Yes—the underlying news was real, but the headline was narrower and stronger than Micron’s exact wording. On March 20, 2024, Micron said its HBM supply was sold out for calendar 2024 and that the overwhelming majority of its 2025 supply had already been allocated. The company was discussing HBM3E as its leading product, but it did not say that every HBM3E chip it would produce was sold.

Later in 2024 and 2025, Micron strengthened the claim, repeatedly describing its HBM output for calendar 2025 as sold out. By 2026, the company had moved into high-volume HBM4 shipments, making the original statement a historical account of an AI-memory capacity crunch—not a current statement about HBM3E availability.

What Micron actually announced

Micron made the original disclosure during its fiscal second-quarter 2024 earnings call on March 20, 2024. Its calendar-year statements were:

  • HBM supply for calendar 2024 was sold out.
  • The overwhelming majority of 2025 HBM supply had already been allocated.
  • Pricing had already been determined for the relevant 2025 allocation.

That distinction matters. “Sold out,” “allocated,” “contracted,” and “pricing determined” describe related but different stages of a commercial supply relationship. Micron’s March wording did not establish that 100% of its 2025 output had been sold, nor did it quantify the units or identify every customer.

Was it specifically HBM3E?

HBM3E was the product context for the announcement. Micron was ramping its HBM3E portfolio, had sampled a 36GB 12-high version, and said the product would enter high-volume production with an increasing mix during 2025. Its 24GB 8-high HBM3E was intended for NVIDIA’s H200 Tensor Core GPUs, according to Micron’s product announcement.

However, the company’s supply statement referred primarily to “our HBM”, not to a separately quantified pool consisting exclusively of HBM3E. The most accurate formulation is:

Micron said its HBM supply was sold out for 2024 and that most of its 2025 supply had been allocated as it ramped HBM3E products.

It would be too broad to say Micron confirmed that every HBM3E unit it would make in 2024 and 2025 had been sold.

Why HBM became a bottleneck

High-bandwidth memory is stacked DRAM designed to sit close to processors such as AI accelerators. It provides much greater memory bandwidth than conventional memory, which is important for moving the large volumes of data required by generative-AI training and inference.

Demand rose sharply as cloud providers and technology companies built AI infrastructure around high-end accelerators. Each newer accelerator generation can also require more memory capacity and bandwidth. Micron said NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture would increase HBM3E content per GPU by 33% compared with the prior generation, according to reported company commentary.

Supply cannot expand as quickly as ordinary memory output because HBM requires:

  • Advanced DRAM manufacturing.
  • Through-silicon vias and stacked memory dies.
  • Specialized assembly, packaging and testing.
  • Customer qualification for tightly integrated accelerator packages.

Converting capacity toward HBM also carries an opportunity cost: the same advanced DRAM and packaging resources cannot be used as flexibly for other memory products. Yield problems or delays in qualification can therefore affect the timing and amount of shippable output even after a customer allocation has been announced.

Micron’s HBM3E products and named platforms

Product Capacity Platform disclosure Timing
HBM3E 8-high 24GB NVIDIA H200; later designed into GB200 2024–2025
HBM3E 12-high 36GB Later designed into NVIDIA GB300 Sampled in 2024; ramped in 2025
HBM4 12-high 36GB NVIDIA Vera Rubin Volume shipments began in Q1 2026

Micron said its HBM3E 12-high product delivered more than 1.2TB/s of performance and offered 50% more capacity than its 8-high configuration. It also claimed approximately 30% lower power consumption than competing HBM solutions. Those are Micron’s comparisons, not independent benchmark results. Lower memory power can help system efficiency, but total accelerator-system consumption also depends on the GPU, networking, cooling and workload.

How the wording changed over time

The sequence of Micron’s disclosures is more informative than the original headline alone:

  • February 26, 2024: Micron announced mass production of HBM3E.
  • March 20, 2024: 2024 HBM supply was sold out; the overwhelming majority of 2025 supply was allocated.
  • June 26, 2024: Micron said HBM was sold out for both 2024 and 2025, with pricing contracted for the overwhelming majority of 2025 supply. (Prepared remarks)
  • September 25, 2024: Micron reiterated that HBM was sold out for both years and said pricing had been determined. (Prepared remarks)
  • December 18, 2024: Micron again described 2025 HBM as sold out and expected HBM4 to ramp in 2026. (Prepared remarks)
  • March 20, 2025: Micron said its HBM output for calendar 2025 was sold out and disclosed HBM3E designs for NVIDIA’s GB200 and GB300. (Prepared remarks)
  • September 23, 2025: Micron said almost all customers had pricing agreements covering a vast majority of its HBM3E supply for calendar 2026 and expected to sell out the remaining total HBM supply for that year. (Prepared remarks)
  • 2026: Micron reported volume shipments of 36GB 12-high HBM4 for NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform and later said HBM4 was in high-volume shipments for its lead customer’s platform. (HBM4 release; June 24, 2026 update)

What “sold out” meant for Micron

In this context, “sold out” referred to planned production output being committed through customer arrangements, forecasts, purchase commitments or negotiated supply agreements. It did not necessarily mean that every unit had already been physically produced or shipped.

Nor did it mean:

  • Retail buyers could purchase HBM3E modules and found no inventory. HBM is normally integrated into accelerator packages rather than sold as a consumer upgrade.
  • Every accelerator manufacturer was completely unable to obtain HBM.
  • One customer, including NVIDIA, bought all of Micron’s HBM.
  • Micron disclosed its total unit volume, customer-by-customer allocations or contract values.
  • Every allocation was irrevocable under every possible commercial circumstance.

“Designed into” a platform also does not mean that every unit used Micron memory or that Micron was the sole supplier. Micron later said its HBM customer base had expanded to six customers and that it had shipped to a third large HBM3E customer by March 2025.

What it meant for investors and industry buyers

For Micron, contracted HBM demand provided unusually strong visibility into future production and supported a richer product mix than conventional DRAM alone. For investors, the important signal was not simply that a product was popular; it was that customers were committing capacity and, later, pricing in advance.

That visibility came with risks. Micron still had to execute on yields, advanced packaging, customer qualification and delivery schedules. Demand was also tied to continued AI-infrastructure spending. A change in accelerator designs, customer plans or the pace of data-center investment could affect future requirements. Competition from other HBM suppliers, including SK hynix and Samsung, also remained relevant.

For AI-accelerator manufacturers, cloud providers, server builders and OEMs, the announcement meant that HBM procurement had become a strategic constraint. Securing memory early could improve production visibility, but it could also limit flexibility if a platform changed or a newer HBM generation arrived. HBM3E capacity commitments could coexist with development and qualification of HBM4; one generation did not instantly replace the other across all systems.

Verdict

The core claim was substantially correct: Micron’s HBM capacity was committed for 2024, and the company ultimately described 2025 HBM output as sold out. But the original phrase “entire HBM3E supply” was an imprecise shorthand. Micron’s March 2024 disclosure was about HBM broadly, with HBM3E as the key product context, and it initially said most—not all—of 2025 supply had been allocated.

As of 2026, that headline should be treated as historical. Micron’s HBM business had progressed from HBM3E capacity commitments to HBM4 volume shipments for next-generation AI systems.
