If Upwork Time Tracker is not working, first fully quit and reopen the Upwork Desktop App. Upwork says restarting can load updates from its servers. Do not choose Clear cache and restart as an early fix: it can delete preferences, saved credentials, settings, and unuploaded cached time, and the action cannot be undone.
The Time Tracker normally runs through the Upwork Desktop App, not directly in a browser. The right solution depends on whether the app is missing the tracker, showing the wrong account, refusing to start, working offline, failing to upload hours, or producing blank screenshots.
Before troubleshooting: protect your tracked time
Before uninstalling the app, deleting data, or changing security settings:

- Check whether the app says offline, uploading, or indicates that time is cached.
- Keep using the original computer if time is waiting to upload. Do not start tracking from another computer while cached time is pending.
- Do not select Clear cache and restart unless Upwork Support specifically tells you to.
Upwork says cached data may contain unuploaded work time. Clearing it can permanently remove that data. If cached time is not uploaded before the Work Diary locks, Upwork says it cannot be recovered manually.

Quick fixes that solve many tracker problems
- Fully quit and reopen the app. Closing the visible window may not be enough; quit the application completely and launch it again.
- Confirm you are using the freelancer profile. A client profile may show Messages but not the Time Tracker or freelancer contracts.
- Check the contract type. Time Tracker is primarily for hourly contracts. Fixed-price tracking, where available, is for recordkeeping and does not provide the same hourly protection.
- Sign in to Upwork in a browser. This can refresh the account session used by the desktop app.
- Clear only Upwork-related cookies if the timer will not start, following Upwork’s cookie-clearing instructions. Do not indiscriminately delete all browser data.
- Restart the desktop app again and test the correct hourly contract.
Fixes by symptom
The Time Tracker does not appear
The browser is not the normal location for Upwork’s hourly timer. Install or open the Upwork Desktop App for Windows, macOS, or Linux, subject to Upwork’s current compatibility requirements.
If the app opens but there is no tracker, sign out and verify the profile:
- Right-click the Upwork tray icon.
- Choose Settings, then Sign out.
- Quit the application.
- Open Upwork in a browser and switch to the freelancer profile.
- Reopen the app and choose Log in to Upwork.
- Approve the browser handoff if prompted.
If only Messages appears, being logged into a client account is a likely explanation—not necessarily a damaged installation.

Upwork documents a Google sign-in workaround for some desktop-app login problems:
- Open your Upwork account settings in a browser.
- Go to Profile Settings → Connected services.
- Disconnect Sign in with Google.
- Reopen the desktop app.
- Log in with your Upwork username instead of the Google sign-in flow.
This is a documented workaround, not a universal explanation for every login failure. Contact Upwork Support if it fails.
Your contract is missing
Check that:
- You are signed into the correct Upwork account and freelancer profile.
- The contract is active and has not been ended or changed by the client.
- The contract is hourly if you expect protected hourly tracking.
- The browser and desktop app are using the same account.
- You restarted the app after switching profiles.
A fixed-price contract may not behave like an hourly contract. Even when the app permits tracking for recordkeeping, that time does not function as an Hourly Payment Protection claim.

The timer will not start
Use Upwork’s documented sequence:
- Close the Upwork Desktop App.
- Sign into Upwork in an internet browser.
- Clear Upwork-related cookies using Upwork’s instructions.
- Restart the desktop app.
- Try the contract again.
If the timer still refuses to start, submit an in-app report rather than repeatedly clicking the control or immediately clearing the app cache.

Possible causes include a poor connection, firewall or proxy restrictions, insufficient administrator privileges, low disk space, an incorrect system clock, or antivirus blocking the installer.
- Check that the computer’s date, time, and time zone are correct.
- Try a stable network.
- Confirm that there is enough disk space.
- Run the installer with the permissions required by your operating system.
- On a corporate network, ask the system administrator to review firewall, VPN, or proxy rules.
- Verify that the installer came from Upwork’s official download page.
Some antivirus products may flag the app because it captures and transmits screenshots. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection. Instead, verify the source, consult the security administrator, and use a narrowly scoped allowlist rule only when appropriate.
The app will not open
Duplicate or outdated installations can interfere with the current application. Quit Upwork, then check for remaining processes in Task Manager on Windows, Activity Monitor on macOS, or the relevant process manager on Linux. End leftover Upwork processes, remove duplicate or old installations using Upwork’s current operating-system instructions, and reinstall from the official download page.
Upwork’s newer troubleshooting page references build 5.8.0.33 in its documentation. Treat that as a version-specific reference, not a permanently current version. Check Upwork’s live download page for the current build.
The tracker says offline or hours are missing
The desktop app can cache time during some connection problems or brief maintenance periods. Upwork says cached time should upload after connectivity returns. Its troubleshooting material describes a cache capacity of up to 24 hours for the latest version documented there; this is not a timeless guarantee.

