There is no single universal one-click checkout feature in WordPress. Depending on your business, “one-click” may mean skipping the cart, displaying an express payment button, or letting a recognized returning customer pay with saved details.
For one service, deposit, donation, or simple offer, WPForms is usually the simplest choice. Use Easy Digital Downloads for downloads, FunnelKit for advanced WooCommerce funnels, Direct Checkout for WooCommerce to bypass the cart, and WP Simple Pay for standalone Stripe payment pages.
What “one-click checkout” means
WordPress checkout shortcuts generally fall into three categories:

- Express checkout: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe Link, or PayPal Fastlane can prefill payment and shipping information. The customer will usually still confirm the payment.
- True one-click purchase: A recognized returning customer uses stored payment and shipping details and places an order with minimal interaction.
Most WordPress plugins provide the first two experiences. They do not automatically create an Amazon-style purchase button for every visitor. New customers may still need to enter an email address, choose shipping, complete fraud checks, or pass authentication.

Payment information should be tokenized and handled by your payment processor or wallet—not stored as raw card numbers in WordPress. For example, Stripe lists standard U.S. domestic card pricing at 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful transaction, subject to applicable exceptions and current terms (Stripe pricing).

Before you start
Whichever method you choose, prepare these basics:
- A self-hosted WordPress website using HTTPS.
- A payment processor account, where required.
- Correct product, price, currency, tax, shipping, refund, and confirmation settings.
- Reliable email delivery for receipts, order notifications, and fulfillment messages.
- Test-mode transactions before accepting live payments.
Do not remove fields simply to reduce clicks. Physical orders may still require an address, tax information, phone number, or shipping choice. Digital products may need an email address for delivery or license access.
1. Create a payment form with WPForms
Best for: one product, a service, deposit, donation, event payment, or simple order form.

Setup steps
- Install and activate WPForms.
- Open WPForms → Settings → Payments.
- Connect your payment processor and select test or live mode.
- Create a payment form.
- Add the product, price, quantity, customer, and billing fields.
- Enable the relevant payment integration and express methods.
- Configure a confirmation message or redirect.
- Embed the form on a sales, service, donation, or product page.
- Complete a test transaction before going live.
This produces a fast payment experience, but it is not necessarily a literal one-click purchase. Customers may need to confirm a wallet payment, authenticate, or complete fields that are not saved.
WPForms is a poor fit for a large catalog, complex shipping, inventory management, or multi-item carts. Its pricing page showed introductory plans from $49.50 per year on August 18, 2026; introductory prices renew at the regular price. WPForms also states that inactive or free-license payment use can incur a 3% platform fee, separate from processor fees (WPForms pricing).
2. Use WP Simple Pay for a standalone Stripe payment page
Best for: services, deposits, donations, subscriptions, and businesses that want Stripe payments without building a store.
WP Simple Pay creates standalone Stripe payment forms. It is explicitly not intended to replace a full cart for WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads (WP Simple Pay documentation and pricing).
Setup steps
- Install WP Simple Pay.
- Connect your Stripe account through the setup wizard.
- Confirm that Stripe is in the correct test or live mode.
- Create a payment form from a template.
- Set the amount, currency, one-time or recurring billing, and customer fields.
- Enable available methods such as Stripe Link, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
- Add the form to a WordPress page using its block or embed method.
- Test on desktop and mobile.
WP Simple Pay Lite is available through WordPress.org but adds a 3% fee per transaction in addition to Stripe’s fees. Its Pro version removes that additional plugin fee (WP Simple Pay on WordPress.org).
Choose another solution if you need inventory, product variations, shipping calculations, coupons across multiple products, or a traditional shopping cart.
3. Use Easy Digital Downloads for digital products
Best for: eBooks, PDFs, software, templates, audio, courses, memberships, and other downloadable products.
Easy Digital Downloads manages digital commerce, delivery, purchase records, and access rules. Instead of treating a download like a generic payment form, you can configure a product with a Buy Now button that bypasses the add-to-cart step.
Setup steps
- Install and activate Easy Digital Downloads.
- Create the downloadable product.
- Open EDD’s payment settings and connect Stripe or another supported gateway.
- Configure receipts, download delivery, refunds, and access rules.
- Edit the download product.
- Set its purchase button to Buy Now instead of Add to Cart.
- Test payment confirmation and download delivery.
Buy Now means the shopper skips the cart. It does not guarantee that a new customer can complete the transaction with one click; an email address, payment details, authentication, or billing information may still be required.
EDD is generally a better fit than WooCommerce for a business whose main products are digital. It is less suitable for physical goods with complex shipping or a store already built around WooCommerce (Easy Digital Downloads).
4. Optimize WooCommerce with FunnelKit
Best for: established WooCommerce stores that need optimized checkout pages, order bumps, upsells, side carts, and express payment options.

FunnelKit is not merely a cart-skipping plugin. It is designed to optimize the wider buying journey. That makes it powerful for a serious store, but unnecessary for a single service or donation.
Setup steps
- Install and activate FunnelKit Funnel Builder.
- Make sure WooCommerce products, stock, shipping, tax, and checkout settings already work.
- Connect Stripe or your selected gateway.
- Configure the gateway webhook.
- Enable supported express methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Stripe Link.
- Open FunnelKit’s cart settings.
- Enable express checkout on the cart or checkout page.
- Configure checkout fields, order bumps, upsells, and confirmation behavior.
- Test different products, payment methods, devices, and customer states.
Gateway compatibility matters. WooCommerce’s current PayPal Fastlane documentation says Fastlane works with the default WooCommerce checkout page, while support for third-party checkout widgets and funnels—including FunnelKit—is still in development (WooCommerce PayPal Fastlane documentation). Do not assume that every express payment button works inside every checkout builder.
FunnelKit is a poor fit when you do not need funnels, upsells, or WooCommerce. It also adds more interconnected components to maintain than a simple payment form.
5. Skip the cart with Direct Checkout for WooCommerce
Best for: an existing WooCommerce store that mainly wants a Buy Now or direct-to-checkout flow.

