The Iran conflict is more likely to raise risks and costs for data centers than to cause an immediate U.S. power crisis. Its most direct energy effects are on oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), shipping and fuel supplies around the Persian Gulf. For U.S. facilities, any electricity-price impact is more indirect: overseas LNG shortages can make U.S. gas more valuable to exporters, while local grid constraints and data-center demand determine whether that pressure reaches power bills. The timing and size of the effect depend on how long disruptions last, where a facility is located and what its power contracts cover.

For households, the conflict does not translate automatically into higher electricity bills. Fuel costs, utility infrastructure spending and the allocation of costs for new large loads all matter—and they differ by region.

What the conflict disrupts first

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for energy exports from the Gulf. In 2025, about one-quarter of global seaborne oil trade and more than 110 billion cubic meters of LNG passed through it, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). About 93% of Qatar’s and 96% of the United Arab Emirates’ LNG exports used the strait that year. Those are annual route-dependence figures, not estimates of current daily traffic or current lost supply.

Disruption can affect energy markets through several channels at once: tanker traffic and shipping insurance, production shut-ins, threats or damage to export and energy infrastructure, and delays while cargoes are rerouted. Pipelines and other routes can help move some oil, but they are not equivalent alternatives for all the volumes that would otherwise pass through Hormuz—particularly LNG from Qatar and the UAE. Governments can release strategic stocks, and consumers or businesses can cut demand in response to high prices, but neither measure instantly replaces disrupted export capacity.

The timeline matters. The IEA described the strait as effectively closed in its May 28, 2026 assessment of the energy crisis. It later reported that prices eased after an interim U.S.-Iran agreement and rose again when hostilities resumed in July. Conditions have changed over time; “closed” should not be treated as a permanent description. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s June 9, 2026 outlook estimated that Middle Eastern producers had cut output by more than 11 million barrels a day relative to pre-conflict levels and forecast Brent crude averaging $105 a barrel in June and July. That was a dated estimate and forecast, not a current-price quote.

Why oil and gas have different effects on U.S. power

Oil prices are globally connected, so a Gulf disruption can quickly affect crude and fuel markets. Higher oil prices can raise the cost of diesel used in backup generators, construction transport and equipment delivery. They can also contribute to inflation and make materials, shipping and project financing more expensive. But most U.S. electricity is not priced as a direct mark-up on crude oil. A rise in oil prices does not mean U.S. power prices will rise by the same percentage.

Natural gas is a more direct link. Gas-fired power plants often set the marginal wholesale electricity price in U.S. markets, so higher gas costs can lift power prices where those plants are price-setting. Even then, the relationship is not one-for-one: market design, other generators, transmission limits, weather, contracts and local fuel availability all affect the result.

The United States has substantial domestic gas production and regional gas markets, which generally offer more insulation from an overseas supply shock than import-dependent markets in Europe or Japan. But the country is also a major LNG exporter. If European and Asian buyers compete for replacement cargoes after Gulf exports are disrupted, U.S. LNG may become more valuable abroad. Exporters may have an incentive to send more gas overseas, within the limits of liquefaction capacity, contracts, infrastructure and regulatory approvals. That can tighten domestic supply and raise U.S. gas prices over time.

This is a possible, time-dependent channel—not a guaranteed outcome. The size of the effect depends on how long the disruption lasts, U.S. storage and production, export capacity and utilization, pipeline bottlenecks, weather and demand response. The expert commentary in the March 10, 2026 Verge report described a likely lag: oil-market effects can appear within weeks, while LNG competition may take months to feed through to U.S. gas and power costs.

How higher energy costs reach a data center

A data center’s exposure is not simply its electricity consumption multiplied by a headline power price. The outcome depends on how it buys power, where it connects and who bears charges for capacity, transmission and congestion.

  • Electricity: A facility exposed to wholesale prices can face higher operating costs when gas-fired generation becomes more expensive. A fixed-price contract or long-term power-purchase agreement may buffer spot-market swings, but the protection depends on contract duration, coverage and counterparty performance. Prices can still reset at renewal, and capacity, transmission, ancillary-service or demand charges may be separate.
  • Backup power: Diesel and natural gas can cost more during a fuel shock, as can delivery and maintenance. Backup systems are designed primarily for emergencies; if grid outages last longer, running them more often means higher fuel use, emissions and operating expense. Onsite gas generation reduces some reliance on grid power but creates exposure to gas prices and pipeline reliability.
  • Construction and financing: Fuel and shipping costs can affect delivery of steel, concrete, transformers, generators and cooling equipment. The IEA has warned that conflict-related uncertainty can raise long-term financing costs for capital-intensive energy projects. That does not establish a particular cost increase for every data-center project, but it adds uncertainty to investment decisions.
  • Firm power and cooling: A site needs power that is dependable enough to run computing and cooling systems, not merely access to energy at an acceptable average price. A shortage of firm capacity, or a delayed interconnection, can be more disruptive than a moderate rise in the energy price.

