People are buying VR and XR devices—but “the XR market” is splitting into very different products and customers. Gamers and enthusiasts remain the clearest buyers of immersive headsets; businesses buy specific training and design workflows; and the consumer growth story is shifting toward glasses for cameras, audio, AI, and portable screens. That means rising XR shipments do not necessarily mean a mass revival of traditional VR.

First, “XR” does not mean one kind of device

Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term, not a synonym for VR. The distinctions matter because a person buying a camera-equipped pair of glasses is solving a different problem from someone buying a headset for a flight simulator.

  • VR headsets block out the room and immerse the user in a virtual environment. Their clearest consumer audience is gamers and enthusiasts.
  • Mixed-reality (MR) or spatial-computing headsets use cameras to show the real room alongside digital content. They are used for games, 3D visualization, and experimental productivity.
  • Display glasses put a large virtual screen in front of the wearer, usually using a connected phone, laptop, handheld console, or accessory. They are closer to a portable private monitor than a self-contained computer.
  • AI smart glasses look more like ordinary eyewear and add features such as cameras, microphones, speakers, calls, and an assistant. Most do not provide a floating visual display.
  • True AR glasses aim to place digital objects over a see-through view of the world. In 2026, this remains a more specialized category.

Market trackers may group several of these devices under XR. Their shipment totals should not be read as a count of people adopting immersive VR.

What the market numbers say—and do not say

IDC reported that global XR device shipments grew 44.4% in 2025, while Meta Quest shipments fell 42.3%. IDC attributed much of the overall growth to smart glasses, not a broad resurgence in conventional VR. In the first quarter of 2026, IDC reported about 2.25 million smart-glasses shipments worldwide, up 167% year over year, with Meta holding 69.2% of that market. These are IDC shipment estimates; they measure products shipped, not active users, daily use, retention, or satisfaction.

That growth sits alongside evidence of a softer headset market: Counterpoint reported that global VR headset shipments fell 12% in 2024, while demand in some enterprise segments—including location-based entertainment, education, healthcare, and military applications—was more resilient. The periods and categories differ, so the figures are not directly interchangeable. Together, they point to a market changing shape rather than one simple verdict that “XR is booming” or “VR is dead.”

Who buys conventional VR headsets?

Gamers

Gaming is still the easiest consumer reason to buy an immersive headset. Players seek experiences that a television does not offer: rhythm games, first-person adventures, flight and racing simulators, social VR, fitness games, PC VR, or console-specific titles. Many buyers do not need a grand theory about the metaverse; they see a headset as another gaming platform or peripheral.

A loyal gaming audience can sustain a product category without making it a household essential. Multiplayer also creates a network effect: a game is more compelling when friends own compatible devices, but a buyer may have fewer people to play with if the installed audience is limited. Content availability and continued developer support therefore matter alongside headset specifications.

Enthusiasts and technical early adopters

Some buyers enjoy the hardware itself: comparing lenses and tracking, building a PC VR setup, experimenting with mods, or trying new simulation and social applications. They may tolerate setup steps, physical discomfort, and uneven software because experimentation is part of the appeal. They are also unusually visible in online discussions, so their enthusiasm should not be mistaken for broad household adoption.

Families and occasional users

A standalone headset may be bought as a holiday gift, a shared entertainment device, a party novelty, or a way to try fitness and games. The more useful question is not just whether a household bought one, but whether anyone still uses it after the first burst of curiosity. Sharing can be complicated by fit, hygiene, account setup, prescription needs, and the practical question of who gets the device. A lower price helps, but it cannot create compelling content or erase setup friction.

Who pays for premium spatial computing?

Apple Vision Pro illustrates a narrower, higher-price audience. Apple’s U.S. material lists the M5 model from $3,499. That price puts it outside the casual-gaming or typical shared-family-device budget before optional accessories or vision-related needs are considered. Apple says glasses wearers may need ZEISS Optical Inserts rather than wearing ordinary glasses inside the headset; buyers should check the current purchase and prescription requirements.

Likely buyers include Apple enthusiasts, developers building for visionOS, creative professionals exploring 3D content or virtual workspaces, and businesses testing visualization, training, or customer demonstrations. Apple has said that more than half of Fortune 100 companies have purchased Vision Pro for organizational and customer-facing experiments. That is an Apple statement, not an independently verified measure of how many devices were bought, how widely they are deployed, or whether they produced a return on investment. A premium device can have a real professional market without becoming a mass-market consumer product.

Why businesses buy XR

Enterprise customers usually are not buying a headset for its own sake. They are evaluating a workflow: whether a simulation, visualization, or remote-assistance system can do a job more safely, consistently, or economically than the existing method.

  • Training and simulation: Manufacturers, utilities, aviation, logistics, construction, emergency response, and defense organizations may use simulations to rehearse dangerous or expensive scenarios before a worker encounters them. The business case is strongest when training quality, safety, consistency, or travel costs can be measured.
  • Design and engineering: Teams can inspect the scale and spatial relationships of a building, factory, vehicle interior, aircraft, or industrial prototype before committing to physical changes. This can justify a costly deployment when a real-world prototype or design mistake is more expensive.
  • Field service and remote assistance: A worker may view hands-free instructions or share a first-person view with a remote specialist. Connectivity, battery life, safety rules, privacy, glare, and worker acceptance can make or break the setup.
  • Healthcare and education: Possible applications include anatomy instruction, simulation, rehabilitation, visualization, and selected therapies. A demonstration or pilot is not the same as routine purchasing across hospitals or schools. Classroom deployments also require device management, cleaning, supervision, accessibility, and content licensing.
  • Location-based entertainment: Arcades, museums, theme parks, and dedicated venues can reuse equipment across paying visitors, provide staff assistance, and manage cleaning centrally. This is a venue-services business—not proof that households want to wear headsets every day.

