No—TikTok was not officially unblocked in India. On August 22–23, 2025, some Indian users could reportedly load parts of TikTok’s website without a VPN. TikTok said it had not restored access, while government sources said no order had lifted the ban. The incident was therefore a temporary website-access issue, not an official TikTok relaunch.
What happened
Some users in India reported that TikTok’s website had become reachable without a VPN on August 22, 2025. Reports mainly concerned parts of the homepage or “About” page—not confirmed access to TikTok’s complete mobile service.
The reports quickly led to claims on social media and in news coverage that India had lifted its five-year TikTok ban. That interpretation was not supported by the available evidence.

TechCrunch reported that TikTok denied restoring access. A company spokesperson told the publication: “We have not restored access to TikTok in India and continue to comply with the Government of India’s directive.”

Indian government sources also said that no unblocking order had been issued. Hindustan Times reported that a senior Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology source rejected claims that the ban had been lifted.
Website access was not the same as a TikTok comeback
A website loading in a browser does not necessarily mean that the underlying service has been authorised or fully restored. The reports did not establish that Indian users could reliably:
- Download TikTok from Google Play or Apple’s App Store in India;
- Sign in or create an account;
- Watch videos through TikTok’s full content-delivery system;
- Upload, comment, message, search or monetise content; or
- Use the service consistently across Indian internet providers and regions.
The mobile app was still reported as unavailable through India’s major app stores. The Indian Express and Gadgets 360 described the website access as limited and separate from official app availability.

What may have caused the temporary access?
The likely explanation reported by TechCrunch was a possible network-level misconfiguration. In practical terms, a routing, DNS or filtering error could have allowed some requests to reach TikTok temporarily even though the broader restriction remained in place.
That explanation should be treated as likely rather than proven. The reporting did not include a public postmortem from an internet service provider confirming the exact fault. TechCrunch also compared the episode with a September 2022 incident in which some providers reportedly made restricted websites temporarily accessible while applying a patch.
Different results across networks would be consistent with a technical issue: one provider might load a page while another still blocks it, or a cached static page might appear even though video playback and account services remain unavailable.

Why TikTok remains a special case in India
India blocked TikTok in June 2020 along with dozens of other Chinese-linked apps. The action was reported under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, with the government citing concerns relating to sovereignty, integrity, defence, security of the state and public order.

TikTok’s earlier India statement said the company hoped to make the platform available to Indian users in the future while cooperating with the government, but that statement was not an announcement of a restored service.
Why a return seemed plausible
Speculation was partly fuelled by the reappearance of some previously restricted Chinese-linked services under changed arrangements. The Indian Express noted examples including SHEIN India Fast Fashion, revised listings for Xender and TanTan, and the India-focused return of BGMI after regulatory discussions.

Those cases do not show that TikTok had received equivalent approval. Reporting also said ByteDance had explored ways to re-enter India and had spoken with authorities over the years, but no reported agreement had restored TikTok.

- A direct company confirmation: TikTok or ByteDance would need to announce that service had been restored in India.
- Indian app-store availability: The official app should appear for download through Google Play and Apple’s App Store in India.
- Full functionality: Users should be able to log in, watch videos, upload, search, comment and use messaging—not merely open a static webpage.
- Consistent access: The service should work across multiple Indian networks and regions, rather than for a small group of users temporarily.
- Updated operating information: A real relaunch would likely include applicable terms, privacy information, safety disclosures or India-specific operating details.
A VPN, proxy, third-party APK, cached search result or social-media screenshot cannot establish official availability. Sideloaded apps and unofficial access tools can also create malware, privacy and account-security risks.

What this means for the August 2025 reports
The strongest supported conclusion is that parts of TikTok’s website briefly became reachable for some Indian users on August 22–23, 2025. TikTok denied restoring access, government sources said no unblocking order had been issued, and the app remained unavailable through India’s major app stores in the reported coverage.
This article reflects the verified 2025 episode. It should not be read as a fresh nationwide test of TikTok’s status on August 18, 2026; a current-status claim would require new verification.