Setup steps
- Install Direct Checkout for WooCommerce from WordPress.org.
- Open the plugin’s WooCommerce settings.
- Enable direct checkout or express checkout.
- Choose where the button appears.
- Customize its text and styling.
- Choose whether to skip the cart globally or only for selected products.
- Test simple, variable, grouped, virtual, and downloadable products as relevant.
- Test both guest and logged-in customers.
The free version primarily creates a direct-to-checkout flow. The plugin listing identifies more advanced quick-purchase features, including a quick-purchase button, as premium functionality. Do not describe the free version as a universal saved-customer one-click ordering system.
Test carefully with the current WooCommerce Checkout block, themes, subscriptions, product add-ons, and payment gateways. The plugin’s changelog includes WooCommerce compatibility fixes and an earlier incompatibility declaration involving WooCommerce Blocks.
Which method should you choose?
- Selling one service, deposit, or donation? Choose WPForms.
- Need a Stripe payment page without a cart? Choose WP Simple Pay.
- Selling downloads or software? Choose Easy Digital Downloads.
- Running a serious WooCommerce store with funnels and upsells? Choose FunnelKit.
- Simply want to bypass the cart? Start with Direct Checkout for WooCommerce.
There is no universal winner. Product type, shipping, inventory, recurring billing, customer accounts, and gateway compatibility matter more than a plugin’s popularity.

Important limitations and failure points
Express buttons are conditional
Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe Link, and PayPal Fastlane may not appear for every visitor. Availability can depend on the device, browser, country, customer enrollment, merchant eligibility, domain verification, HTTPS, test-mode settings, and checkout compatibility.
Variable products require special testing
A direct button must preserve the selected variation, quantity, add-ons, personalization, stock status, tax, and shipping information. A button that loses the selected variation can create an incorrect order.
Subscriptions are not the same as one-time payments
Recurring payments require gateway support for mandates and saved payment methods, along with failed-renewal handling, cancellation, refunds, customer self-service, and possible authentication. A setup that works for a one-time purchase may not work for subscriptions.
Do not aggressively cache checkout pages
Page caching can break cart contents, customer sessions, nonces, tax calculations, shipping rates, payment tokens, and order creation. Follow your host and caching plugin’s current guidance to exclude cart, checkout, account, and payment-return pages from caching.
Testing checklist
Before launch, test more than a successful card payment:
- Guest and logged-in checkout
- Mobile Safari, mobile Chrome, and a desktop browser
- Successful, declined, and 3-D Secure payments
- Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe Link, or Fastlane where applicable
- Refunds and cancellation behavior
- Coupons and quantity changes
- Variable products and add-ons
- Out-of-stock products
- Shipping-address and tax changes
- Order, receipt, fulfillment, and download emails
- Interrupted payments and browser back-button behavior
- Repeated clicks and duplicate-order prevention
If an express button does not appear, first check HTTPS, processor eligibility, domain verification, country and device support, test/live mode, gateway connection, and compatibility with your checkout builder. If a customer is redirected to normal checkout, that may be the correct fallback rather than an error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a WordPress one-click checkout really one click?
Usually not for every customer. Direct checkout skips the cart, while express checkout may prefill saved information but still require confirmation, authentication, shipping selection, or fraud checks. A true one-click purchase generally requires a recognized customer with usable saved details.
Can I create one-click checkout without WooCommerce?
Yes. WPForms and WP Simple Pay create standalone payment forms, and Easy Digital Downloads provides a digital-product checkout without WooCommerce. WooCommerce is mainly needed for a full physical-product store.

No. WPForms supports Stripe, PayPal, Square, and Authorize.Net. WP Simple Pay is Stripe-specific, while WooCommerce checkout-flow plugins are not themselves dependent on Stripe. Your available payment methods depend on the gateway you connect.
Will Apple Pay and Google Pay appear for everyone?
No. Wallet buttons depend on the customer’s device, browser, country, enrollment, merchant eligibility, HTTPS, domain verification, and the checkout integration. Customers should have a normal checkout fallback.
Does one-click checkout work for guest customers?
Guests usually receive a shortened checkout rather than a true one-click purchase. Some wallets can recognize a customer through the wallet account, but shipping, email, tax, fraud, and authentication requirements may still apply.
Can I use one-click checkout for subscriptions?
Sometimes, but subscriptions require specific gateway support for recurring payment mandates, saved methods, renewals, cancellations, refunds, and authentication. Test recurring billing separately from one-time payments.
What is the best option for digital products?
Easy Digital Downloads is generally the most appropriate of these five because it manages downloads, receipts, access, and purchase records. Its Buy Now button skips the cart but does not guarantee a literal one-click transaction.
Does skipping the cart hurt multi-product orders?
It can. Customers who commonly compare products, apply coupons, change quantities, add gift options, or combine items may benefit from a shortened one-page checkout instead of a Buy Now button.
