Atlassian acquired Toronto-based data-cataloging startup Secoda in a deal announced on December 4, 2025. The purchase price was not disclosed. Secoda’s team joined Atlassian, which plans to use the startup’s metadata, lineage and data-discovery capabilities to improve Rovo, its enterprise search, chat and AI-agent platform.
The deal gives Atlassian a stronger position in the race to make enterprise AI useful with structured business data—not just documents and tickets. But it does not yet prove that Secoda has been fully merged into Rovo or that customers’ products, pricing and contracts will immediately change.
What Atlassian bought
Secoda built a data catalog: a layer that inventories an organization’s data assets and adds context around them. Those assets can include warehouse tables, columns, dashboards, metrics, transformation models, pipelines and business-intelligence reports.

A catalog does not replace the warehouse, lake or database where information is stored. Instead, it helps people and software understand what exists, who owns it, how it is used and whether it can be trusted.

For example, a finance employee searching for a revenue metric might need to know:
- Which table or dashboard contains the authoritative figure;
- What the metric means and how it is calculated;
- Who owns the underlying dataset;
- Which pipelines and reports depend on it;
- Whether the data is current and subject to quality warnings; and
- Whether the employee has permission to view it.
Secoda’s product materials describe cataloging, lineage, documentation, governance, monitoring, data-quality scoring, API access, role-based access controls, personally identifiable information scanning and AI-assisted workflows. The company says its service generally collects metadata about data resources rather than pulling in most of the underlying data itself. That distinction matters for privacy, security reviews and implementation planning.
Secoda’s pricing page lists Core, Premium and Enterprise tiers, but the reviewed page does not display simple numeric prices. After the acquisition, prospective customers should also confirm whether Secoda is still sold as a standalone product and how its commercial model will evolve.

Why structured data matters to Rovo
Atlassian positions Rovo as an enterprise search, chat and agent platform connected to organizational context through the Teamwork Graph. Rovo can work across Atlassian products and connected applications, but useful answers depend on the quality of the context available to it.
Jira issues, Confluence pages and SaaS documents can explain what a company is doing. They do not necessarily explain which customer table is authoritative, how a finance metric is defined or what downstream reports will be affected by a schema change.
That is the gap Secoda could help address. Its catalog metadata can provide relationships and definitions that are particularly valuable to AI systems, including:
- Ownership of datasets and reports;
- Table- and column-level descriptions;
- Lineage between source systems, models and dashboards;
- Business definitions for metrics and terminology;
- Usage information that can help identify important or stale assets; and
- Quality, governance and permission signals.
In practical terms, Atlassian wants Rovo to move closer to answering questions such as “Which revenue metric should finance use?”, “Where does this dashboard number come from?”, “Which tables feed this report?” and “Who owns the customer-churn dataset?”

Atlassian has described Rovo as part of a broader strategy involving enterprise search, connected applications, governed automation and agents that can reason over organizational context.

What happens to Secoda customers?
Secoda said existing customers should not see immediate changes to their product experience and that customer continuity would be a priority during the transition. It also said parts of the infrastructure would move to Atlassian’s Cloud Platform, with technical plans and timelines communicated in advance.
That is a continuity commitment, not a guarantee that nothing will change over the longer term. Customers should seek specific answers on:
- Migration dates and any required customer action;
- Data residency and regional hosting;
- Security controls, audit logs and compliance documentation;
- Connector support for warehouses, BI platforms and transformation tools;
- API compatibility and metadata export;
- Service-level agreements and support channels;
- Contract ownership, renewal terms and future pricing;
- Whether self-hosted, single-tenant or private-cloud options remain available; and
- The roadmap for the standalone Secoda product.
Customers should also distinguish between product continuity and strategic continuity. A service can continue operating while its roadmap, packaging, target buyer or integration priorities change.

Secoda’s background
According to ITPro, Secoda was founded in 2021 and based in Toronto. The company raised a $14 million Series A in September 2023 led by Craft Ventures.
That figure should not be treated as Secoda’s total funding, valuation or acquisition price. The reviewed coverage does not disclose the purchase consideration or establish a valuation.
Why the deal matters to Atlassian
The acquisition supports several parts of Atlassian’s wider strategy.
It expands Rovo beyond work documents
Atlassian’s traditional strength is collaboration and work management. Secoda offers a route into the data systems used by analytics, engineering, operations and finance teams. That gives Rovo more relevance in workflows where the answer is held in a warehouse or BI system rather than a ticket or document.
It could improve AI grounding
Enterprise AI systems need reliable context and permission enforcement. A catalog can help distinguish an approved dataset from a similarly named or outdated one. It can also provide ownership and lineage information that a general search index may not contain.

