Apple Trade In is usually the easiest way to reduce the price of a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch—but it is not always the highest-paying option. Apple’s estimate depends on the exact model and condition, and an online quote can change after inspection. A carrier promotion may offer more total credit, while a private sale may produce more cash, but both can involve extra conditions and risk.
This guide explains how to check the current value, protect your data, compare alternatives, and avoid losing money through missed deadlines, account locks, or misleading “free phone” promotions.
Apple Trade In at a glance

Apple accepts many iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, as well as selected Samsung and Google smartphones. Exact eligibility changes by model, configuration, condition, and current valuation schedule, so use Apple’s live estimator rather than an old value chart.
When Apple Trade In is worth choosing
Choose Apple when convenience, privacy, and a straightforward upgrade matter more than maximizing the amount of cash you receive. It is particularly practical when:

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- You are already buying directly from Apple.
- Your device has moderate resale value and you do not want to list, negotiate, package, and support a private sale.
- You want an Apple Store inspection instead of mailing an expensive device.
- You want to avoid the long-term plan requirements attached to many carrier promotions.
- You prefer Apple credit and expect to buy Apple products again.
Apple is less attractive if you need cash, own a recent unlocked device in excellent condition, or can obtain a substantially higher net price elsewhere.
How much is your old Apple device worth?
Apple’s estimate is based on details such as:
- Exact model and generation
- Storage capacity
- Wi-Fi, cellular, or other connectivity configuration
- Whether the device powers on
- Display, rear glass, and body damage
- Battery and functional condition
- Camera, button, Face ID, or Touch ID operation
- Activation Lock and account status
- Current demand and Apple’s changing valuation schedule
For an accurate estimate, record the model, storage, serial number, and IMEI where relevant before opening the estimator. Answer condition questions conservatively. A cracked display, swollen battery, water damage, failed camera, missing button, or device that will not power on may reduce the value or make the device ineligible for credit.
Apple’s iPhone buying page currently advertises potential carrier-related credits of $830–$1,100, depending on the promotion and qualification. That is not a standard Apple Trade In payout for every device. It is promotional carrier credit and may require a specific plan, financing arrangement, line, or port-in. Apple Trade In online versus in-store

Online process
- Open Apple’s Trade In tool.
- Select the category, manufacturer, model, and configuration.
- Answer the condition questions accurately.
- Review the estimate and choose purchase credit or another available Apple-credit option.
- Back up, transfer, sign out, disable account locks, and erase the old device.
- Follow Apple’s shipping instructions and keep tracking records.
- Wait for inspection and review the final credit or any revised offer.
Apple generally says the mailed device should arrive within 14 days after the new device is received. Ship promptly rather than treating the full period as preparation time.
In-store process
Bring the device to an Apple Store and ask a Specialist to evaluate it. Complete your data transfer, account removal, and erase steps before surrendering it. An in-store route avoids shipping uncertainty and is useful when the device is visibly damaged or you need a decision that day, but it does not guarantee the online estimate.

Prepare the old device without losing data
Do not erase or hand over the old device until the replacement has been transferred and tested. Confirm that you can access photos, messages, contacts, password managers, authenticator apps, banking apps, and two-factor authentication. If the old phone handles cellular service, transfer the eSIM and confirm calls, texts, and mobile data work on the new device.
Pre-trade checklist
- Back up the device. Use iCloud or a computer backup, as appropriate.
- Transfer your data. Verify important content on the new device rather than assuming the transfer completed.
- Protect account access. Move authenticator credentials and recovery methods before erasing the old phone.
- Sign out of your Apple Account where applicable.
- Turn off Find My and Activation Lock.
- Remove a physical SIM card. An eSIM should be transferred or removed through the carrier process.
- Remove personal accessories. Do not send cases, chargers, or other items unless Apple specifically requests them.
- Erase all content and settings.
- Photograph the device and its serial number or IMEI. Keep the images with your trade-in records.
- Package and ship with tracking or complete the handover at an Apple Store.
Apple’s preparation guidance is available through Apple Support. On a recent iPhone, the relevant paths are generally Settings → [your name] → Find My → Find My iPhone to disable Find My, followed by Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Labels can vary by iOS version, so check the current Apple Support wording if your menus differ.

These are separate issues:
- Activation Lock: The device must no longer be linked to your Apple Account. A device left in Activation Lock cannot be properly reused by the recipient.
- Carrier lock: This concerns which mobile networks can use the device. Do not assume that carrier-locked devices receive the same treatment as unlocked devices; check Apple’s estimator and terms.
- Outstanding financing: Trading in a phone does not automatically cancel an installment balance, lease, or other carrier obligation. Check the financing provider before surrendering the device.
- Corporate or school management: A device enrolled in Mobile Device Management may need to be released by the organization before it can be transferred.
A phone can be paid off but still Activation-Locked, or unlocked but still subject to an outstanding financing balance. Check each status separately.
What happens after Apple receives the device?
Apple or its trade-in partner compares the device with the information used for the estimate. If the condition matches, Apple processes the expected credit. If the device is worth less than estimated, Apple may send a revised offer. You can accept or reject a lower revised value; if you accept, the difference may be charged or credited through the payment method used for the purchase, according to the transaction terms.
Keep photos of the condition, shipping receipt, tracking number, and trade-in reference. These records do not guarantee a dispute outcome, but they make it easier to explain what you shipped. If tracking shows delivery but the trade-in does not update, use Apple’s trade-in status tools and contact Apple Support. If you reject a revised value, confirm the return process and deadline for that specific transaction.

