advertised separate offers that could make an eligible phone appear free or heavily discounted through monthly bill credits.
Samsung announced the series on January 22, 2025, with pre-orders opening that day and general availability beginning February 7, 2025. The exact deadline and eligibility rules varied by market, seller, model, and inventory.

What you needed to receive the maximum trade-in value
“Up to $900” did not apply to every old phone. The maximum required a selected high-value device and qualifying condition. Your actual offer could be substantially lower based on:
- the old phone’s make, model, and storage capacity;
- screen and body condition;
- whether it powered on and held a charge;
- whether the display functioned correctly;
- blacklist, financing, leasing, or ownership status;
- activation locks or accounts still attached to the phone; and
- the specific S25 model and storage tier being purchased.
Samsung’s launch terms required the trade-in device to be owned by the customer, not blacklisted, reset, free of personal information, and released from software locks. It also needed a verified FCC ID where applicable and had to meet Samsung’s condition requirements. The phone had to be shipped within the specified window after the new device arrived.
Common trade-in problems
- Inspection downgrade: If the received phone does not match the submitted condition, Samsung may reduce the credit or charge back part of the transaction.
- Late shipment: Missing the return deadline can trigger a chargeback of the promotional credit.
- Activation locks: iCloud, Google, Samsung, or carrier locks can invalidate the trade-in.
- Cracked screens: A cracked-screen exception may exist for some promotions, but it must be confirmed for the exact offer.
- Financed or leased devices: You may not be able to trade in a phone that is still subject to another ownership or payment arrangement.

Samsung’s direct offer generally applies an estimated trade-in value during checkout. You typically buy an unlocked phone, pay the remaining balance upfront or through available financing, and send the old device after receiving the new one.

Carrier installment promotions
Carrier advertisements can produce a lower monthly phone payment, or even a phone that appears free, but the discount is commonly delivered through monthly bill credits over a fixed installment term. Requirements may include:
- a new line or qualifying upgrade;
- a specified unlimited plan;
- an installment agreement;
- continued service for the entire credit period; and
- payment of taxes, activation charges, and other fees.
For example, T-Mobile advertised up to $1,000 off eligible Galaxy S25 models for qualifying customers and plans. Verizon tied its launch offers to device-payment agreements and qualifying plans. AT&T also described an S25+ offer with trade-in and installment-plan requirements.
These are not equivalent to an unlocked Samsung.com discount. If you cancel the line, switch plans, or upgrade before the credits finish, the remaining device balance may become payable. A more expensive required plan can also erase the apparent phone savings.
How to calculate the real cost
Use this formula rather than relying on the headline:

New-phone price − actual trade-in value − immediate discounts + taxes and fees + required plan or financing costs − realistic alternative resale value of the old phone.
For the launch example, the advertised calculation was:
$1,299.99 − $900 = $399.99 before tax.
That is not necessarily your net cost. If the old phone could have sold privately for $750, the effective value of Samsung’s $900 offer is only $150 more than selling it yourself. If the deal included Samsung credit, count that at full value only if you would have bought the eligible accessories or services anyway. Store credit may expire, exclude products, or be unavailable as a cash refund.

Also include sales tax, activation fees, financing charges, protection plans, accessory purchases, and any additional carrier-plan cost. In some jurisdictions or carrier arrangements, tax may be calculated on the pre-credit price.

Is the Galaxy S25 70%-off deal still available?
The original launch window is over. Samsung announced the series on January 22, 2025, and general availability began February 7, 2025. Some benefits continued briefly after release, but their deadlines differed.
As of the latest information in the supplied record, the Samsung S25 offers page still displayed product and trade-in information, including a starting price of $799.99 before trade-in, but also contained references to promotions that expired in 2025. That makes it unsuitable as proof of a current 70%-off launch deal.
For a present-day purchase, select the exact model and storage tier at checkout, enter your trade-in device, and confirm the final credit, shipping deadline, financing terms, and expiration date. Do not rely on an undated headline or a page that continues to show old promotional language.

When the promotion was genuinely attractive
- You owned a recent premium phone that qualified for a high trade-in value.
- The phone was undamaged or otherwise met the specific condition rules.
- You wanted the S25 Ultra rather than the less expensive standard S25.
- You valued Samsung credit and could use it before expiration.
- You were already on the required carrier plan or genuinely wanted it.
- You could buy unlocked without adding unwanted insurance, financing, or services.
When it was less attractive
- Your old phone had a higher realistic private-sale value than Samsung’s quote.
- You needed to switch to a more expensive carrier plan to receive the credit.
- The advertised savings were spread over 24 to 36 months of bill credits.
- Your trade-in was leased, financed, damaged, locked, or otherwise ineligible.
- You needed a more expensive storage tier than the headline example.
- You would not otherwise buy the accessories or services covered by Samsung credit.
- A discounted previous-generation phone would meet your needs at a lower total cost.
Bottom line
The “Galaxy S25 is 70% off” claim was based on a real 2025 launch promotion, but it was a best-case calculation. The figure most likely described the $900 maximum trade-in credit applied to the $1,299.99 Galaxy S25 Ultra 256GB, producing a rounded 69.2% savings figure.
It was not a universal 70% markdown on the Galaxy S25 lineup, and it did not guarantee that every buyer would pay $399.99. Your result depended on the exact model, trade-in condition, credit type, carrier or financing requirements, taxes, fees, and the alternative value of your old phone. Treat the launch deal as expired unless a live, model-specific checkout confirms a new promotion.
