At its .NEXT event in Chicago on April 7, 2026, Nutanix announced a broad expansion of the Nutanix Cloud Platform—not one standalone product launch. The updates span AI infrastructure, bare-metal Kubernetes, storage, data security, databases, public-cloud deployments and service-provider tools. Availability varies: several components were generally available at announcement, while others were in early access or planned for the second half of 2026.
The strategic shift is clear: Nutanix wants to operate across virtual machines, containers, AI workloads and hybrid-cloud environments. For buyers, the practical questions are which features are ready, whether they fit existing infrastructure, and what the broader platform will cost to license and operate.
What Nutanix announced
The April announcement brought together several product updates and ecosystem expansions. Nutanix presented them as steps toward a more integrated platform for enterprise infrastructure and AI. That is the company’s strategic positioning, not proof that every workload can be moved between environments without changes or that all capabilities are included in one product or license.
- Nutanix Agentic AI: an infrastructure and software stack for deploying and operating enterprise AI applications and agents.
- NKP Metal: an extension of Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) for Kubernetes clusters running on bare-metal servers.
- Nutanix Unified Storage 5.3: storage updates that extend object-storage tiering and multitenant scaling.
- Nutanix Data Lens 2.0: on-premises data-security and governance capabilities, including operation in air-gapped environments.
- Nutanix Database Service integration with MongoDB Ops Manager: a certified integration intended to coordinate database and infrastructure operations.
- Service-provider and neocloud features: multitenancy and AI-service capabilities for hosting providers.
- Expanded cloud options and cost tools: new or planned Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) deployments and cost-governance features in Nutanix Cloud Manager.

Agentic AI: an infrastructure proposition, not a new model
Nutanix first announced Nutanix Agentic AI on March 16, 2026, describing it as a software stack for enterprise AI factories. It brings together elements of Nutanix AHV virtualization, Flow Virtual Networking, NKP and Nutanix Enterprise AI, and integrates with NVIDIA AI Enterprise at the agent-builder layer. The April announcement framed the offering as spanning compute, storage, networking, Kubernetes, AI application services, governance and hybrid- or multicloud deployment.
That makes Agentic AI primarily an infrastructure and operations proposition. Nutanix is aiming to give organizations a way to run and manage AI applications and agents across their own environments and cloud deployments, rather than offering a new foundation model. It does not remove the need to choose and evaluate models, secure prompts and identities, integrate applications, monitor behavior, or manage AI costs.
The full solution was described as being in early access, with general availability targeted for the second half of 2026. That target should not be read as confirmation that the complete offering is now generally available; the cited announcement alone does not verify whether every planned component has reached GA. NKP Metal brings Kubernetes to physical servers
NKP Metal extends Nutanix Kubernetes Platform to bare-metal servers, allowing Kubernetes workloads to run directly on physical infrastructure rather than inside virtual machines. Nutanix says this can suit AI training, edge computing and other performance-sensitive workloads where direct hardware access, density or GPU capacity matters.

Nutanix describes automation for bare-metal node deployment through Foundation, operating-system and firmware lifecycle management through Lifecycle Manager, and workflows for provisioning, scaling, patching and updating physical infrastructure. The offering also includes Nutanix storage through a container storage interface and Cloud Native AOS data services. The goal is a more consistent management model across virtual machines and containers, including physical Kubernetes nodes.
NKP Metal was offered in early access to customers with NKP Pro or Ultimate licenses, with GA targeted for the second half of 2026. Early access is not the same as a production-ready general release. Bare metal also does not make hardware operations disappear: buyers still need to check server and GPU qualification, firmware and BIOS support, network design, out-of-band management, failure replacement procedures and physical security. The NKP Metal announcement sets out Nutanix’s stated capabilities and timing.
Licensing depends on deployment. Nutanix’s published NKP materials describe physical-core licensing for bare-metal deployments and worker-node vCPU counts for virtualized or public-cloud deployments; control-plane nodes are not licensed under the cited description. NKP has Starter, Pro and Ultimate editions, while full-stack options bundle NKP with other Nutanix products. The software-options page and NKP datasheet differ on the minimum term: one describes terms from six months through five years, while the datasheet describes configurable 12-to-60-month terms. Storage, security and database updates
Unified Storage 5.3
Nutanix Unified Storage 5.3 was described as generally available on April 7. The release expands Smart Tiering to Google Cloud and OVHcloud S3 and adds multitenant object-storage scaling and quotas, with large AI data lakes among the intended use cases. Nutanix also said it planned to add RDMA acceleration for S3-compatible object storage later in 2026. Treat RDMA as a roadmap item unless a subsequent product-specific notice confirms availability.
The update broadens Nutanix’s role in file, block and object-storage workflows, but it does not establish that Unified Storage is a universal replacement for every enterprise storage array. Suitability depends on workload requirements, supported configurations, performance, resilience and the surrounding data-protection architecture.
Data Lens 2.0
Data Lens 2.0 was described as generally available and able to run fully on premises, including in air-gapped environments. Nutanix highlighted ransomware analytics, data auditing and governance, and visibility across distributed storage. This may be relevant where security tooling cannot rely on a SaaS connection because of residency rules, restricted networks or operational-continuity requirements.
Ransomware analytics is not a guarantee of prevention or recovery. Organizations should separately validate immutable backups, recovery-point objectives, restore testing, identity controls and incident-response integration. “Air-gapped” also does not by itself settle questions about administrator access, update paths, support access, encryption keys or the hardware supply chain.

