On January 22, 2016, Corbis sold its image-licensing business and related assets to Unity Glory International, an affiliate of China’s Visual China Group (VCG). In a separate but connected agreement, Getty Images became the exclusive distributor of Corbis content outside China after a transition. Getty was not the named buyer, and the sale did not include all of Corbis’ businesses.
What the Corbis–Getty deal actually was
The transaction joined two agreements that are easy to conflate: Corbis’ sale of image-licensing assets to Unity Glory International, and an expanded VCG–Getty distribution partnership. VCG was to handle distribution in China; Getty was to distribute the Corbis collection elsewhere after migration. China Daily’s January 28, 2016 account describes the territorial arrangement and the existing Getty–VCG relationship.
That distinction matters. The announced purchaser was VCG’s affiliate, not Getty. Getty gained exclusive distribution access outside China, but that arrangement alone does not establish that Getty owned every image, copyright, contributor contract, or physical archive.

The sale covered Corbis’ commercial image-licensing operation and related assets, not every business associated with the Corbis name. Included were Corbis Images, Corbis Motion, Veer, associated brands and intellectual property, and image and motion archives. VCG’s later filing identified historic collections including Bettmann and Sygma, with archival materials such as photographs, negatives, and prints. VCG’s 2016 annual-report disclosure provides detail on the acquired assets.

Corbis’ entertainment operations were excluded. The announced exclusions included Branded Entertainment Network, Splash, Greenlight, and rights-clearance and representation businesses. Corbis’ broader entertainment operation remained with Gates’ company and was expected to continue under a new name, according to the reproduced Corbis contributor announcement and FAQ.
Why Getty was part of the arrangement
Getty and VCG already had a longstanding commercial relationship: VCG had been Getty’s exclusive distributor in China for more than a decade. The 2016 arrangement extended that relationship in the other direction, with Getty taking the global sales and distribution role for Corbis content outside China. The material was expected to appear in dedicated collections on GettyImages.com alongside Getty’s own and partner content. For Getty, the commercial opportunity was to offer its customers additional contemporary, motion, and archival material through an established global sales organization. For VCG, the acquisition added a recognized international archive and brands while leaving it with the China-facing role. In practice, Getty obtained access to a major rival’s library without being publicly identified as the purchaser.
Getty chairman Jonathan Klein’s widely reported quip that Getty got the valuable parts without “buying the cow” captured the commercial logic, not the legal structure. It is not evidence that Getty purchased Corbis or owned all the underlying works.

What happened to the images and contributors
The transition was not simply a switch that moved every Corbis file to Getty on one date. Corbis’ contributor communication said existing agreements initially transferred to VCG. Selected content could then migrate to Getty; some contributors could be offered direct Getty contracts or assignment letters. Content not selected for migration could remain represented by VCG or, depending on the agreement and VCG’s decisions, have distribution rights returned to contributors. The reproduced contributor FAQ describes those possibilities.
For a contributor, ownership, representation, and distribution were separate questions. A physical archive or image could be part of the acquired assets while copyright and licensing authority remained governed by a particular contributor agreement. Terms, territory, royalties, duration, and termination rights could vary. The available announcement does not establish one outcome for every photographer or file.

How much did the sale cost, and how large were the libraries?
The parties did not disclose the price in the initial announcement. China Daily later reported a figure below $100 million; VCG’s annual-report disclosures put aggregate consideration and related debt or transaction obligations at approximately $80.83 million. These figures describe different reporting contexts, so the later accounting amount should not be treated as a simple publicly announced cash purchase price. Contemporary descriptions of library size also varied with what was counted. One account cited nearly 50 million Corbis photos and 190,000 videos, while other reports used larger totals for the broader archive. The same coverage described Getty’s library at the time as nearly 200 million images. These are historical estimates, not audited totals or current inventory counts. China Daily’s report gives one set of contemporary figures.

Why the deal mattered to the image-licensing business
The sale ended the most visible phase of the long-running Getty–Corbis rivalry and placed Corbis’ licensing operation within a structure combining VCG ownership or management with Getty’s distribution reach outside China. It also illustrates why “Getty bought Corbis” is an attractive but imprecise shorthand: the commercial effect was a larger Getty-distributed collection, while the announced transaction separated the asset purchase from the distribution agreement.
Some commentary and a later lawsuit characterized the arrangement as an indirect or covert Getty acquisition. Those are interpretations and allegations, not the formal transaction description or an established adjudicated finding in the cited material. The Zuma Press complaint should be read as a pleading alleging a position, not as proof of it.