Enterprise purchasing can be hard to see in consumer sales data. Devices may arrive through a systems integrator, training vendor, custom software firm, government contract, or equipment supplier. A shipment might support a small pilot rather than a scaled rollout. Ask what task is being improved, how success is measured, and whether an ordinary display, simulator, tablet, or video call would do the job for less.

Who buys display glasses?

Display glasses have a relatively straightforward pitch: a private, portable large screen. Travelers may want a film without holding a phone; handheld-console owners may want a bigger image; laptop users may want another screen in a cramped space. Unlike a VR headset, the device does not necessarily require the user to enter a virtual world.

For a U.S. price reference, XREAL listed the One at $399 and the One Pro at $599 in its online store when the dossier was compiled. Prices, bundles, and availability can change; check the XREAL One listing and One Pro listing for current terms. These products are not automatically complete computers. Before buying, verify that the exact phone, laptop, or handheld supports the required USB-C video output; check whether an adapter or compute accessory is needed; and confirm prescription options, spatial features, charging behavior, and compatibility. A product that works with one model or configuration may not work with another.

Who buys camera-and-AI smart glasses?

Many smart-glasses buyers may not think of themselves as buying XR at all. They want a camera for hands-free photos or first-person video, open-ear audio, calls, quick access to an assistant, or a familiar-looking pair of glasses for everyday wear. Content creators and people seeking hands-free or accessibility assistance may also find those functions useful. Ray-Ban Meta is a prominent example of the category; it is not a substitute for a headset if the goal is immersive gaming or a persistent visual overlay.

Glasses can be easier to incorporate into ordinary life because they are used in short bursts, keep the wearer socially present, and offer familiar functions rather than requiring a dedicated session. That helps explain why smart glasses can grow while immersive headset demand stays specialized. It does not prove that the products have smartphone-scale adoption or durable daily use.

There is a real trust trade-off: a camera on someone’s face raises questions about recording consent and social norms. Buyers should consider recording indicators, where photos or recordings are stored, whether processing depends on cloud services, how the phone connection works, and what happens when the battery or AI assistant fails. AI answers can also be wrong. Schools, workplaces, healthcare settings, and private venues may restrict cameras or recording regardless of the device’s features.

Why some buyers stop using headsets

A headset can be worth owning for a weekly simulator, a private film, a design review, or a training session without being comfortable or useful enough for daily wear. Common obstacles include motion sickness, eye strain, heat, weight, facial pressure, short battery life, difficult cleaning, limited room to move, and social awkwardness. Putting a device on, adjusting it, finding an application, and taking it off adds friction to even a good experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use can also fade when a buyer runs out of appealing software, friends do not own the same platform, an update disrupts compatibility, or accessories cost more than expected. Prescription inserts and fit are practical issues, not minor footnotes. A headset may succeed at a specific job and still fail as a general-purpose computer. Shipment totals alone cannot tell you whether owners keep using their devices.

How to decide if an XR device is worth your money

  1. Name the recurring job. Is it immersive gaming, a private screen, hands-free audio and capture, 3D work, or training? If you cannot name a use you expect to repeat, novelty may be doing too much of the selling.
  2. Choose immersion or convenience. Games and simulated environments point toward a VR/MR headset. Portable viewing points toward display glasses. Camera, audio, and assistant features point toward smart glasses.
  3. Check what you already own. Consider your gaming PC, phone, laptop, handheld, console, and platform accounts. Verify the exact device and adapter requirements before purchasing display glasses or planning a tethered setup.
  4. Test physical fit and tolerance. Weight, heat, facial pressure, motion sickness, eye strain, and prescription support can matter more than a headline resolution figure. If possible, try the device before committing.
  5. Budget for the whole setup. Include adapters, prescription inserts, protective or charging accessories, software, and any required compute device. Do not assume a listed base price is the final cost of a usable system.
  6. Consider the fallback. A display-glasses buyer may still use the product as a screen even if spatial features disappoint. A VR headset depends more heavily on a platform’s games and applications. For smart glasses, consider whether camera and audio functions remain worthwhile if the assistant is limited.

For a business, add a pilot with measurable criteria: training time, errors, travel avoided, safety outcomes, or service resolution. Include device management, cleaning, privacy, offline use, replacement logistics, and staff acceptance. Compare the result with the existing method before expanding.

The short answer

Gamers buy immersion; enthusiasts buy experimentation; professionals and developers buy a chance to work with spatial content; enterprises buy narrowly defined training, design, or service workflows; and travelers and handheld gamers buy portable screens. The broadest consumer opportunity may lie in glasses that add useful camera, audio, AI, or display functions to familiar routines. That is a shift in what people buy—not proof that everyone is about to buy a VR headset.