Nutanix said its integration between Nutanix Database Service and MongoDB Ops Manager was certified and generally available, using MongoDB’s third-party backup integration model. The aim is to coordinate provisioning, lifecycle management and backup with infrastructure operations. Certification can reduce integration friction, but it does not remove the need for MongoDB expertise or confirm that every version and recovery design is supported. Validate software versions, backup and restore behavior, licensing and performance for the intended deployment.
Cloud, infrastructure and service-provider ecosystem
The expansion covers several kinds of partner and deployment support. Nutanix referenced broader infrastructure and storage support involving Dell PowerStore and private-cloud automation, NetApp ONTAP, Lenovo ThinkSystem storage and servers, XC One automation, and AMD-based systems and edge platforms. The announcement mixes expanded support with future plans; customers should check the current compatibility and release documentation for the exact product, hardware and version they intend to use.
For NC2, Nutanix said support for AWS GovCloud regions was generally available. AWS European Sovereign Cloud support was a later-2026 target. Planned second-half-2026 capabilities included Google Cloud Hyperdisk and C3 bare-metal instances. Cloud support should not be assumed to mean identical storage, networking, instance choices, performance or billing across providers. Test workload behavior and confirm regional availability before treating portability as established.
Nutanix also announced Service Provider Central (SP Central), a multitenancy capability for service-provider partners offering hosted infrastructure, cloud-native services and AI services with logical tenant isolation. It was in early access, with GA targeted for the second half of 2026. A separate extension of Agentic AI for neocloud providers—a multitenant AI-management portal—was also offered to early-access partners, with GA anticipated in that half of the year. Nutanix positioned its AI ecosystem around NVIDIA AI Enterprise and NVIDIA-certified AI-factory configurations. It also announced a strategic AMD partnership in February 2026. Those relationships broaden the potential hardware and software ecosystem, but buyers still need to validate which configurations are certified, supported and available for their region and workload.

Nutanix Cloud Manager Cost Governance, delivered through its unified console, was described as providing metering, showback and budgeting while keeping cost data within the customer’s infrastructure. These functions can help teams understand and allocate infrastructure costs. They do not demonstrate that Nutanix will always cost less than public cloud or a competing platform. Total cost depends on utilization, licenses, hardware refreshes, staffing, support, data egress, migration and workload placement.

Who should evaluate the expanded platform?
Nutanix may be worth evaluating when an organization needs to manage virtual machines, Kubernetes, storage and cloud deployments under a more consistent operating model; is modernizing a VMware estate; needs AI infrastructure across on-premises, cloud, edge or sovereign environments; or requires security and governance tooling for disconnected sites. Bare-metal Kubernetes may be relevant when there is a concrete performance or hardware-access requirement and the organization wants lifecycle automation rather than assembling every tool itself.

It is also a weak match if the buyer’s overriding requirement is the lowest possible infrastructure cost, if required hardware falls outside Nutanix’s support boundaries, or if the team cannot staff enterprise virtualization, Kubernetes, storage and AI operations.
Alternatives such as Red Hat OpenShift, VMware Cloud Foundation, Canonical Kubernetes and managed services such as Amazon EKS, Azure Kubernetes Service or Google Kubernetes Engine may suit different operating models. Compare them using the same criteria: deployment locations, VM and bare-metal support, Kubernetes fleet management, AI tooling, storage integration, sovereignty, licensing, support and migration effort. They are comparison candidates, not assumed feature-for-feature equivalents.
Questions to settle before a purchase
- Which required capabilities are GA in your geography, edition and support tier?
- Is your specific server, storage, network and GPU configuration qualified?
- Should the workload run on AHV, vSphere, bare metal or a public-cloud service?
- Which products and licenses are required—NCI, NKP, Nutanix Agentic AI or cloud-management products—and what is bundled?
- How are physical cores, worker-node vCPUs, GPUs and control-plane nodes counted for your deployment?
- What happens operationally if an early-access feature changes before GA?
- Which versions are certified, and who owns support when an integration fails?
- What are the full costs of hardware, licensing, support, cloud use, egress, data protection and migration?
- Can the environment continue operating and be recovered if a management console or connected service is unavailable?
- Where may AI data, models, logs and telemetry travel, and who controls access and encryption keys?
Nutanix’s public material describes editions and licensing mechanics but does not establish one universal current price. Buyers should expect a quote shaped by capacity, deployment model, term, support and included products rather than assume a standard price.
