Yes—but only as a sizing aid, not a guarantee. Xesto Fit is an iPhone and iPad app that uses a compatible TrueDepth camera to scan someone’s feet, create a 3D foot profile and recommend sizes for supported brands. The profile can then be shared with a friend or family member buying the shoes, which makes it potentially useful for surprise gifts.
However, the app’s current listing, reported scanning problems and limited user feedback mean shoppers should still check the exact shoe’s size guide and the retailer’s return policy before spending money.

What is Xesto Fit?
Xesto Fit is a free iOS foot-scanning and shoe-sizing app. It is not a shoe retailer, virtual try-on service or delivery platform. Its role is to measure the wearer’s feet and use those measurements with available brand sizing information.
Recommended Free Tools
That addresses two common problems:
- Buying for yourself: your usual size may vary between brands or shoe models.
- Buying a gift: you may not know the recipient’s current size and may not want to ask directly and spoil the surprise.
The gifting feature is the more distinctive use case. The recipient scans their feet, saves the profile and gives the intended buyer permission to view it. The buyer can then use the measurements and recommendations when selecting a pair online.

How the foot scan works
Xesto uses the device’s front-facing TrueDepth camera—the same type of depth-sensing hardware associated with Face ID—rather than relying only on a conventional flat photograph. The app combines ordinary camera imagery with depth information to create a three-dimensional representation of each foot.
Xesto says hundreds of thousands of data points are processed for each foot. The stated output includes:
- A 3D model of the foot
- Foot measurements
- Size recommendations for supported brands or products
The current App Store description says the scan involves five photos of each foot, although the number of capture steps can change between versions. Follow the instructions shown in the app rather than assuming a fixed process.

How to use Xesto for a surprise shoe gift
- Check the device first. Confirm that the iPhone or iPad has TrueDepth hardware and meets the current App Store requirements.
- Have the recipient scan their feet. Open Xesto Fit, find a clear space and follow the on-screen positioning instructions.
- Review the result. Check the 3D model, measurements and any available brand recommendations.
- Save the profile. The recipient should retain the scan before sharing it.
- Share access with the buyer. The buyer can then review the profile and recommendations remotely.
- Verify the actual shoe. Compare the recommendation with the brand’s current size chart, width options and model-specific information.
- Protect the budget. Buy from a retailer with a clear gift return or exchange policy, and keep the receipt or gift receipt.
The recipient has to cooperate at some point. Xesto cannot determine someone’s foot dimensions from their name, an old shoe size or an ordinary photograph. You might be able to borrow a compatible device, but the person still needs to participate in the scan.
Device requirements and current availability
The U.S. App Store listing says Xesto Fit requires iOS 16 or later and a compatible iPhone or iPad with a TrueDepth front-facing camera. The listing specifically describes compatibility with devices including the iPhone X, XR, XS, XS Max, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, as well as compatible iPad Pro models. Hardware and operating-system compatibility can change, so check the live App Store listing before planning a gift.
Xesto is not presented as an Android app. Someone without a compatible Apple device may be able to borrow one, scan their feet and share the resulting profile, according to Xesto’s product page.
The U.S. listing showed the app as free and identified version 2.58 as the latest listed release, dated January 16, 2024, in the research captured for this article. That does not prove the service is abandoned, but it does mean shoppers should test the scan and recommendations before relying on it for a time-sensitive gift.
What the size recommendation really means
A Xesto result is not a universal shoe size. It is a recommendation based on the wearer’s dimensions and the sizing information available for a brand or product.
That distinction matters because fit depends on more than foot length. A recommendation may not fully account for:
- Forefoot and heel width
- Instep height and overall foot volume
- Toe-box shape
- Left-right differences
- The shoe’s last and construction
- Material stiffness and flexibility
- Socks, insoles or orthotics
- The wearer’s preference for extra room or a snug performance fit
The same person may need different sizes—or different width options—in different models. A precise scan cannot correct an incomplete brand chart or guarantee that a particular shoe will feel comfortable.

