Loopie matched people who wanted laundry done with people who had spare capacity in their home washers and dryers. The Seattle startup launched in July 2018, pitching convenience for customers and flexible income for washers. Its original wash-and-fold operation is now historical: in May 2024, Loopie transferred its Seattle operations to Rinse and its Portland customer list to HappyNest. GeekWire’s 2019 profile explains the model; its 2024 report documents the transition.
What Loopie was
Founded in Seattle in 2018, Loopie was a mobile-app and web-based marketplace for laundry pickup and wash-and-fold service. Rather than build a central laundry plant or operate its own laundromats, it coordinated customers, a network of certified washers using household machines, and drivers who moved orders between them. Founder John Vincent Lee described the idea as an “Uber for laundry”; the analogy captures the use of a platform to coordinate distributed labor, but customers were not simply choosing and contracting with a neighbor directly. Loopie managed the marketplace and logistics. GeekWire’s 2019 account describes the original setup.
Loopie called the concept a dual-benefit business. Customers could outsource an unpleasant or time-consuming chore, while people with spare machine capacity could take paid work from home. The company also pursued commercial accounts, including hospitality and service businesses that needed recurring washing of towels, linens, or blankets.

The following describes Loopie’s process as reported in 2019, not a current ordering option or service guarantee:

- Wash and fold: A Loopie-certified washer cleaned, dried, and folded it using household machines.
- Return: A driver brought the finished order back to the customer.
Loopie advertised turnaround within 24 hours in the 2019 profile. That was a historical company promise; it should not be taken as a current turnaround commitment from Loopie or either successor. The available reporting does not establish current Loopie ordering, service-area, or fulfillment terms.
How washers could earn through the marketplace
Washers could use available time on their own machines, fit orders around other obligations, and receive customers through the platform rather than finding each customer themselves. That arrangement avoided a commute to a laundromat job, but it still depended on reliable scheduling, careful handling, and available machine capacity.
Lee told GeekWire in 2019 that Loopie paid washers $15 per bag and that some washers earned $2,000 a month or more. These were founder-reported figures, not independently audited earnings or a guarantee of what a washer could earn. Why the asset-light idea was appealing—and difficult
Loopie’s argument for using household machines was straightforward: recruit washers in a city, add local fulfillment capacity without building a laundry facility, and potentially enter another market with less fixed infrastructure. More nearby washers could also shorten the distance between pickup, processing, and delivery.
But “asset-light” did not mean cost-free or simple. A distributed network needed enough local orders and washers, plus drivers, routing and scheduling technology, recruiting, certification, customer support, and a way to handle missed pickups, refunds, and claims. Household machines and individual practices also make consistency harder to control than work concentrated in one facility. Loopie acknowledged quality and consistency as an early challenge; GeekWire reported that the company switched from yellow bags to branded duffel bags in response. GeekWire’s profile does not define the certification standard or provide independent measures of service quality.
For a customer, the practical questions behind any decentralized laundry service include how it handles delicates, stains, color transfer, overfilled bags, damaged or missing items, and detergent preferences. The historical profile does not establish Loopie’s policy for each of those cases. Loopie’s old website described its own bag-based offer, but it predates the 2024 transfer and should not be treated as current policy. Historical Loopie site.

What Loopie had built by 2019
GeekWire reported that Loopie launched in July 2018 and had about 20 employees by the time of its July 2019 profile. The company had raised more than $300,000 in angel funding by then, according to the founder and company. Its Seattle activity included residential customers, a washer network, and commercial relationships. Loopie also promoted early operating figures in a company social post: more than 1,300 orders fulfilled, $80,000 in revenue, over $250,000 in capital, and a 20-person team. Those figures were company-posted snapshots rather than audited financial statements; they should be read as the company’s own account of early traction, not as independently verified performance.
The pandemic brought a second delivery experiment
During the early COVID-19 period, Loopie continued operating because laundry was treated as an essential service, according to GeekWire’s 2020 follow-up. The pandemic disrupted commercial demand as businesses including gyms, spas, and barbershops closed, even as residential and other business orders continued.

Loopie also launched Shippie, a separate peer-to-peer delivery service built using technology developed for the laundry marketplace. Shippie aimed to move small items across town, not large furniture. It was a pandemic-era expansion of the company’s delivery idea, rather than another laundry product. Loopie eventually expanded to nine U.S. markets. By May 2024, the company said it had facilitated nearly $3.5 million in laundry orders since launch and had raised roughly $4 million in total, including nearly $1 million in 2022. Those are cumulative company figures reported by GeekWire, not a statement that Loopie earned that amount as profit or revenue.
The company told GeekWire that it had difficulty sustaining profitability and could not raise the next funding round it needed to continue its growth trajectory in laundry. That outcome illustrates the gap between geographic expansion and a durable operating model: distributed machines may reduce the need to build facilities, but the marketplace still has to cover the costs of labor coordination, delivery, quality control, and customer acquisition. What happened to Loopie’s laundry customers
In May 2024, Loopie transferred its Seattle laundry operations and other active markets to Rinse. Its Portland customer list transitioned to HappyNest. Loopie retained its intellectual property, software, and branding, so it is more accurate to describe the change as a transfer of laundry operations and customer relationships than as an acquisition of the entire company or a simple shutdown. The company announced the Seattle and Portland transitions on LinkedIn; GeekWire reported the business context and retained assets.
For a Seattle reader looking for a successor, Rinse is the company identified in the reporting as taking over Loopie’s Seattle operations. Its official site is rinse.com. A Portland reader should look to HappyNest, the reported recipient of Loopie’s Portland customer list; its official site is happynest.com. The transfer does not establish that either successor preserves Loopie’s old household-washer marketplace, bag pricing, or turnaround promise, so check the current service terms directly.
What Loopie’s story shows
Loopie made a clear wager: connect underused household machines and flexible labor to customers who would pay to avoid doing laundry, while also serving commercial accounts. It demonstrated that the concept could attract users, expand beyond Seattle, and facilitate substantial cumulative order volume. Yet the 2024 transfer followed reported profitability and fundraising difficulties. The company’s software and brand remained with Loopie, while its customer-facing laundry operations moved to other providers—a useful distinction when tracing the history of an on-demand service.
