Petco took part of its Vetco Clinics website offline in December 2025 after customer and veterinary records were reportedly accessible online without normal login controls. The reported exposure may have included customer names and addresses, pet names, visit summaries, medical histories, prescription information and vaccination records.
This was reported separately from Petco’s disclosure of a broader customer-data security lapse involving potentially sensitive identity and financial information. The available evidence confirms online exposure, but does not establish that an attacker downloaded or misused every record—or even that the Vetco exposure and the separate Petco incident had the same cause.
What happened to the Vetco website?
On December 10, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Petco had taken affected Vetco website functionality offline after customer and pet-care information was exposed on the internet.
The precise description matters: Petco took down part of the Vetco Clinics website or disabled affected functionality. This does not mean that every Vetco clinic closed, that all veterinary appointments stopped, or that Petco’s main retail website went offline.

Reporting indicates that a flaw or incorrect application setting allowed records to be accessed without normal authentication. Secondary coverage described the pattern as an insecure direct object reference, or IDOR, in which an application fails to confirm that a person requesting a file is authorized to view it. That technical description should be treated as reporting about the exposure—not as a fully confirmed technical finding from Petco.
Petco reportedly corrected the relevant issue, removed files from online access and added security controls. Those steps reduce the known exposure, but they do not prove that no one viewed or copied records while they were accessible.
Do not use “hack” or “cyberattack” as a definitive description. The available reporting establishes that records were accessible online; it does not establish an intentional intrusion or mass theft.

The Vetco exposure and the separate Petco customer-data incident may involve different systems, records and affected customers. A person could be affected by one, both or neither. The available information does not establish that they shared infrastructure or a common cause.
What information may have been exposed?
Information reported in connection with Vetco
Coverage of the Vetco exposure reported that accessible records could include:
- Customer names and address or location information
- Pet names
- Veterinary visit summaries
- Pet medical histories
- Prescription information
- Vaccination records
- Other customer and pet-care records
Petco’s privacy policy effective July 5, 2025 says its services may collect information such as pet names, breed, age, microchip details, veterinary records and related pet-health information when customers provide it. That policy describes categories Petco may collect; it is not proof that every category was exposed through Vetco.

The December 5 report concerned a different security lapse and described information that could include:

- Names and dates of birth
- Social Security numbers
- Driver’s-license information
- Bank-account information
- Credit- or debit-card information
- Other financial information
Do not assume that Social Security numbers, driver’s-license information or payment details were part of the Vetco exposure specifically. The company had not publicly provided a complete inventory of exposed information in the reporting available for that disclosure.
What remains unknown?
There is no publicly established Vetco-specific total. The available reporting does not establish:
- The exact number of exposed Vetco records or affected customers
- How long the records were accessible
- Whether search engines indexed the records
- Whether anyone downloaded, copied or misused them
- Whether Social Security numbers, driver’s-license numbers or payment details were present in Vetco records
- Whether server logs can identify unauthorized access
- Whether the Vetco exposure and the separate Petco incident were related
Petco’s separate state notifications indicate that at least 500 California residents were covered by one filing, because California requires notification for certain incidents affecting at least that many state residents. Reporting also identified notifications involving Massachusetts residents and three Montana residents. Those figures do not establish the national number affected and do not represent the Vetco-specific total.
What Petco has said
In connection with the separate customer-data security lapse, Petco said that a setting within one of its software applications inadvertently allowed certain files to be accessible online. The company said it corrected the setting, removed the files from online access and implemented additional security measures and technical controls.

Petco also said it would provide more information to people whose information was involved and offered free credit and identity-theft monitoring to affected individuals in that earlier incident. However, Petco did not publicly answer questions about the number of affected customers, the exact categories of information involved or whether it could determine if data had been downloaded.

A customer should rely on a direct Petco or Vetco notice for the exact scope of that person’s exposure. The Petco privacy and security page provides the company’s general privacy and incident-response information, but it does not substitute for an individualized notice.

- Look for a direct notice. Check email and postal mail for a communication from Petco or Vetco. Do not use contact details supplied in an unsolicited message; verify them through Petco’s official website or an existing statement.
- Ask Petco what was involved. If you used Vetco, ask whether your account or pet record was included, which data categories were involved, when the exposure occurred and whether monitoring or reimbursement is available.
- Change reused passwords. Replace any Petco or Vetco password used elsewhere, especially for email, banking, shopping and other accounts. Use a unique password for every important account.
- Turn on multifactor authentication. Start with email, financial, shopping and identity-related accounts. Protecting email is particularly important because it is often used to reset other passwords.
- Monitor financial accounts. Review bank and card statements for unfamiliar transactions, new payees, address changes and account-recovery alerts. Contact the institution immediately if anything looks wrong.
- Consider a credit freeze if identity numbers may be involved. A freeze can restrict new-credit inquiries, but it must generally be placed separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You may need to temporarily lift it for a legitimate application.
- Watch for pet-themed phishing. Treat unexpected vaccine reminders, prescription notices, refunds, appointment changes and requests to “verify” payment or identity information as suspicious. Accurate details about your pet or clinic visit do not prove that a message is legitimate.
- Preserve evidence. Keep notices, suspicious emails, transaction records and screenshots. If fraud occurs, contact the relevant bank or card issuer and use IdentityTheft.gov for official recovery guidance.
A paid identity-monitoring service is optional, not a requirement. Begin with the free steps above and check whether Petco or your financial institution already provides monitoring. Monitoring can alert you to some activity; a credit freeze is a separate preventive measure.
Why pet medical records still matter
Pet medical records are not the same as human medical records under federal health-privacy law. It would be inaccurate to assume that HIPAA automatically governs Vetco’s records simply because they concern medical treatment.
That does not make the information harmless. Veterinary records may reveal an owner’s name and address, where and when the owner sought services, a pet’s illnesses or treatments, prescription details and household routines. Those details can support convincing social-engineering attempts even when no government identification number or payment card is involved.
Questions regulators and customers may still have
Important unresolved issues include whether all required state notifications were made, whether regulators or attorneys general investigate, whether Petco’s notices clearly distinguish the Vetco exposure from the separate customer-data incident, whether monitoring is offered to each affected group and whether Petco can identify access through server logs.
There may also be questions about third-party software or service providers, private lawsuits or other legal claims. None of those possibilities establishes that Petco violated a particular law or is legally liable. A breach notification or website takedown alone is not a final legal finding.
