In the March 2025 U.S. pricing documents, Starlink’s consumer plans ranged from $15 to $195 per month—but the monthly fee was only part of the bill. A Standard Kit was listed at $549, before shipping, tax, accessories, or installation. That put the documented first-year subtotal at about $1,737 for Residential Lite and $2,217 for Residential, before those extra costs. These are dated U.S. figures, not a promise of today’s price: Starlink prices and availability can vary by address and change over time.
Use the March 2025 figures below as a historical U.S. snapshot. Starlink’s current plan pages may show different names, prices, and offers. Before ordering, enter your service address on Starlink’s U.S. site and check the terms and total at checkout.

These prices come from Starlink’s March 2025 Residential Lite, Residential, and Roam Critical Information Summaries. They are not a nationwide guarantee: plan eligibility, prices, and network capacity can differ by service address and market.

The real cost: equipment, first month, and first year
The March 2025 summaries listed a $549 purchase price for the Standard Kit. The Roam summary also listed a $599 Mini Kit option. The Standard Kit is the usual hardware basis for the estimates below; Roam’s Mini option changes the upfront equipment cost. A basic self-install uses the supplied kit, but the right mount, cable route, or a professional installer may add expense.

First-year estimate = kit + 12 monthly plan charges + shipping, tax, accessories, and installation. The table shows only the kit and service charges, using the $549 Standard Kit and the monthly prices documented in March 2025.

These are calculations, not quoted Starlink totals. The March summaries gave minimum totals for hardware plus the initial service charge, but excluded shipping; taxes and optional setup costs can raise the bill. On that basis, the listed minimum was $648 for Residential Lite and $688 for Residential. For Roam with the Standard Kit, it was $564 for 5 GB, $629 for 50 GB, and $744 for Unlimited. The Mini Kit increased the listed Roam minimums to $614, $679, and $794, respectively. Each figure was before shipping.
Budget separately for any required mount, longer cable run, Ethernet or power accessory, or installer. Electricity is also an ongoing cost. If the dish’s location requires roof work, a pole, grounding, or difficult cable routing, get an installation estimate before deciding that the advertised monthly charge fits your budget.
Residential Lite or Residential?
Both fixed-home plans were documented as unlimited, but they were not equivalent. Residential Lite cost $40 less per month in the March 2025 snapshot and had lower priority during congestion. That can mean weaker performance when many users are online, often the same busy periods when households stream or work in the evening.

Starlink documented expected speeds for Lite of 45–350 Mbps down, 10–20 Mbps up, and 25–60 ms latency. For Residential, the documented expected ranges were 150–350 Mbps down, 20–40 Mbps up, and 25–60 ms latency. These are expectations, not guarantees. Network load, obstructions, weather, power, equipment, and installation conditions can affect performance.
- Consider Lite if it is offered at your address, household demand is moderate, and saving $40 per month matters more than consistent peak-time performance.
- Consider Residential if Starlink will be your main connection, multiple people use it at once, or peak-hour slowdowns would disrupt work or household use.
- Compare carefully if connectivity supports business-critical work. A higher-priority plan does not make service uninterrupted or turn expected speeds into a guarantee.
What Roam’s data allowances mean in practice
Roam is priced for mobile use, not simply as a cheaper substitute for fixed home service. The $15 5 GB tier is best treated as a safety net for messaging, email, maps, and occasional browsing—not a normal streaming or full-time work plan. Five gigabytes can be used quickly by video calls, streaming, app updates, cloud backups, or large downloads.
The $80 50 GB tier can suit trips with intermittent work if you control data use. Video meetings, operating-system updates, cloud synchronization, and streaming can consume the allowance faster than expected. Monitor usage and disable automatic backups or large updates when appropriate. The $195 Unlimited tier is more plausible for frequent travel or mobile work where dependable alternatives are unavailable, but its premium over Residential is substantial.

Starlink’s support materials describe post-allowance behavior that may include lower-speed access on some plans, but that should not be read back as the exact U.S. policy in March 2025. Check the applicable plan terms before buying. Roam support information also describes countrywide coverage, in-motion use, waterways and marinas, and pausing and resuming through Standby Mode, subject to plan, hardware, location, and terms. International, coastal, and in-motion restrictions deserve particular attention.

