eBay does not have one permanent symbol key for every page, device, category, or marketplace. A heart may save an item, a badge may identify an eBay program, and a label such as “Buy It Now” may determine how you purchase. The symbol itself is only a shortcut: the listing’s price, condition, shipping, delivery, returns, and payment terms control the transaction.
This guide applies primarily to eBay.com in the United States, with information checked against eBay guidance on August 18, 2026. The app and desktop site may display different icons or labels.
Quick guide to common eBay symbols

Symbols that control what you do
Heart: Watchlist
The heart is eBay’s Watchlist control. Selecting it saves an item so you can monitor it without buying. eBay’s current help information says buyers can add up to 1,000 items to a Watchlist, although older guides may show a different limit. Depending on notification settings, eBay may alert you about an auction ending soon or other activity.

Watching does not reserve the item. Another buyer can purchase it, and other bidders can raise the price. The heart also does not tell the seller that you intend to buy or mean that an offer has been accepted. See eBay’s Watchlist guidance.

Cart, bell, message, bookmark, share, and report icons
These are generally navigation or interface controls rather than promises about the listing:
- Cart: adds an item to the cart or takes you toward checkout, depending on the page.
- Bell: opens notifications or alerts.
- Message bubble: opens messages or seller communication.
- Bookmark or saved-search control: saves a search or related preference.
- Share: provides sharing options for a listing.
- Flag or report: reports a listing, account, or possible policy concern.
Exact graphics and placement can change between the eBay app, mobile browser, and desktop site. If an icon is unfamiliar, tap or hover over it, or search eBay Help using the exact visible label.
Symbols that describe how you can buy
Auction
An auction label or clock symbol means buyers place bids instead of purchasing at a single fixed price. The highest qualifying bidder generally wins when the auction ends, subject to eBay’s rules and any reserve price. In most categories, a bid is binding, so winning generally creates an obligation to complete the purchase.

The final amount can be affected by bidding activity, a reserve price, shipping, taxes, and other listing terms. Check the current bid, number of bids, end time, shipping cost, and checkout estimate rather than assuming the displayed bid is the amount you will pay.

Buy It Now
Buy It Now means the seller has set a fixed price and you can purchase immediately, subject to availability and payment completion. It is different from waiting for an auction to end.
On some auction listings, the Buy It Now option can disappear after bidding begins. Exceptions may apply, including certain reserve-price listings and categories. The button can also appear as part of the purchase flow; in either case, confirm the final price, shipping, taxes, and payment details before submitting the order. Make Offer or Best Offer
A Make Offer or Best Offer symbol means the seller is willing to consider a buyer-proposed price. The seller may accept, decline, or counter. Some listings use minimum offer amounts or automatic acceptance and rejection rules that are not obvious from the icon.

An accepted offer is not the same as a paid, completed transaction. Follow the payment instructions promptly, because the item is not secured in the same way as a completed checkout until the purchase process is finished. Best Offer is not available on every listing, category, or format. It may be unavailable on some auction listings with Buy It Now, and relevant offers or counteroffers may be automatically declined once bidding begins. Trust, advertising, and protection badges
Blue checkmark: Authenticity Guarantee
An Authenticity Guarantee badge identifies an item covered by eBay’s authentication program. On eBay.com, coverage can include eligible shoes, handbags and accessories, watches, apparel, jewelry, and trading cards, but eligibility depends on category, item type, value, location, and current program rules.
For an eligible purchase, the seller sends the item to an authentication facility rather than directly to you. An authenticator checks whether it is genuine and consistent with the listing. If it cannot be authenticated or is materially inconsistent, it may not be forwarded and you may receive a refund under the applicable process.
The checkmark does not mean the item was authenticated before purchase. It also does not replace reviewing photos, size, condition, included accessories, and returns. Some authenticated purchases may be final sale, and eBay Money Back Guarantee exclusions can apply. Confirm the program details on the listing and eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee page.
Top Rated Plus seal
Top Rated Plus is a listing-level benefit for qualifying sellers and listings. On eBay.com, qualifying listings generally offer same- or one-business-day handling and a 30-day or longer free domestic return policy, subject to category and location rules.
The seal does not mean the product is authentic, the seller is risk-free, delivery is guaranteed by a particular date, or every item sold by that seller has identical terms. It also does not automatically mean every return will be free. Read the specific listing’s handling time, shipping service, return policy, and exclusions. See eBay’s seller standards guidance.
Promoted
Promoted means the seller has paid for or participated in advertising placement. Promoted listings may appear higher in results that match a buyer’s query or interests. The label is advertising, not an authenticity certification, safety review, recommendation, or guarantee of a better price.
Compare the full cost, condition, seller record, shipping, returns, and estimated delivery with non-promoted results. eBay describes promoted results and search filters in its search guidance.

eBay Money Back Guarantee
Money Back Guarantee is a buyer-protection policy and dispute-resolution framework for eligible transactions. It may apply when an item does not arrive or does not match the listing, subject to policy requirements and exclusions. It does not mean every dispute is automatically decided for the buyer.
Do not confuse the three concepts:
- Money Back Guarantee: a policy that may provide a remedy for eligible transaction problems.
- Authenticity Guarantee: an authentication process for eligible categories and items.
- Seller protection: protections that may apply to sellers under specific conditions.
Review eBay’s Money Back Guarantee policy for coverage and exclusions.
Condition, shipping, delivery, and returns labels
New, used, refurbished, and non-working
Condition labels are category-specific. Common choices include New, New without tags or packaging, Used, Seller Refurbished, Certified Refurbished, Excellent/Very Good/Good—Refurbished, and For parts or not working.

