JPMorgan Chase says Apple Card’s higher-risk borrowers should be manageable because they would be added to a much larger card business that already serves subprime customers. CFO Jeremy Barnum said in February 2026 that about 15% of Chase’s existing card portfolio is subprime, and that Apple Card would not materially change the bank’s overall exposure. That is Chase’s rationale—not proof the portfolio will be profitable or that losses are ruled out.
What Chase is saying about Apple Card risk
At JPMorgan Chase’s February 2026 Company Update, CFO Jeremy Barnum acknowledged that Apple Card has a relatively high share of subprime borrowers. His response was that Chase is “not strangers to subprime”: borrowers in that category already account for about 15% of Chase’s card portfolio, and Apple Card is small relative to Chase’s overall card business. Chase believes its existing data, underwriting experience, servicing operations and collections capabilities will help it integrate the accounts.

The distinction matters. A relatively small acquisition can have only a limited effect on a large bank’s consolidated credit mix while still being a risky portfolio in its own right. Barnum’s remarks were investor-facing management commentary about Chase’s ability to handle the risk, not an independent profitability guarantee. Read the Company Update transcript.

What Chase is acquiring—and when
Apple announced on January 7, 2026, that Chase would become the new issuer of Apple Card. The transaction covers the card portfolio and associated accounts, with more than $20 billion in card balances expected to move to Chase’s platform. Goldman Sachs Bank USA remains the issuer during the transition, and Mastercard is expected to remain the payment network.

The companies have described the transition as taking approximately 24 months after the announcement—roughly January 2028—subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed completion date. Apple’s announcement and Chase’s transaction details provide the current public terms.
Chase recognized an approximately $2.2 billion provision for credit losses in the fourth quarter of 2025 related to its forward purchase commitment. A provision is an accounting recognition of expected credit risk; it is not evidence Chase has already lost that amount, nor a forecast that it will lose exactly $2.2 billion. Chase also projected a roughly 3.4% card net charge-off rate for 2026 in its February investor update, a measure of charged-off balances relative to loans, not an Apple Card-specific forecast.
Why Apple Card was difficult for Goldman Sachs
Credit cards make money through a mix of interest income, interchange and other revenue, but those returns must cover rewards, funding, servicing, fraud, marketing and losses when borrowers fail to repay. A portfolio with more borrowers who have weaker credit histories can produce higher delinquency, charge-offs, collections costs and provisions. The challenge is especially acute when a card’s consumer-friendly design and rewards attract customers across a broad range of credit profiles.

Apple Card has no annual fee, integrates account management into Apple Wallet and advertises up to 3% Daily Cash on eligible purchases. Those features can make the product appealing, but popularity or customer satisfaction does not establish that the issuer earns an adequate risk-adjusted return. Goldman also lacked Chase’s scale and long-established card operations, while its broader retreat from consumer banking made the relationship strategically and operationally burdensome.
Secondary reporting cited by 9to5Mac, attributing comparisons to The Wall Street Journal, put Apple Card’s subprime share at about 34%, versus roughly 15% for Chase and 31% for Capital One. That report also cited approximately 4% Apple Card delinquency against an industry average near 3.05%, and a Goldman net charge-off rate of about 2.93%, described as roughly twice Chase’s and Bank of America’s. These are reported comparisons, not figures newly confirmed by Apple or Chase here; definitions, dates and portfolio composition may differ, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like performance test. See the secondary report and its attribution.
Why Chase may be better positioned
- Scale and diversification: Chase already operates a very large card business. It can add accounts without Apple Card becoming a dominant share of its overall portfolio, spreading fixed operating costs across more customers.
- Risk data and underwriting: A large existing book gives Chase extensive performance history to inform credit models and account decisions. That can help it assess risk, though it does not make future losses predictable with certainty.
- Servicing and collections: Chase already has card servicing systems, staff and processes for customers who fall behind. Those capabilities may lower the operational burden of managing delinquency and recoveries compared with a less established card issuer.
- Strategic fit: Chase has said it wants to grow its share of consumer card outstandings. Apple Card therefore aligns more directly with its core card business than with Goldman’s narrowed consumer-finance strategy.
These are structural advantages, not a guarantee that Chase will outperform Goldman on every Apple Card account or generate a particular return. The test is whether Chase can earn an adequate return after credit losses, rewards, funding, servicing, fraud and transition costs while maintaining the product experience Apple wants.

Why the risk has not gone away
First, averages can conceal a challenging pocket of risk. Apple Card customers may have a different credit mix and behavior from Chase’s average cardholder even if the acquisition barely moves Chase’s overall subprime percentage. The economic performance of the Apple portfolio depends on its own delinquency, charge-offs, recoveries, balances and customer activity.
Second, a no-annual-fee card with attractive cash-back rewards can constrain the issuer’s options. Chase could seek better economics through stricter approvals, credit-line changes, rewards adjustments or other product changes, but Apple’s desired customer experience and the partnership’s terms may limit what can change. None of those changes has been confirmed as a post-transition plan.
Third, the final economics will depend on what happens before and after conversion: account attrition, balance growth, credit-line management, macroeconomic conditions, and the costs of moving data, technology, servicing and customer support. Higher unemployment or pressure on lower-income households could increase losses. Regulatory approvals and successful contractual execution are also necessary for the transition to proceed.

Goldman’s accounting disclosures underline why it is unwise to reduce the exit to one simple “loss” figure. Goldman said the agreement would release $2.48 billion of loan-loss reserves while reducing net revenue by $2.26 billion through portfolio markdowns and contract-termination obligations, plus $38 million in expenses. Those accounting items describe transition economics; they should not simply be added together and presented as a cash loss solely caused by Apple Card. Goldman’s announcement explains the treatment.

Apple says customers can continue using their cards normally during the transition. Mastercard is set to remain the network, and Apple’s announcement describes the existing headline experience, including Daily Cash and Apple Wallet account management. The transition does not by itself mean that current terms change immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsImportant details for after the conversion remain unsettled publicly. Customers should watch for specific disclosures about underwriting and new applications, credit limits, rewards, Apple Card Monthly Installments, Savings integration, servicing and customer support. Apple Card Savings is provided by Goldman Sachs Bank USA under the current arrangement; Apple’s announcement does not establish that it will become a Chase product. Do not assume every current feature or term will continue unchanged after the issuer changes.

For now, the published APR range was 17.49%–27.74% as of January 1, 2026, according to Chase’s transaction announcement. That is a dated disclosure, not a promise of future rates or a statement that every cardholder receives the same APR.
How to judge whether Chase’s thesis works
The useful question is not simply whether Chase knows how to lend to subprime borrowers. It is whether the bank can manage Apple Card’s particular mix of customers and product economics. The evidence to watch is:
Quick Recap
- Credit performance: delinquency, net charge-offs, recoveries and credit-line behavior for the transferred portfolio.
- Revenue and costs: interest and interchange income weighed against Daily Cash, funding, fraud, servicing, technology and collections expenses.
- Customer behavior: whether customers keep using their accounts after the issuer transition and whether balances grow or shrink.
- Product changes: any disclosed shift to approvals, credit limits, rewards, installment financing or account servicing.
- Economic conditions: whether consumer stress or unemployment pushes losses above assumptions.
