The Acer Chromebook 315 and the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook are the two sub-$200 Chromebooks worth watching—but only at the right price and with the right configuration. The Acer is the better large-screen bargain. The Lenovo is the better portable choice, provided its listing has a modern Intel processor, adequate storage, and a support period that makes sense.
Prices below are promotional snapshots observed in August 2026, not permanent prices. Before paying, verify the exact model number, hardware, seller, condition, return policy, and ChromeOS support date.

Buy the Acer if screen size and storage matter most. Buy the Lenovo if you want a smaller laptop and can confirm that the discounted listing is not a weak 32GB or outdated configuration. If neither listing passes the checklist below, waiting or increasing the budget to roughly $250–$350 is usually wiser than settling for obsolete hardware.
What “worth buying” means at this price
A $200 Chromebook should be judged as a basic ChromeOS computer, not as a bargain Windows laptop. It should handle web browsing, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, email, school portals, YouTube, streaming video, video calls, and light Android-app use without turning every ordinary task into a frustration.

At this budget, look for a 1080p display, at least 64GB of storage—with 128GB preferable—and a processor new enough to provide reasonable everyday performance and a useful ChromeOS support period. A reputable seller, clear condition grading, a return window, and a warranty matter almost as much as the specifications.
Do not expect serious photo or video editing, large spreadsheets, professional creative software, desktop Windows applications, modern local PC gaming, or dozens of open tabs while video calls and Android apps run simultaneously. Four gigabytes of RAM can be adequate for light use, but it is a compromise, not a selling point.
Best large-screen bargain: Acer Chromebook 315
The strongest verified sub-$200 configuration is the Acer Chromebook 315 listing at Walmart: an Intel Processor N50, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of eMMC storage, ChromeOS, and a 15.6-inch 1920×1080 display. The observed price was $199 in August 2026.

Why it makes the cut
- The screen is unusually generous. A 15.6-inch Full HD panel gives documents, spreadsheets, split-screen work, and video more room than the 11.6-inch displays common in this price class.
- 128GB is useful breathing room. It is substantially more practical than a 32GB Chromebook and less likely to require constant storage management.
- It suits desk-based use. The larger chassis makes sense as a home computer, homework machine, or secondary laptop that mostly stays in one place.
The N50 is an entry-level processor, so “good enough” is the appropriate expectation. Browsing, schoolwork, streaming, and ordinary Google Workspace use should fit the product’s role. Many tabs, simultaneous video calls, Android apps, or heavier web applications can produce pauses, especially with only 4GB of RAM.
The 128GB drive is eMMC rather than an SSD. That is normal at this price, but eMMC storage is generally slower than SSD-class storage. The Walmart listing advertises up to 14.5 hours of battery life; treat that as a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed result. Brightness, Wi-Fi, video playback, applications, and battery condition all affect runtime.

- Students who want a large screen for documents and online classes
- Home users focused on browsing, email, streaming, and Google Workspace
- Buyers who want 128GB storage for the lowest possible price
- Anyone who values screen area more than portability
Who should skip it
- Frequent travelers who want a light, compact laptop
- Heavy multitaskers who should seek 8GB of RAM
- People who need Windows, macOS, Adobe desktop software, or specialized business applications
- Buyers expecting premium speakers, a premium display, or SSD-class performance
Do not confuse this listing with every other Chromebook 315. Acer sells older versions under the same family name, including a CB315-3H configuration with a Celeron N4020, 4GB RAM, 128GB flash storage, and a 15.6-inch Full HD display. Acer’s page lists that older model as out of stock and shows a $329.99 list price. The model family name alone does not identify the hardware.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook is the better alternative for students and buyers who prefer a smaller footprint. Tom’s Guide reported an August 2026 Best Buy sale at $199, while independent testing from RTINGS identifies the IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 as a strong budget choice for light productivity, browsing, streaming, and student use.

There is one important qualification: Lenovo sells multiple IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook configurations. Do not buy solely because the product title says “IdeaPad Slim 3.” Read the processor, memory, storage, display resolution, seller, and model number in the specific listing.
The configuration hierarchy
Prefer an Intel N200 over older Celeron hardware when prices are similar. An N100 is also reasonable for basic ChromeOS work. An 8GB model is strongly preferable, although 4GB can be acceptable for modest browsing, Docs, email, and streaming. Choose 128GB over 32GB, and favor a 14-inch 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 screen over 1366×768 when the prices are close.
RTINGS warns that N100 and N200 versions are designed for light workloads and are substantially slower than the Core i3-N305 configuration. That does not make them bad $200 choices; it means they should not be described as fast or suitable for demanding work. A Core i3-N305 model under $200 would be a particularly attractive sale, open-box, or refurbished find, assuming its support period and condition are sound.