Seller Refurbished generally means the seller or a third party restored the item to working order. Certified Refurbished generally describes a product refurbished under eBay’s stated category requirements, often with a like-new presentation. Neither label automatically supplies a manufacturer warranty unless the listing or applicable program expressly says so.
For parts or not working means the item is not fully operational, may need repair, or may lack essential components. A “Used” item can have different expectations in electronics, clothing, collectibles, and other categories. Read the condition explanation, description, photos, accessories, warranty language, and returns. eBay’s listing guidance explains available condition fields.
Shipping and delivery symbols
Icons or labels may refer to free shipping, an estimated delivery range, expedited shipping, local pickup, international shipping, eBay International Shipping, or tracking after purchase. The graphic alone is not enough to determine your actual cost or delivery promise.
Before paying, check:
- Shipping price and destination;
- Handling time and estimated delivery range;
- Seller location and shipping service;
- Taxes, import charges, and customs responsibilities;
- Whether eBay International Shipping or another program is involved;
- Whether local pickup is actually available for your location.
Use eBay’s free-shipping and item-location filters as a starting point, not as a substitute for reading the individual listing.

A returns symbol or “Free returns” label indicates that the listing includes a stated return policy. “Free returns” often means the seller pays return shipping under the applicable policy, but the exact conditions matter. The result may depend on the reason for the return, the return window, the item’s condition, exclusions, and whether the item is final sale.

Top Rated Plus listings have specific return requirements, while ordinary listings can use different policies. Read the listing’s returns section instead of treating “free shipping” and “free returns” as interchangeable.

Feedback scores, star ratings, detailed seller ratings, and Top Rated status provide different types of seller information. Star ratings can cover item-description accuracy, communication, shipping cost, and delivery time. A “verified purchase” indicator generally means the feedback is associated with a purchase completed on eBay.
A strong feedback score is useful context, but it does not prove that a particular listing is accurate or that the seller has no problematic items. Check recent negative and neutral feedback, comments about similar products, the seller’s return policy, handling time, location, and any listing-specific program badge. eBay also advises buyers to use seller information and beware of scams in its buying-safety guidance.
What eBay symbols do not guarantee
Do not treat any single icon as a complete safety check. A symbol by itself does not guarantee that:
- the product is genuine;
- the seller is trustworthy;
- the item is new;
- shipping is free;
- delivery will occur by a particular date;
- returns are available for every reason;
- you will win a dispute;
- the listing is the best price;
- the item is reserved for watchers; or
- the seller’s other listings have the same protections.
How to verify an unfamiliar symbol before buying
- Open the complete listing. Do not rely only on a search-result card.
- Tap or hover over the badge. Look for explanatory text or a link to an eBay program.
- Read the transaction sections. Check Condition, Shipping, Delivery, Returns, Payment, and the total at checkout.
- Identify the buying format. Confirm whether it is an auction, fixed-price listing, or Best Offer listing.
- Check seller information. Review recent feedback, similar-item experience, handling time, and location.
- Save evidence. If a badge appears in search but disappears on the listing page, or if terms conflict, capture the listing and use the current listing page and checkout terms as the practical authority.
When the symbol or listing does not behave as expected
- If the heart does not save the item, sign in and check My eBay → Watching.
- If Make Offer is missing, the listing, category, or format may not support offers.
- If an authenticity claim appears only inside a seller-uploaded image or description, do not assume it is an official eBay badge. Verify it on the listing and through eBay Help.
- If “free shipping” conflicts with the checkout total, use the shipping section and final checkout total, and contact eBay before paying if necessary.
- If the app and desktop site show different symbols, the difference may reflect device, marketplace, account, responsive design, or a test version.
The safest rule is simple: interpret the icon, then verify the terms. eBay’s interface changes, but the listing details determine what you are actually agreeing to buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the heart mean someone bought the item?
No. It means the item was added to a Watchlist. It does not show that the item sold, was reserved, or has a particular number of buyers.
Does Authenticity Guarantee mean the item has already been verified?
No. For eligible purchases, authentication generally occurs after purchase and before the item is forwarded to the buyer.

Can I buy an auction item immediately?
Only if the listing currently offers Buy It Now. That option can disappear after bidding begins, although exceptions may apply.
What happens when a seller accepts my offer?
Acceptance does not necessarily mean payment is complete. Follow eBay’s payment instructions and review the final transaction details.
Does free shipping include returns?
Not automatically. Shipping to you and return shipping are separate terms; read the listing’s return policy.

Why do symbols look different in the eBay app?
eBay’s interface can vary by device, app version, marketplace, account, category, and testing. The labels and listing details matter more than the graphic.
Are all badges shown in a seller’s image official eBay badges?
No. Sellers can place text or graphics in listing photos and descriptions. Verify official badges in the eBay interface or linked program information.
What should I do if a symbol conflicts with the listing details?
Treat the current listing terms and checkout total as decisive, save a screenshot, and contact eBay before completing the purchase if the conflict remains.