If ownership is missing, lineage is stale or permissions are misconfigured, an AI assistant can still provide an incomplete or inappropriate answer.
It strengthens Atlassian’s platform argument
Atlassian can potentially distribute data-discovery capabilities through its existing cloud platform and Rovo customer base. That creates a plausible platform-consolidation and upsell opportunity, particularly for organizations already using Jira, Confluence and other Atlassian Cloud products.
It increases the importance of governance
As AI agents gain access to more enterprise systems, governance becomes part of the product rather than an optional administrative feature. Lineage, roles, auditability, regional hosting and access controls may be as important as the quality of the AI interface.
Risks and unanswered questions
Integration is technically difficult
Data catalogs depend on a large ecosystem of connectors, APIs, schemas, warehouses, lakehouses, BI tools, orchestration systems and transformation frameworks. Maintaining accurate metadata across those systems is a continuous operational challenge.
Metadata quality determines usefulness
A catalog can become another stale directory if descriptions are incomplete, owners leave the company, pipelines change or automated lineage fails. Rovo’s answers will not become reliable simply because a catalog exists.
Permissions create a serious AI risk
Making structured data searchable through an AI system can expose sensitive information if access rules are not carried through correctly. Buyers should ask how permissions are inherited, tested, logged and enforced at the table, column and report levels.
Cloud migration may affect enterprise controls
Moving infrastructure to Atlassian Cloud could simplify platform operations, but it may also raise questions about data residency, deployment models, tenant isolation, regional controls and existing security certifications.
The product direction is unclear
Secoda could remain a specialist catalog, become a Rovo capability, be packaged within an Atlassian collection or follow a hybrid path. The acquisition announcement does not establish which outcome will occur.

Does this change the data-catalog market?
The deal reflects a broader convergence between enterprise search, data catalogs, governance platforms, semantic layers and AI agents.

Specialist catalogs traditionally helped data teams find and govern technical assets. Enterprise AI platforms now need the same metadata to answer business questions safely. Work-management vendors, meanwhile, want their products to become the interface through which employees search, reason and act across the company.
That convergence could make catalogs more strategically important. It could also make buying decisions more complicated. A catalog does not replace data observability, warehouse security, master-data management or a semantic layer, even when a product bundles some of those capabilities.
Organizations with an established catalog may gain more from improved integration with work-management and AI tools than from replacing their existing platform. Smaller teams with only a few data sources may not need a full catalog at all. Highly regulated companies may prioritize deployment control, auditability and regional hosting over a close Rovo integration.

Companies considering a new platform should compare capabilities rather than assume the acquisition makes Atlassian the automatic choice.
- Secoda: A modern catalog and governance option with discovery, lineage, documentation, monitoring and AI-assisted workflows. Buyers should confirm its post-acquisition roadmap, hosting model and standalone availability. Official information.

During an evaluation, buyers should check connector coverage, table- and column-level lineage, business glossaries, metadata freshness, quality controls, PII discovery, RBAC, SSO, SCIM, audit logs, SIEM integration, deployment options, APIs, exportability, AI permission enforcement and implementation requirements.
Do not assume one platform is cheaper than another without current vendor quotes. The reviewed official pages generally do not provide comparable public numeric pricing, and Rovo’s commercial value may depend on existing Atlassian agreements, connected applications, usage limits and AI-credit arrangements.
The bottom line
Atlassian’s acquisition of Secoda is a strategic bet that Rovo needs a better understanding of structured business data. Secoda brings the metadata, lineage, ownership and discovery capabilities that can help connect enterprise AI to warehouses, models, dashboards and governed definitions.

Atlassian still needs to show how Secoda will be integrated, how customer contracts and deployments will be handled, and whether the specialist catalog experience remains accurate and well supported. For buyers, the acquisition is a reason to watch Atlassian closely—not a reason by itself to replace a mature governance platform.