There are three separate questions:
1. Is the scan measurement accurate?
Xesto claims accuracy within 1.5 millimeters. That should be treated as an attributed product claim, not independent proof that every scan achieves that result.
2. Is the size recommendation accurate?
Recommendation quality depends on how well the foot measurements match the brand’s sizing data. Xesto describes its recommendations as comparisons between the user’s dimensions and brand sizing guides. If the guide is generic, incomplete or poorly matched to a specific model, the output may still be wrong.
3. Will the shoes feel right?
That is the least certain question. User reviews in the U.S. App Store include reports of recommendations that appeared close to known sizes, but other users report difficulty completing scans, unavailable brand recommendations and substantial differences from their usual sizes. The listing captured for this article showed a 1.5 out of 5 rating from 11 U.S. ratings. That is a very small, user-generated sample—not a controlled accuracy study—but it is relevant evidence of possible real-world friction.

Scanning may require assistance
Some users report difficulty positioning the phone, responding to repeated prompts or scanning themselves. Having another person operate the device can make the process easier and may produce a more consistent capture.
A completed scan may not produce a useful recommendation
App Store reviews include a report of scans completing while selected brand recommendations remained unavailable or showed updating messages. This is user-reported evidence, not confirmation of a systemwide defect, but it is a reason to test the app before a purchase deadline.
Brand coverage can change
The App Store description says the app covers more than 150 brands, while Xesto’s website refers to hundreds. Published counts differ and may change. More importantly, broad brand coverage does not mean that every current model has a usable recommendation.
Children, swelling and changing feet complicate the result
A stored profile may become less useful when someone’s feet are changing rapidly, such as during childhood, pregnancy, swelling or recovery from an injury. It is also a poor substitute for professional advice where a medical condition or custom orthotic is involved.
Privacy considerations
Foot scans are more sensitive than an ordinary size note. Xesto’s privacy policy says the service processes foot photographs, TrueDepth data, 3D renderings, measurements, profile information and derived matching data. It says consumer information may be shared with participating customers when the user gives specific permission.
The policy visible during research has an effective date of July 31, 2020. The App Store privacy disclosure lists contact information, identifiers and photos or videos as data that may be collected and not linked to the user; Apple notes that these disclosures are provided by the developer and are not verified by Apple.
Before scanning, review the current Xesto privacy policy and the live App Store privacy labels. If the recipient is uncomfortable sharing foot images or profile data, a brand size chart or in-store fitting may be preferable.
Who should use Xesto?
| Situation | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Recipient can scan and share a profile | Good use case, especially for online gifts |
| Buyer wants help comparing brands | Worth trying, but verify the exact model |
| Android-only household | Poor fit unless a compatible Apple device can be borrowed |
| Unusually wide feet, orthotics or medical concerns | Prefer professional or in-store fitting |
| Time-sensitive gift | Test the app and recommendations before ordering |
| Recipient will not participate | The main gifting benefit is unavailable |
Alternatives
Use the brand’s own size guide
This is free and often the most direct option when you already know the recipient’s measurements or an established size in that brand. It remains dependent on the quality of the guide and may not address unusual foot shape.
Measure or shop in person
In-store measurement is usually better for children, orthotics, recurring fit problems and important purchases. It is less convenient and generally cannot preserve a surprise gift.
Consider other scanning systems cautiously
TechCrunch has named Neatsy as another foot-scanning company. ZOZOMAT is a separate system using a dedicated mat and app. These services are not interchangeable with Xesto, and their current availability, pricing and regional support should be checked independently.
Bottom line for shoe shoppers
Xesto’s concept is genuinely useful: the recipient can create a foot profile once and share it so a buyer does not have to ask for a size immediately before giving the present. That can reduce one source of uncertainty and make online shoe gifting more practical.
But the app should be treated as a helpful sizing input—not insurance against an unsuitable purchase. Check the specific shoe’s size and width information, choose a retailer with generous gift returns, and avoid relying on Xesto alone when the wearer has unusual fit needs or the purchase is expensive and difficult to exchange.
