Microsoft’s business-development chief, Christopher D. “Chris” Young, resigned on January 22, 2025. He immediately stopped serving as the company’s executive vice president of Business Development, Strategy, and Ventures, but remained a Microsoft employee through the end of March 2025 to support the transition. The announcement was not a new August 2026 event.
Microsoft’s filing did not disclose a specific reason for the resignation, and it did not identify a successor in the immediate announcement.
What Microsoft confirmed
Young informed Microsoft of his decision to resign on January 22, 2025, according to the company’s Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. His executive duties ended immediately.

He did not leave Microsoft entirely that day
The resignation from Young’s executive position was effective immediately, but his employment with Microsoft was expected to continue through the end of March 2025. During that period, he was expected to assist with the leadership transition and take on additional responsibilities.
That distinction matters: the filing confirms an immediate departure from the executive post, not an immediate end to all employment with Microsoft. The announcement itself does not establish his later employment status.
Why did Chris Young resign?
Microsoft did not provide a detailed explanation. The filing says Young decided to resign and would support a smooth transition. Contemporaneous reporting and comments attributed to Young referred to entrepreneurial interests and a new opportunity, but no specific employer, company, or next position was identified.
There is no confirmed evidence that he was fired, that he left because of a dispute with Microsoft, or that the departure was caused by Microsoft’s financial performance, artificial-intelligence strategy, compensation, or diversity policies. Those explanations should not be presented as established facts.
Young’s background and Microsoft responsibilities
Young joined Microsoft in 2020 after serving as chief executive of cybersecurity company McAfee. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at companies including Cisco and RSA.
At the time of his resignation, Young was part of Microsoft’s senior leadership structure and reported to CEO Satya Nadella, according to contemporaneous CNBC reporting.

His organization was associated with:
- Strategic business development and alliances
- Corporate strategy
- Major technology and commercial partnerships
- Support for acquisitions and strategic investments
- Microsoft’s M12 corporate venture-capital operation
That portfolio connected Microsoft with both established companies and startups. It does not mean Young personally made every investment or negotiated every transaction.

Deals and partnerships associated with his tenure
Coverage of the resignation linked Young to several high-profile Microsoft initiatives. These included Microsoft’s approximately $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which closed in October 2023; Microsoft’s strategic relationship with OpenAI; and Microsoft’s advertising partnership with Netflix.
Young was involved in or helped oversee business-development and strategic work around these initiatives. The available evidence does not support assigning him sole responsibility for any of them.

His portfolio also included M12, Microsoft’s corporate venture-capital arm. CNBC reported that M12 had invested in startups including Innovaccer, Outreach, PsiQuantum, Skedulo, and Typeface. M12’s role illustrates why Young’s departure mattered beyond traditional mergers and acquisitions: his remit extended into startup investing, emerging technologies, and long-term strategic relationships.
What happens next at Microsoft?
The immediate announcement did not name a successor. It also did not indicate that Microsoft was abandoning acquisitions, reducing its venture activity, or changing its overall artificial-intelligence strategy.

Compensation context
CNBC reported that Young received approximately $12 million in total compensation for Microsoft’s fiscal 2024, based on Microsoft filings. That is a historical compensation figure—not a reported resignation payment, severance amount, or current salary. The available sources do not establish his severance terms.
Bottom line for readers
Chris Young’s resignation was a significant Microsoft leadership change, particularly because his role covered strategy, partnerships, acquisitions, and corporate ventures. The confirmed facts are narrower than some headlines may suggest: he resigned on January 22, 2025, left the executive role immediately, stayed through the end of March for transition work, and did not have a publicly disclosed reason for leaving in the company’s filing.
Readers should treat claims that he was forced out, left over a specific policy disagreement, or triggered a change in Microsoft’s acquisition strategy as speculation unless supported by separate evidence.