Performance: streaming, calls, gaming, and remote work
Starlink can be a major upgrade over slow or unavailable rural broadband, but no advertised speed guarantees a particular experience. Residential service may support streaming, video calls, and many online games when the installation and network conditions are favorable. Satellite latency is generally more suitable for interactive uses than traditional geostationary satellite service, but it can vary; fiber and often cable remain more predictable for latency and consistency.
- Streaming: Usually feasible on a suitable connection, but simultaneous streams increase demand and Roam allowances can be consumed rapidly.
- Video calls: Latency may be workable, but obstructions, weather, congestion, and brief interruptions can affect calls.
- Gaming: Many games may be playable, but performance is less predictable than fiber or cable and depends on network conditions.
- Remote work: Often valuable where alternatives are poor. If a missed connection affects income, test the location and consider a backup connection.
- Backups and cameras: Continuous cloud synchronization or security-camera uploads can use substantial data, making limited Roam plans a poor fit.
For business or remote-site service, the March 2025 Priority summary listed plans at $176 per month for 40 GB, $374 for 1 TB, and $748 for 2 TB of priority data, with additional priority data at $0.74 per GB. These are a separate, much more expensive category—not an ordinary home-plan upgrade to buy without checking the actual need. See the Priority Critical Information Summary for its dated terms.
Installation can decide whether Starlink is worth paying for
A clear view of the sky is a practical prerequisite. Trees, roofs, terrain, or other obstructions can interrupt service; a spot that looks open from the ground may still need a different mount or a higher location. Before ordering, use Starlink’s obstruction-check guidance and assess where the dish can be safely placed.
Potential extra costs or complications include a custom roof or pole mount, long cable runs, roof access, local restrictions on exterior work, grounding or electrical issues, cable damage, and extra networking equipment for outbuildings or large homes. A clear dish view also does not guarantee strong Wi-Fi in every room. Mesh or other network equipment may help, but is not automatically necessary.

Starlink equipment needs power, so a household with frequent outages may also need backup power. Weather and environmental conditions can affect performance; no connection should be treated as immune to heavy weather or site-specific problems.

- Rural household without usable wired broadband: Residential may be worthwhile if the monthly charge and upfront kit cost buy a substantial improvement over the available connection. Lite is a lower-cost option if its congestion trade-off is acceptable.
- Home with slow DSL or weak fixed wireless: Compare actual evening speeds and reliability, not just plan names. Include the kit and installation in the Starlink comparison.
- Home with fiber or cable: Those services are often cheaper and offer lower latency where available. Starlink may still make sense for a particular location or as a deliberate backup, but do not assume it is the better value.
- RV owner or frequent traveler: Roam may justify its cost through mobility. Choose based on time away from fixed service and realistic data use; the cheapest tier is not a full-featured internet substitute.
- Full-time remote worker: Residential can be attractive in an underserved area. For income-critical connectivity, factor in a backup option and the consequences of interruptions.
- Boater or maritime user: Verify the exact plan, hardware, coverage area, and in-motion or offshore rules. Do not infer that every Roam feature works everywhere.
- Small business or remote worksite: Compare the cost of consumer service with the need for priority data, support, and operational reliability. Priority plans can add substantial monthly and usage costs.
Compare the alternatives at your address
Starlink is not automatically cheaper or faster than local broadband. Use availability checkers and quoted prices for your exact location:
- Fiber: Often the strongest option for speed, latency, and consistency when available.
- Cable: Frequently offers lower latency and a lower total cost in served areas.
- Fixed wireless or 5G home internet: Can be cheaper and easier to install, but signal, tower capacity, and congestion matter.
- Cellular hotspot: Often practical for light mobile use where coverage is strong; less suitable for remote dead zones or sustained high-volume use.
- Geostationary satellite: May be available where other services are not, but commonly has higher latency and plan-specific data limits.
Compare total cost over the period you expect to use the service: monthly charges, equipment, installation, taxes, data or overage fees, and the cost of a backup connection. Provider prices and offers vary by location, so a nationwide headline comparison can mislead.
Billing, pausing, and cancellation
The March 2025 summaries described a one-month minimum term, no early termination fee, and monthly fees paid in advance that were generally nonrefundable once charged. They also said service began on the earlier of activation or 30 days after shipment. Check current terms before ordering, because billing conditions can change. Roam documentation describes Standby Mode for pausing and resuming service, but its availability and cost should be confirmed in the account and market where the service is used.
How to check your actual price before ordering
- Enter the service address on Starlink’s official U.S. page and review the plans offered there.
- Confirm the monthly charge, data terms, priority level, and any mobility restrictions for the specific plan.
- Check the kit price and whether purchase or another equipment arrangement is offered; distinguish Standard from Mini hardware where relevant.
- Review shipping, taxes, promotions, accessories, and any installation quote in the order flow.
- Check the dish location for obstructions and plan for cable routing, power, and indoor Wi-Fi coverage.
- Read the current billing, pause, cancellation, and return terms before committing.
Starlink’s service-plans page and its personal plans page may display later prices or different plan structures than the March 2025 U.S. summaries. Use those pages and the address-specific checkout for current decisions; do not treat this 2025 snapshot as a current quote.
