The RAM-price problem was real, but the headline is broader than Tim Sweeney’s actual warning. On November 24, 2025, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said that “RAM price increases will be a real problem for high-end gaming for several years.” He was warning about the cost and availability of powerful gaming PCs—not predicting that games would stop working or that gaming as a whole would be disrupted for a fixed period.
For buyers, the practical risk is straightforward: expensive memory could raise the cost of new enthusiast PCs, make 64GB and 128GB upgrades harder to justify, and encourage more people to keep existing systems longer.
What Tim Sweeney actually said
Sweeney made the comment in response to a consumer reporting a sharp increase in the price of a DDR5 memory kit. As reported by Tom’s Hardware, his statement was:

Sweeney attributed the pressure to memory manufacturers diverting leading-edge DRAM capacity toward artificial-intelligence demand, where data-center customers could pay more aggressively than consumer-device manufacturers.
That was an industry warning posted in a consumer discussion, not a formal Epic Games hardware forecast. Sweeney did not provide a production model, an end date, or evidence that every gaming system would face the same increase.
Was the RAM-price increase real?
Contemporary retail reporting showed substantial volatility. One example cited by Tom’s Hardware was a Crucial Pro DDR5-6000 64GB kit that rose from about $260 in mid-October 2025 to $498 roughly a month later. Other reports described some DDR5 products as more than doubling, while TweakTown cited increases exceeding 500% in selected cases.

Those figures demonstrate how quickly particular products can move; they are not an average price for every 32GB or 64GB kit. RAM prices vary by:
- DDR4 or DDR5 generation;
- capacity and number of modules;
- speed and timings;
- RGB and other premium features;
- seller, region, inventory, and date; and
- whether the comparison uses a sale price, list price, or actual transaction price.
A shortage can increase manufacturer and distributor prices, but retail prices can also be amplified by limited inventory, reseller speculation, sellers repricing around replacement costs, and temporary stockouts. Rapid price movement alone does not prove that a named retailer engaged in illegal price gouging.

For a meaningful comparison, buyers should compare the same capacity, DDR generation, module count, speed, timings, warranty, and seller type.
How AI demand can affect gaming memory
The simplified version is that “AI is taking your RAM.” The real mechanism is more indirect.

AI data centers use enormous quantities of memory, particularly high-bandwidth memory, server-class DRAM, and related packaging and testing capacity. These products are not identical to the DDR4 or DDR5 modules installed in a desktop PC. However, they are part of a connected memory-manufacturing ecosystem.
Memory manufacturers have limited fabrication, packaging, testing, and investment capacity. If data-center customers are willing to pay more and sign large contracts, manufacturers have an incentive to prioritize higher-margin products and secure capacity for those customers. That can leave consumer memory more exposed to tighter supply and price swings, even when AI hardware is not directly buying retail gaming DIMMs.
AI demand is therefore a significant explanation supplied by Sweeney and repeated in contemporary coverage, but it is not necessarily the only factor. Normal memory-market cycles, production decisions, inventory levels, exchange rates, product mix, and retail behavior can all contribute.

Related price pressure on SSDs should also be interpreted carefully. SSDs use NAND flash rather than DRAM. The markets can be influenced by overlapping technology-sector conditions, but they are not the same product or supply chain.
Who is most exposed?
Sweeney specifically referred to high-end gaming, not every gamer. The most exposed buyers are likely to be:
- enthusiast PC builders choosing 64GB or more;
- people moving from 16GB or 32GB to 64GB or 128GB;
- workstation-and-gaming users;
- streamers, creators, heavy modders, and people running virtual machines;
- buyers using local AI tools alongside games; and
- prebuilt manufacturers and small system integrators that must absorb or pass on memory costs.
Manufacturers may respond by raising prices, reducing margins, changing standard configurations, or offering fewer premium memory options. PC Guide reported that some vendors experimented with selling systems without RAM so customers could supply their own. That is an edge-case response, not a universal industry standard.
Who may not notice much?
The immediate impact can be limited for:
- existing systems that already have enough RAM;
- mainstream gaming PCs with 16GB or 32GB;
- console owners;
- buyers who can postpone a discretionary upgrade; and
- gamers whose performance is limited by their GPU rather than system memory.
More RAM does not automatically produce higher frame rates. Insufficient memory can cause stuttering, paging to storage, long load times, or application closures. Moving from 16GB to 32GB can help in some modern games and multitasking situations. Moving from 32GB to 64GB is often more valuable for creation work, extensive browser use, large mods, virtual machines, or local AI than for ordinary gaming frame rates.
Faster memory can help in CPU-limited situations, but it may provide little benefit when the graphics card is the bottleneck. A standard-speed, larger-capacity kit can therefore be better value than an expensive RGB kit with marginally tighter timings.

