Tyco Electronics Ltd. changed its name to TE Connectivity Ltd. in 2011. The company announced the change on March 10, 2011, after shareholders approved it at the annual general meeting. The NYSE ticker symbol, TEL, was announced as unchanged. For customers, investors, and engineers, this was primarily a corporate name and branding transition—not the launch of an unrelated replacement company.
What happened to Tyco Electronics?
Tyco Electronics became TE Connectivity Ltd. The company’s March 10, 2011 announcement said shareholders had approved the new name and that Swiss regulatory approval was still required. The company expected that approval by March 25, 2011.
The change affected the corporate name and public brand. It did not present Tyco Electronics’ connectivity-products business as a merger with an unrelated company, a new stock listing, or a discontinued product operation. Current TE Connectivity documentation is therefore the natural place to begin when researching a component formerly marked or documented as Tyco Electronics.
That said, a 2011 announcement should not be used by itself to establish the exact legal effective date or every detail of the company’s later corporate structure. It confirms the shareholder approval and the expected regulatory process; a precise legal completion date would require a later filing or official registry record.

Why did Tyco Electronics change its name?
The company said the name TE Connectivity better reflected the products and solutions it provided. It also said the new identity was intended to increase awareness among prospective customers, suppliers, investors, job candidates, and the communities where it operated.
In the announcement, the company described a business making more than 500,000 products used to connect and protect power and data. Its examples ranged from smartphones and satellites to automobiles, aircraft, appliances, and data centers. Those figures and descriptions were company-reported statements from 2011, not current operating statistics.
Was TE Connectivity a completely new company?
Not in the ordinary customer or investor sense. The event was described as a shareholder-approved change to the company’s name and brand. It was not described as a new company taking over an unrelated Tyco Electronics operation.

The safest practical explanation is that Tyco Electronics changed its corporate identity to TE Connectivity. The name change did not mean that customers suddenly had to treat every existing product, supplier relationship, or technical document as belonging to a different manufacturer.
However, corporate-name continuity and product equivalence are separate questions. A current TE Connectivity part is not automatically interchangeable with every older Tyco Electronics part merely because the names are connected. Engineers and procurement teams still need to verify the complete part number, specifications, revision, and lifecycle status.

Ticker continuity is useful historical context, but it does not by itself prove every legal detail of a company’s later reorganizations, domicile, listing status, or ownership. Those current investment facts require up-to-date company and market research rather than inference from a 2011 release.
What happened to Tyco Electronics products and datasheets?
Many older components, documents, packages, and distributor records may still show the Tyco Electronics name. A later document for the same product family may instead use TE Connectivity branding. Some legacy PDFs may retain an old logo, copyright line, or historical manufacturer reference even when the product is being searched through TE Connectivity.
DigiKey explains that Tyco Electronics products continued to be stocked under the TE Connectivity name after the March 2011 transition. That supports practical naming continuity, but it does not mean that every historical part remains available or that every old part has a current substitute.

Individual product families and acquired brands may also retain separate names. “Tyco” alone is therefore an unreliable search term because it can return unrelated Tyco businesses and product lines. Use the exact manufacturer part number whenever possible.
How to identify an older Tyco Electronics part
- Record the complete marking. Include prefixes, suffixes, date codes, lot codes, package markings, and any revision identifier. A single suffix can affect plating, contact arrangement, voltage rating, or packaging.
- Search the exact part number on TE Connectivity’s website. Start with the manufacturer’s product and documentation search.
- Search under both names. Try the exact number with “Tyco Electronics” and again with “TE Connectivity.” Historical documents and distributor catalog records may use different names.
- Compare the technical documents. Check the datasheet revision and date, dimensions, mounting method, terminal or contact arrangement, electrical ratings, materials, plating, tolerances, temperature range, and termination method.
- Check lifecycle status. Determine whether the part is active, obsolete, end-of-life, not recommended for new design, or replaced by another part.
- Confirm the supply source. Use TE Connectivity documentation and an authorized distributor where possible. Verify traceability, date codes, packaging, compliance documents, and return or counterfeit-screening policies.
- Approve substitutes by specification—not by name. A newer TE-branded part may be a replacement, but the company-name transition alone does not establish electrical, mechanical, environmental, or regulatory equivalence.
Common mistakes to avoid
An old Tyco label is not automatically counterfeit
A Tyco Electronics label may simply indicate older inventory, packaging produced before the rebrand, a legacy document, or a component manufactured during the transition. Authenticity still requires ordinary supply-chain checks, but the old company name alone is not proof of a counterfeit.
TE Connectivity is not automatically a drop-in replacement
The connection between the corporate names does not establish that every TE Connectivity part is identical to every older Tyco Electronics part. Confirm the exact part number and all specifications before approving a replacement.
Distributor stock is not proof of current manufacture
A distributor may be selling older inventory, a cataloged but unavailable item, or a separately identified substitute. Stock status should not be confused with current manufacturer production or lifecycle status.
Do not confuse Tyco Electronics with every Tyco business
Tyco Electronics was the electronics-components business discussed in the 2011 announcement. It should not be treated as a generic name for Tyco International, ADT, Tyco Fire & Security, or every other business that used the Tyco name.
What did the business make?
The 2011 announcement positioned the company across connectivity and electronics applications, including consumer electronics, energy, healthcare, automotive, aerospace, and communication networks. It referred to products such as connectors, sensors, terminals, relays, cable and network components, and related solutions.
These categories are useful for understanding the historical business behind the rebrand. They are not a current segmentation chart, and the announcement’s figures—more than 500,000 products, nearly 100,000 employees, and $12.1 billion in revenue—should be labeled as 2011 company-reported figures rather than presented as current facts.
What the name change means for investors
For someone reconciling an old press release, financial record, or market reference, the key point is that “Tyco Electronics Ltd.” and “TE Connectivity Ltd.” refer to the same broad publicly traded electronics-components business across this naming transition, while the historical ticker was TEL.
Do not use the 2011 announcement alone to answer a current investment question such as the company’s present revenue, employee count, domicile, listing details, ownership, or corporate structure. Those facts can change and must be checked against current filings and investor-relations materials.

If an old component says Tyco Electronics, begin by treating that name as a legacy reference to TE Connectivity, not as an automatic warning sign. Search the full part number through TE Connectivity and authorized distribution channels, then verify the technical specification and lifecycle status.
The corporate name change explains why both names appear in catalogs and datasheets. It does not by itself prove that a visually similar current part is an approved substitute, that every legacy product is still made, or that a distributor listing reflects current production.