Why the shock arrives amid rising data-center demand

The conflict is an added risk to a grid that is already adjusting to fast-growing electricity demand. The IEA estimates that global data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025. It also says U.S. developers are increasingly considering onsite gas generation as they face slow grid connections. That demand does not make every market equally tight, but it can magnify the impact of a fuel shock in places where transmission is constrained and gas-fired plants frequently set the power price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The IEA says reliable onsite gas-fired electricity for data centers can require 30% to 70% more generation infrastructure than average demand alone would suggest, reflecting the need to serve critical, variable loads reliably. Gas turbines and related equipment can also be difficult to secure when demand is strong in the United States and the Middle East. Onsite generation can therefore bypass part of a grid-connection delay without being a simple or unlimited substitute for the grid.

Solar and wind can reduce fuel-price exposure once they are operating, while batteries can help manage peaks and provide short-duration supply. Neither automatically delivers firm power around the clock for a large facility. Transmission, interconnection queues, land, permits, weather and storage duration remain practical constraints. A diversified mix—grid supply, renewables, storage, firm generation, demand response and backup fuel—may be more resilient than relying on any single technology.

Three possible paths for costs

Scenario Likely energy-market effects What it could mean for data centers
Short disruption Oil, shipping and insurance costs rise, but domestic gas supply, storage and existing contracts may limit the effect on U.S. power markets. Some pressure on fuel, transport and equipment costs, but limited direct change to electricity costs for facilities with protected contracts. Construction plans may continue.
Months-long disruption Competition for LNG cargoes could tighten U.S. gas markets. Gas-fired electricity may become more expensive in exposed regions, depending on local supply and grid conditions. Higher operating costs for some buyers, more expensive onsite gas power and tougher project-financing or utility discussions. Some projects could be delayed, especially where firm power is already scarce.
Severe, prolonged disruption Extended export constraints, infrastructure damage or shipping problems could compound fuel and power-market stress. Regional shortages are possible even if the national picture looks less acute. Greater curtailment and fuel-delivery risk, with onsite generation harder to fuel and permit. Operators may shift workloads to other regions, and expansion could slow in constrained locations.

These are scenarios, not predictions. A national average can conceal a local crunch: a facility in a congested power market may face high capacity or congestion costs even while overall U.S. prices remain moderate.

Is the conflict likely to stop AI data-center construction?

On its own, a higher energy bill is unlikely to make U.S. operators unable to buy electricity or halt the data-center buildout in the short term. Projects are shaped by multi-year capacity plans, technology demand, long-term contracts and strategic investment decisions; electricity is important, but it is only one part of project economics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The more plausible effect is to make difficult decisions harder. Higher fuel and construction costs can weaken project economics, while turbine and generator constraints can limit onsite-power plans. Utilities and regulators may scrutinize who pays for new grid capacity. Residents who see electricity bills rising may oppose projects that require major upgrades, even when data centers are not the only cause of higher bills. That can bring tougher tariffs, dedicated-generation requirements, permitting delays or moratoria in some places.

For household customers, distinguish between a direct fuel-cost pass-through in utility rates and the long-term cost of expanding generation or transmission for new large loads. Whether data centers contribute to a bill increase—and how much—depends on local regulation, utility investment, rate design and how costs are allocated. The conflict may intensify arguments over affordability without being the sole cause of any particular household’s rate change.

Where exposure is greatest

  • Europe: Greater reliance on imported gas can expose power and industrial prices to competition for LNG cargoes and replacement supplies.
  • Japan and other LNG-importing Asian markets: Buyers may compete for replacement cargoes, particularly because much of the LNG affected by Hormuz disruption was destined for Asia.
  • Gulf and Middle Eastern facilities: Risks can include direct physical damage, local fuel or electricity disruption, threats to cooling and water systems, network interruptions, and higher insurance and security costs.
  • United States: Domestic production provides a buffer, but export-linked gas pricing, regional pipeline limits, transmission congestion, rising data-center demand and local utility disputes can still matter.

What operators, utilities and customers can watch

For a data-center operator, the key question is not just whether power prices rise, but when the price can change under its specific contracts and whether contracted supply remains firm during regional scarcity. A practical review should cover:

  • Fixed, indexed or merchant power exposure; contract reset dates and counterparty risk.
  • Capacity, transmission, congestion and demand charges, plus the allocation of grid-upgrade costs.
  • Fuel-price pass-through, curtailment and force-majeure clauses in power and fuel contracts.
  • Natural-gas storage, Henry Hub and regional basis prices, LNG export utilization, and European and Asian LNG benchmarks.
  • Hormuz traffic, war-risk insurance and Qatar and UAE export status, with attention to the date of each update.
  • Backup-fuel inventories and delivery plans, and whether onsite generation can legally operate for extended periods.
  • Interconnection schedules and lead times for transformers, switchgear, turbines, generators and batteries.
  • Workload flexibility and geographic redundancy: whether computing can shift away from a region under stress.
  • Local utility tariffs, permitting, emissions requirements and community concerns about power, water and noise.

Utilities and regulators can assess whether large-load tariffs reflect incremental generation and transmission costs, whether fuel risks are passed through transparently, and whether demand response or curtailment arrangements are credible. Households can look to their utility’s rate filings and local regulator for evidence of how fuel and infrastructure costs are being allocated rather than assuming that a global oil-price move will appear immediately on a monthly bill.