Recover pending time safely:
- Restore a stable internet connection.
- Keep the original computer available.
- Reopen the app.
- Wait for the cache to upload.
- Do not clear the cache.
- Do not track from a second computer while the cache is pending.
- Check the Work Diary after upload.
- Contact Support quickly if uploading does not complete.
Upwork says maintenance-related caching may normally reconnect within about an hour, while an unstable connection may upload within several minutes after it stabilizes. These are typical expectations, not guarantees. Cached time should be uploaded before the weekly billing cycle closes. If the Work Diary locks first, Upwork says the time cannot be manually recovered.
The timer runs but screenshots are blank
Separate these situations:
- The timer never starts.
- The timer runs but no screenshots appear.
- Screenshots upload but are blank.
- Screenshots appear locally but are absent from the Work Diary.
Possible causes include missing macOS screen-recording permission, antivirus or endpoint-security interference, an outdated or duplicate installation, a protected window, the wrong display being captured, or a temporary app failure.
On macOS, revisit the system privacy permissions for screen recording and, where applicable, camera or webcam access. Security prompts may return after an update or reinstall, so recheck permissions for the current Upwork app version. Use Upwork’s current troubleshooting guidance for the exact menu labels for your macOS release.

Upwork’s download material says screenshots are taken randomly approximately six times per hour. The app’s screenshot and Work Diary functions are part of Upwork’s hourly-tracking workflow; an independent timer does not reproduce them.

Upwork supports desktop-app installations on Windows, macOS, and Linux subject to current operating-system requirements. Chromebook workarounds through Linux may exist, but Upwork warns that necessary tracking features may not work. Chromebook support is therefore not equivalent to a supported Windows, Mac, or Linux installation.
Remote desktops, virtual machines, corporate VPNs, proxies, endpoint-security tools, and locked-down macOS devices can also block login, screenshots, network access, or installation. In these environments, involve the administrator rather than weakening security controls yourself.

Reinstall the app safely
Reinstallation is appropriate for a corrupted or duplicate installation. It will not fix an ended contract, the wrong profile, an Upwork-side outage, or a blocked corporate network.
- First check for offline or cached time.
- Quit the app and end remaining Upwork processes.
- Do not clear the app cache if it may contain unuploaded time.
- Uninstall duplicate or outdated versions using Upwork’s current Windows, macOS, or Linux instructions.
- Download the current installer from Upwork.
- Install with the required permissions.
- Recheck macOS privacy permissions after installation.
- Sign in to the freelancer profile and verify the contract list.
What if you already missed time?
First check whether the time is merely waiting in the app cache. Restore connectivity and allow the original device to upload. Then review the Work Diary and contact Support promptly with the incident details.
If the time was never recorded and the client agrees, manual time may be an emergency fallback. Record the exact dates, start and end times, and work performed, and keep a contemporaneous log. However, Upwork’s manual-time guidance makes the important limitation clear: manual time is not eligible for Hourly Payment Protection.
Do not recreate hours after the fact without reliable records, assume the client has approved manual time, or use manual time while cached tracker data may still upload normally. External tools such as Toggl, Clockify, TimeCamp, and Harvest can preserve a private backup record, but they do not automatically create Upwork Work Diary entries or Upwork protection.
How to report the problem to Upwork
In the desktop app:
- Select your name in the lower-left corner.
- Select Support and Feedback.
- Describe the issue.
- Select Send.
Include:
- The exact incident date and time, including time zone.
- Contract ID.
- Operating system and version.
- Upwork Desktop App version.
- Whether the app opens and whether the timer starts.
- Whether the Work Diary updates.
- Whether the app shows offline or cached mode.
- The exact error text.
- Safe, relevant screenshots or screen recordings.
- Whether the problem affects one contract or every contract.
This evidence helps distinguish an account issue from an installation, permission, network, or service problem.
Can another time-tracking app replace Upwork?
No—not for Upwork’s official hourly workflow. A third-party app can be useful as a private backup, for non-Upwork clients, or for invoicing, but it does not automatically provide Upwork screenshots, Work Diary records, or Hourly Payment Protection.

Choose an alternative based on offline support, automatic tracking, privacy, reports, exports, platform compatibility, invoicing, and client agreement. Recheck vendor pricing and feature limits before subscribing because they change.
