Cindy Rose is the Group Chief Executive Officer of WPP, not the CEO of Microsoft. She joined Microsoft in 2016 as CEO of Microsoft UK, later became President of Microsoft Western Europe and Chief Operating Officer for Microsoft Global Enterprise, and left Microsoft to lead WPP on September 1, 2025.
Her career spans law, media, telecommunications, consumer operations and enterprise technology. That broader progression is more accurate than the outdated “Microsoft CEO” framing used in a Tech Times profile published November 22, 2021.
Who is Cindy Rose?
Cindy Rose OBE is a British-American business executive and the Group CEO of WPP, the global marketing, communications and creative-services company. WPP appointed her CEO effective September 1, 2025, succeeding Mark Read.

Before joining WPP, Rose held several senior positions at Microsoft. She was CEO of Microsoft UK, President of Microsoft Western Europe and, from March 2023, Chief Operating Officer for Microsoft Global Enterprise. WPP says that role involved working with large organizations using digital technology and artificial intelligence to transform their businesses.

Rose’s current position matters because older online profiles may still describe her as a Microsoft executive. That was historically correct, but it is no longer current.
WPP’s appointment announcement and its current leadership biography identify her as WPP’s Group Chief Executive Officer.
Education and early background
According to WPP, Rose studied at Columbia University and New York Law School. Corporate biographies describe her as holding both British and American nationality.
Her career did not follow a conventional engineering or computer-science route. Her legal training was one part of a broader background that included government relations, commercial management, media, telecommunications and technology. The available biographies do not establish that her law degree alone determined her later promotions, so it is better understood as part of a multifaceted executive foundation.
Fifteen years at Disney
Rose spent 15 years at The Walt Disney Company, moving through roles with increasingly broad commercial and regional responsibilities.

- Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director for the UK, Ireland, Southern Europe and the Middle East.
- Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Disney Interactive Media Group, EMEA.
This progression took her from legal and regulatory work into regional management and interactive media. It also gave her experience across international markets and digital entertainment rather than limiting her career to a single specialist function. These positions are documented in Microsoft’s 2016 appointment announcement and WPP’s board biography.
Virgin Media: digital entertainment and TiVo
Before Microsoft, Rose became Executive Director of Digital Entertainment at Virgin Media. WPP’s corporate materials say she was involved in the launch of Virgin Media’s next-generation pay-TV platform powered by TiVo.

It also expanded her operating experience beyond Disney’s media ecosystem. The TiVo-linked contribution should be read as a claim from WPP’s biography, not as an independently measured assessment of her individual impact.
Vodafone: consumer operations and retail
Rose later became Managing Director of Vodafone UK’s Consumer division. WPP and Henley Business School biographies say she led an expansion of Vodafone’s retail estate from roughly 350 stores to more than 500 and helped return the business to growth after 12 consecutive quarters of revenue decline.
Those figures show the scale of the consumer and retail operation she managed, but they do not prove that Rose alone caused the turnaround. The claims come from corporate and institutional biographies and should be treated as attributed descriptions of her tenure rather than independently audited measures of causation.
The Vodafone role was an important transition: Rose moved from entertainment and digital media into a large telecommunications business with customers, retail locations and consumer revenue at its center.
Joining Microsoft UK
Microsoft announced in June 2016 that Rose would join Microsoft UK on July 1 and formally become its CEO on November 1, 2016, succeeding Michel Van der Bel.
The role covered Microsoft’s products, services and support offerings across the United Kingdom. Crucially, this was CEO of Microsoft UK, a country-level leadership position—not CEO of Microsoft Corporation.
That distinction is important when interpreting headlines that call her “Microsoft’s CEO.” Rose entered Microsoft after senior commercial roles at Disney, Virgin Media and Vodafone; she did not rise through Microsoft’s technical ranks.

On September 9, 2020, Microsoft announced that Rose would become President of Microsoft Western Europe effective October 1. She succeeded Vahé Torossian, while Clare Barclay became CEO of Microsoft UK. The Western Europe remit covered 14 countries.

This was a substantial increase in geographic scope: Rose moved from leading one national organization to overseeing a multi-country regional operation. It was also the position she held when the original Tech Times feature appeared in November 2021.
Descriptions of specific pandemic-era initiatives or inclusion programs require more detailed sourcing than the original profile provides. The firmly documented point is the size and seniority of Rose’s regional remit.

In March 2023, Rose became Chief Operating Officer for Microsoft Global Enterprise, according to WPP’s appointment announcement.

It connected her earlier experience in consumer-facing media and telecommunications with Microsoft’s enterprise technology business.
The available sources do not establish the size of her team, reporting line, financial targets or individual performance metrics. Those details should not be inferred from her title alone.
Why Rose became WPP CEO
WPP announced on July 10, 2025, that Rose would become CEO effective September 1, 2025. She succeeded Mark Read.
The appointment represents the latest step in a career that repeatedly crossed industry boundaries. WPP operates in advertising, marketing, communications and creative services—areas increasingly dependent on data, digital platforms, AI and business transformation. Rose’s enterprise-technology experience at Microsoft therefore provides a clear connection to her new role, although her current title is a marketing and communications group CEO rather than a technology-company CEO.