- Students who carry a laptop between home, school, and libraries
- Buyers who prefer portability to a 15.6-inch screen
- People whose workload is mainly browsing, school portals, Google Workspace, streaming, and video calls

How to choose between the two
- Choose the Acer Chromebook 315 for its 15.6-inch Full HD display and 128GB storage. It is the more comfortable desk computer.
- Choose the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 for a more portable student-friendly form factor, but only after confirming the discounted configuration.
- Choose neither if the listing has 32GB storage, 2GB RAM, an old processor, an unclear seller, a short remaining support period, or a price that depends on a store card, membership, trade-in, or undisclosed coupon.
The under-$200 Chromebook checklist
- Find the exact model number. Product families contain materially different hardware.
- Check the processor. Prefer Core i3-N305, N200, or N100 when available. Treat N50 as basic-use hardware, and be cautious with older Celeron N4020, N4120, or N4500 systems.
- Check RAM. Four gigabytes works for light use; 8GB is better for video calls, many tabs, and longer-term comfort.
- Check storage. Avoid 32GB unless nearly everything will stay in the cloud. Target 128GB. Remember that eMMC is not equivalent to an SSD.
- Check resolution. Prefer 1920×1080 or 1920×1200. Do not assume a large screen is a high-resolution screen.
- Check ChromeOS support. Use Google’s Auto Update policy and device lookup. Search for the exact manufacturer and model, then compare the Auto Update Expiration date with how long you expect to keep the laptop.
- Check condition and seller. Confirm whether it is new, open-box, refurbished, or seller-refurbished, and identify who sells and fulfills the order.
- Check the return policy and warranty. These are especially important for marketplace, clearance, and refurbished stock.
- Check the real price. Make sure $199 does not require a membership, store card, coupon, subscription, or trade-in.
Important edge cases
Microsoft Office and Windows software
A Chromebook is not a Windows replacement if you need full desktop Microsoft Office, Adobe desktop applications, specialized school or business programs, local Windows utilities, or certain engineering, accounting, or development tools. Web versions and Android apps may work, but verify compatibility with the specific application before buying.

Offline work
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can support offline work after offline access is enabled. Set that up before losing connectivity. Lenovo notes that offline-enabled Google apps can work without an internet connection, while the fullest feature set and most convenient experience generally require internet access.
Gaming
These are suitable for browser games and may handle some Android or cloud gaming, depending on the title and connection. They are not good choices for modern local PC gaming. Cloud gaming also requires a reliable connection and, in many cases, a subscription.
Touchscreens and convertibles
Do not assume either recommendation is a touchscreen or 2-in-1. Chromebook families often include both clamshell and convertible versions. The exact listing must say so.

A refurbished Chromebook can provide better hardware for $200, but require a clearly stated grade, return window, warranty, exact model number, and—if available—battery-health information. Confirm that it is not enterprise-enrolled and that it has a sufficiently long Auto Update period. A faster used Chromebook with expired or nearly expired support can be a worse financial decision than a slower new model.

Conditional alternatives
The ASUS Chromebook CX15 is worth considering only when a verified listing drops below $200. PCWorld reviewed it at $159, but the prices shown in its current coverage were $269.88 at Amazon and $338 at Walmart, so it should not be treated as a reliably available sub-$200 recommendation.
Another sensible fallback is a refurbished Chromebook Plus model with 8GB RAM, at least 128GB storage, a modern processor, and substantial remaining ChromeOS support. If neither featured deal meets those conditions, saving for the $250–$350 range can buy a meaningful improvement in memory, processor performance, display, or build quality.
Final verdict
The Acer Chromebook 315 is the best large-screen bargain when the N50/4GB/128GB/15.6-inch Full HD configuration is $199 or less. Its limitations are clear: modest performance, 4GB RAM, eMMC storage, and poor portability.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook is the best portable value at $199 or less when the exact listing has a modern N100 or N200 processor, sufficient storage, a usable display, and a healthy support window. Because Lenovo sells several materially different versions, the configuration—not the product name—determines whether it is actually a good deal.