Could higher RAM prices change game development?
Higher memory prices do not automatically force developers to raise or lower a game’s system requirements. A game can run perfectly on a PC whose owner simply cannot justify upgrading it.
The more plausible effects are economic and gradual:
- slower migration to newer PCs;
- pressure to support older hardware for longer;
- more scrutiny of memory use and asset streaming;
- fewer players upgrading to recommended specifications; and
- greater commercial risk for games aimed only at high-end PCs.
Developers may respond by optimizing memory use, delaying hardware-dependent features, or prioritizing consoles and mainstream PC configurations. None of those outcomes is established by Sweeney’s comment. The strongest defensible interpretation is that memory costs could make high-end PC ownership less affordable—not that gaming availability itself will be interrupted.

New memory-fabrication capacity requires substantial capital and time. If AI and server demand remain strong, manufacturers may continue prioritizing those products. That gives Sweeney’s warning a credible supply-chain rationale.
But memory is also a cyclical market. Prices can fall sharply when production catches up, demand weakens, or manufacturers rebalance output. AI investment could slow, consumer demand could soften, new capacity could come online, or older DDR4 inventory could become cheaper even while DDR5 remains expensive.

Large PC manufacturers may also have supplier agreements or existing inventory that cushions their customers from spot-market prices. Retail pricing can normalize faster than contract or chip-level pricing, or it can remain elevated for reasons that differ from the original shortage.
“Several years” should therefore be treated as Sweeney’s informed estimate, not an independently verified timetable. The available reporting supports genuine price pressure and a plausible AI-capacity explanation, but it does not establish that elevated consumer RAM prices will remain continuously high through a specific year.
Should you buy RAM now or wait?
The right decision depends more on need and price than on the headline.

- your current system is unstable, failing, or clearly running out of memory;
- your workload genuinely requires more capacity;
- you find a normally priced, compatible kit; or
- a complete PC has discounted older inventory that offsets the memory premium.
Consider waiting when:
- the upgrade is discretionary;
- your current 32GB system performs adequately;
- the desired kit is a premium RGB or extreme-speed model with an unusually large markup; or
- you can comfortably use your existing PC for several more months.
Waiting could save money, but there is no guarantee that prices will fall soon. Buying during a spike may lock in an inflated price; waiting may instead bring higher prices or stock shortages. Check compatibility before buying
A cheap kit is not a bargain if it is incompatible or unstable. Confirm all of the following:
- Generation: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable.
- Form factor: desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs are different.
- Platform limits: check the motherboard and CPU specifications for supported capacity and speeds.
- Module layout: two modules are often easier to run at their rated speed than four, depending on the platform.
- Matched kits: mixing unrelated kits can cause instability even when the specifications look identical.
- Profiles: XMP or EXPO settings may require BIOS configuration and are not necessarily the platform’s official guaranteed speed.
- Return policy: used or marketplace memory should have testing, return protection, and a reputable seller.
Use the motherboard manufacturer’s supported-memory list where available, and verify laptop upgradeability before purchasing. Tools from Crucial and Kingston can reduce compatibility mistakes, but no automated filter guarantees that an overclocked memory profile will be stable.
The personal-finance takeaway
RAM inflation matters most when it changes the total cost of a major PC purchase. Buyers should compare the complete system—not just the memory line item. A prebuilt with older inventory may offer better value than buying a CPU, motherboard, graphics card, and overpriced RAM separately. Conversely, a vendor-installed upgrade may cost far more than a compatible kit bought independently.
When comparing those options, include warranty terms, installation support, return policies, and the risk of buying incompatible hardware. Do not pay for 64GB or 128GB solely because a news headline sounds alarming. Buy the capacity your games and applications actually need, and avoid a premium speed or lighting package unless it provides value for your workload.