Packaging matters
Follow Apple’s supplied packaging instructions when a kit is provided. Apple’s trade-in page says mailed whole units should be surrounded by at least 2.5 inches of suitable filler material inside a corrugated box. The device should not be able to move freely during shipping.

Apple versus a carrier promotion
Carrier promotions can provide more total credit than Apple’s ordinary trade-in offer, but they commonly deliver that value as monthly bill credits over 24 or 36 months. A “free phone” usually means the phone’s installment price is offset over time if you maintain the qualifying service and satisfy every condition.
Before choosing a carrier deal, compare:
- The required plan cost and how it compares with the plan you would otherwise buy
- Whether you need a new line or must port in a number
- Activation or connection charges and taxes due upfront
- The installment term and credit schedule
- Whether the phone remains carrier-locked
- What happens if you cancel, change plans, transfer a line, or leave the carrier
- Whether paying off the phone early stops future credits
- Whether an existing promotional credit is forfeited
For example, Verizon describes promotional savings as monthly bill credits, and some offers can require the traded device to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. T-Mobile promotion terms in the research snapshot use 24 monthly credits and may require qualifying credit, specific plans, a new line, or a port-in. T-Mobile also warns that credits can stop if the account is canceled and that a remaining device balance may become due. A carrier deal may be financially superior if you already have the qualifying plan and expect to remain for the full term. It may be worse if you would choose a more expensive plan solely for the phone promotion or may switch carriers soon.
Apple versus selling privately
A private sale can produce more cash, especially for a recent unlocked iPhone or Mac in excellent condition. But compare net value, not the listing price:

Net private-sale value = sale price − platform fees − shipping − insurance − expected hassle and dispute risk
Private selling requires accurate photos and descriptions, buyer communication, payment and fraud precautions, shipping, and possible returns or disputes. Consider marketplaces such as eBay or Swappa, but check current fees and completed-sale prices rather than relying on asking prices.
Use a private sale when the expected premium over Apple is large enough to justify the work and risk. Apple is often reasonable for lower-value devices, damaged hardware, or anyone who values a simple transaction over maximum cash.

Worked decision examples
Recent unlocked iPhone in excellent condition
Check Apple’s live estimate, a cash-sale marketplace, and current carrier offers. If a private sale nets substantially more after fees and shipping, selling may be worthwhile. If the difference is small, Apple’s convenience and lower buyer-dispute exposure may justify accepting less.
Older iPhone with cracked glass
Run the exact condition through Apple’s estimator rather than assuming “cracked” means a fixed discount. Compare the result with repair costs and a private-sale price. A repair is only sensible if the expected increase in resale value exceeds the repair bill and risk.
Mac with high resale value
A Mac can justify a private-sale comparison because configuration and condition may create a larger price difference. Record the exact chip, memory, storage, and display size. If you prefer Apple credit and want to avoid shipping or buyer disputes, Apple may still be the better practical choice.
Apple Watch with modest value
When the expected difference between Apple credit and a private sale is small, Apple’s simpler process or free recycling may be preferable. Remove personal data and cellular details before handover.
Android phone exchanged for an iPhone
Apple accepts selected Samsung and Google smartphones, but not every model qualifies. Use the estimator with the exact manufacturer, model, storage, and condition. Prepare the Android phone by backing it up, removing accounts and personal data, and taking out a physical SIM.
Carrier offer with a larger headline credit
Suppose a carrier offers a larger total credit than Apple but requires a 36-month installment and a more expensive plan. Calculate the extra service cost for the full term, plus activation fees and the value of lost flexibility. The larger advertised credit is not automatically the larger saving.

Final Apple Trade In checklist
- Identify the exact model, storage, connectivity, serial number, and IMEI.
- Check Apple’s current estimator close to purchase.
- Compare at least one carrier, Best Buy, or cash-sale alternative.
- Calculate net value, including fees, shipping, plan costs, and financing obligations.
- Back up and transfer data.
- Verify photos, messages, authentication, and eSIM access on the new device.
- Turn off Find My and remove Activation Lock.
- Sign out, remove the SIM, and erase all content and settings.
- Photograph the device and retain its identifying numbers.
- Package securely, ship with tracking, and keep the receipt.
- Monitor the trade-in status and respond promptly to any revised offer.
