Yes, the $170 AirPods Pro 2 deal was real—but it was a historical post-Prime-Day promotion from October 2025, not a price you should assume is still available. The latest available listings show AirPods Pro 2 prices varying by seller and condition, while Apple now sells the newer AirPods Pro 3 for $249. A $170 AirPods Pro 2 listing can still be worthwhile, but only after checking whether it is new, refurbished, USB-C, and backed by a reliable return policy.
What the original $170 deal was
The headline referred to Amazon’s October 2025 Prime Day event and appears to have been published on October 9, 2025, immediately afterward. Related coverage described AirPods Pro 2 as still available for roughly $170 after the event. See the contemporaneous references from Prime Day deal coverage and the Lifehacker feed archive.
That was a retailer promotion, not Apple’s standard price. The surviving evidence does not establish whether the $170 figure required Prime membership, included a coupon, applied to new or refurbished stock, or covered a particular charging-case version. It also does not confirm tax or shipping costs.

Is AirPods Pro 2 still $170?
Not as a verified, generally available new-retail price. Apple’s current store flow points shoppers to AirPods Pro 3, listed at $249. Best Buy’s current product page shows AirPods Pro 2 at $234 from a marketplace seller, with new and refurbished marketplace offers displayed from $157.99 to $239.99. Those prices can change and may differ by seller, condition, warranty, shipping, and return terms.

In other words, a price near $170 may still appear, but it should be treated as a specific marketplace or refurbished offer—not as the continuing Prime Day price. Check the Apple store page and Best Buy listing for current availability before buying.
There are two AirPods Pro 2 versions
“Second-generation AirPods Pro” can mean either the 2022 Lightning model or the 2023 USB-C model. The charging connector is the clearest practical difference, but the USB-C version also has a higher dust-resistance rating.

Apple’s technical details are available for the Lightning model and USB-C model. If a listing simply says “AirPods Pro 2,” do not assume which case it includes.

The USB-C AirPods Pro 2 use Apple’s H2 headphone chip and include active noise cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Apple also lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection features, subject to compatible Apple hardware, current software and firmware, and regional availability.

The Lightning version offers largely similar core audio features and the same stated battery maximums, but has an IPX4 rating and a Lightning case. “Up to six hours” is a controlled-test maximum; volume, listening modes, spatial audio, settings, environment, and battery age affect actual results.
What you give up versus AirPods Pro 3
Apple’s current AirPods Pro 3 cost $249. Apple highlights heart-rate sensing during workouts, up to eight hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation, and five ear-tip sizes. That makes Pro 3 the better choice for shoppers who want current hardware, newer fitness features, or the longest claimed ANC runtime.

But Pro 3 is not automatically the better financial decision. At a trustworthy $170 price, AirPods Pro 2 cost $79 less than Pro 3 while retaining the main Pro features many buyers want. Apple does not include a USB-C charging cable with AirPods Pro 3, according to its current store information.
AirPods Pro 2 versus AirPods 4 with ANC
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are listed by Apple at $179—only $9 above the historical $170 Pro 2 deal. They include ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Personalized Spatial Audio, and a USB-C wireless charging case.

AirPods 4 use an open-style fit rather than silicone ear tips. They are therefore a better match for people who dislike sealed in-ear earbuds, while AirPods Pro 2 are usually the more logical choice for buyers who want a secure seal, stronger isolation, and Apple’s listed hearing features. Apple lists up to five hours per charge for AirPods 4, or four hours with ANC enabled.
When $170 is a good price
- Excellent: New, sealed USB-C AirPods Pro 2 from a reputable retailer with a clear warranty and normal returns.
- Potentially fair: New marketplace stock from a well-established seller, with the USB-C case explicitly identified.
- Use caution: Refurbished or open-box stock without a battery-health policy, seller warranty, or meaningful return window.
- Poor value: A Lightning model priced close to comparable USB-C stock, unless you specifically want to use existing Lightning accessories.
Buying checklist
- Confirm whether the item is new, open-box, refurbished, or used.
- Confirm USB-C versus Lightning in the specifications or model details.
- Identify the actual seller; a retailer product page may contain third-party marketplace offers.
- Review the return period, warranty, and battery-health policy.
- Check that ear tips, charging cable, and other advertised accessories are included.
- Calculate the final price after tax and shipping.
- Be cautious of unusually low prices, counterfeit goods, tampered packaging, and sellers with limited history.
Important limitations
Neither AirPods Pro 2 version is waterproof. IP54 and IPX4 ratings do not make the earbuds suitable for swimming or submersion. Water resistance can decline with normal wear, and Apple says not to charge wet AirPods.
The hearing functions are not universal medical replacements. Apple says they require compatible devices, supported software, current firmware, and regional authorization; Hearing Aid is intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Availability varies by location.
Who should buy them?
Buy AirPods Pro 2 near $170 if you use Apple devices, want ANC and a sealed in-ear fit, and find a trustworthy new USB-C listing with a substantial discount. The product is older, but it is not functionally obsolete.
Choose AirPods 4 with ANC if you prefer an open fit and want to stay near $180. Pay for AirPods Pro 3 if you want Apple’s current Pro model, heart-rate sensing, longer claimed ANC battery life, and the newest feature set. Android users should also compare non-Apple earbuds, since many AirPods-specific conveniences depend on Apple hardware.
